  1. @BriGuy82, was Flight of the Intruder hard or just tedious? Good job either way!
  2. I only played it once, for an NA contest 2 or 3 years ago. Did you read a walkthrough? It's possible you're trying to do something early on that you're not ready for, or they're deserting because you're just wandering around the ocean like a nudnik.
  3. Between the time I spent before and after Orb-3D, it was 4 1/2 hours, but a better player could definitely finish it in under 2 hours
  4. I guess I can look at F-15 Strike Eagle next, but it will probably have to wait until the weekend
  5. Ferrari Grand Prix Challenge is done. With Bearcat-Doug's Gauntlet win that @scaryice missed, that takes us up to 640. I used TMR's strategy of getting to around 60 points and then tanking the rest of the qualifiers and it just barely worked out.
  6. Orb-3D is done. It's a pretty clever game, actually, but I don't feel a strong need to ever play it again. The last two rounds were really tough, and then maybe the most anti-climactic final boss fight in the NES library? Ok, I'll get back to Ferrari Grand Prix
  7. Made it to level 29 of Orb-3D. It's a really irritating maze that isn't being cooperative. I hope i can finish it up with a few more hours tomorrow
  8. @BriGuy82 damn that was quick! Have you played it before? I haven't figured out how to control the Orb in Orb-3D yet. I'm aimlessly bouncing around in the 3rd stage until I run out of fuel. I think there are unlimited continues (?) but it's slow going regardless.
  9. All right @bronzeshield, you sucked me in. I'll give Orb-3D a try. I am making progress on Ferrari Grand Prix but can shelve it for a bit.
  10. Made it to stage 3 of Dirty Harry. I'm trying to figure out the whole grappling hook / cliff part.
  11. Just to be clear (since I now see that I wasn't), I was really wondering whether starting at level 2 with 4 lives via password is a fool's errand, and whether I should go all the way back to the start and play more carefully to start level 2 with 8+ lives (which I think I can do). I just watched TMR's playthrough, and he just kept retrying with passwords, but he's much better at games than I am
  12. I made it to stage 2 of Dirty Harry with only 2 lives left. I hope I will be fine just continuing with the password and 4 lives instead of trying to go through the first level again more efficiently to build up a reserve.
  13. Since you can retire at any time and "end" the game, someone would have to come up with a set of reasonable alternative criteria like saving your family, becoming a duke, and marrying the best wife, and maybe retiring with 90+ pirate points instead of 95+. I think that's one reason for the current winning condition since it's simple but pretty challenging.
  14. The difficulty level affects your share of plunder in the accounting at retirement. So, indirectly, yes. This is one where you really have to read the walkthrough at least once.
  15. All I'll say about Pirates! is that it's a real pain in the ass to get the contest-required winning condition of King's Advisor. It's on my list of "never play again for VGS contests." You'll really have to study the manual in detail or you will make mistakes like not marrying the "best" wife that will ruin any chance of getting to KA.
  16. Congrats Gaia! I remember using the fireball to good effect when I beat it a few years ago. I think I leveled up more than was necessary, though. What are you thinking about next? The only dork game left is Pirates!
  17. I'm going to try Dirty Harry next for a change of pace.
  18. Ultima: Warriors of Destiny is done. Apparently this is a really shitty port of a good game on the Apple II and other computers. This version is terrible, especially for a 1993 (!) game, and was the last of the NES Ultima games released. Apparently FCI tried to directly use the computer-based game engine, and it was too large and complex for a console, so this disaster is what resulted. Anyway, it's done.
  19. Might and Magic is done. It was... ok. I don't think anyone has claimed Ultima Warriors of Destiny, so I can start on that in a few days.
  20. Hey @Reed Rothchild - just a heads up, you have what should be #312 misnumbered.
  21. Grinding on Might & Magic. Decent chance I'll finish it this weekend.
  22. Still working on Might & Magic. I'm saving up gold to level up and buy better armor. I'm nowhere near finished but it's not intolerable now that I'm not resetting a lot from dying in random encounters.
  23. @guitarzombie The score reflects the difficulty and also willingness to play. Scary alluded to this when I brought up Flight of the Intruder. If we start dictating scores directly by central planning, the score system won't reflect true the desire of the competitors. Some people will artificially distort games like Mutant Virus, but it should correct itself over a few years' time.
