  1. R-Type is similar to Sinistron, a shooter with a shield mechanic that requires you to master each level inch by inch. I found Sinistron harder though because the later parts of the game often felt broken/unfair, while R Type is punishing but feels a bit more manageable. The last level of R Type has some slowdown that happens inconsistently and can mess you up so that felt a bit broken, but generally R Type feels mostly fair imo.
  2. Nice to see the hardest proper action game on the system is done. If you beat the American version you deserve a medal. Probably the only game harder is the puzzle game Timeball, though the simulation game Gunboat is also worth mentioning for demanding extreme patience.
  3. I beat Bug, Guardian Heroes, and Gunbird since my last post.
  4. Wow did this really die after 1 month? lol I beat Panzer Dragoon and Daytona earlier this year if that counts.
  5. Battletoads, Ghosts n Goblins, Super Ghouls n Ghosts, Super R Type, this dumb shmup called Sinistron, Japanese Mario 2 with no warps, a really tedious tank sim, Cliffhanger on Sega CD, in Sonic 06 I got all S Rank on all of Shadows levels, Art of Fighting arcade, KOF 2002 arcade. Sinistron was probably the most frustrating, not surprisingly its a Japanese game that was localized with the normal mode harder than the original hard mode.
  6. Sunset Riders is a game I never came across in the 90s, and didnt even run into on the internet until a few years ago. Its so popular on Twitch I had to eventually give it a shot. I really love it as its basically Cowboy Contra, made by Konami and all. The thing is though, the default setting feels like playing Contra on hard mode, and that coupled with it being Western themed makes it really stand out as its own thing to me. I was wondering what were peoples experience/reaction to the game back then? Was it popular? The talk of the school yard? Did you beat it? Did everyone give up at the same part? Did your friends older brother know all the tricks? Did you dress up as Steve or Cormano for Halloween?
  7. Plastic has tons of negative health consequences, though as far as I know it cant be absorbed dermally.
  8. Did you allow yourself cheats or glitch exploitations?
  9. To clarify its not the challenge, as a whole these games are pretty average in difficulty. Its the challenge of level 1 being greater than later stages. It just feels weird to me.
  10. Willow and the Neutopia games. Im still sad they didnt make Neutopia 3.
  11. For me the biggest one is Taz Escape from Mars. Its one of very few games I have vivid memories of from when I was only 5 years old, since my family didnt have our own console until I was almost 8. The problem is its hard AF, not that fun, controls are kinda annoying, and has basically no appeal that draws you in. I watched a guy beat it on Twitch and he was really good at games and it still took him about 2 weeks of regular streaming to finish it. Then there are a few arcade games I can quarter feed through but would like to actually master them one day. Pulstar and Blazing Star are probably the biggest ones. My record on Pulstar is 56 credit clear, my record on Blazing Star is 3 credit clear.
  12. But then how will I get Battletoads for the Wii?
  13. I never played the MSX original, but I did play Parodius Da on the PCE back in the day and loved it. I recently played the SNES ones. The SNES version of Parodius Da was a lot less fun than the PCE one, and they made the leg dodging boss a lot harder. Gokujou Parodius has the best presentation and is super fun. Jikkyou Parodius is also really good and has a ton of playable characters. One problem I have with Gokujou and Jikkyou though is that the first level is really hard on both, and its compounded by starting with no power ups. I finished Jikkyou and in my opinion level 1 is the hardest level in the game. I havent played Sexy Parodius yet but I will one day. Out of the ones I played I think Gokujou Parodius is the best. The series is about a potent mix of fun and insanity and this one delivers that the best.
  14. Objectively it would probably be a super buggy game that crashes a lot. Otherwise its just an infamy contest where games that got hyped but didnt meet the hype like ET will rise to the top.
  15. ^Yeah I think you basically nailed it with the lack of characterization aspect. DQ 1-4 were all really innovative for their times so in their historical context I do consider them great games even if a modern gamer would find them archaic. DQ5 had such a great story and did have some characters you actually got invested in. DQ6 just doesnt have any of those redeeming factors and as you put it feels behind the times.
  16. I'd be more interesting in knowing the objectively best game to hardcore gamers, completely removing the criteria of mass appeal and commercial success.
  17. Hey everyone. Im a big fan of the Dragon Quest games. I really liked 1 and 2, 3 was super addicting, 4 was really good, and 5 is one of the best games I've ever played. So naturally I was pretty excited to play DQ6. However after putting 10 hours or so into it, it hasnt really lived up to my expectations. For an RPG released in the mid 90s it seems really basic. It would have no doubt been amazing in 1992, but this was the time when it was competing with the likes of FF6 and Phastasy Star 4. Compared to those games, DQ6 seems good but nothing special. Theres nothing wrong with that, but for the next installment in the biggest RPG series I feel like they underperformed on it. I've never seen a ranking where anyone considers it a better game than DQ5, which is pretty telling imo. Did anyone have the same experience as me, or on the contrary do you think it was an amazing game in the same league or better than DQ5, FF6, etc. ? Edit 2 months after posting this: I've been playing this game pretty regularly for two months and while the multi-world gimmick has grown on me and I appreciate it more, another issue I'm having is with roadblocks in the game where I get stuck for extended periods of time. I don't want to complain about parts where this is solved by grinding, because DQ2 I remember being pretty grindy at times and I gave it a pass. But on top of that there is a fair amount of crypticness and it doesnt really have the personality to pull you back into it when this happens. Im currently at the part where I'm looking for the four legendary armaments and I've got all but the armor. I know its probably in the castle in the southwest island, and that I probably need the flying carpet to get to it, but as for finding the carpet the only hint it gives me is that a rich fashionable has it. I thought they might mean the fashion guy on the small southern island but it seems like its not him. I've spent at least 6 hours just trying to solve this one armament and I'm probably going to stop playing the game at this point.
  18. Atari was discussing a Jaguar 2 in some interviews so maybe in the alt history we would have the Microsoft Jaguar 2. Also worth mentioning in this thread that Capcom, Konami, EA, Hudsonsoft and Activision all published games for the 3DO. There was at least potential they could have thrown their weight behind it.
  19. Another thing to consider is 3DO was 650 dollars when it was losing to the SNES, but a few years later they got their manufacturing figured out and were selling them for 200. I wonder how many have SNES fans this could have lured over through the late 90s, though I agree with you probably PC gaming would be the biggest winner.
  20. Turbografx would start out on top but I think 3DO would take over once their prices dropped. Other contenders would be the Atari Jaguar, Neo Geo AES, Neo Geo CD, Amiga CD32, Apple Pippin, PC-FX, CDi, FM Towns Marty.
  21. The -s plural is what everyone Ive ever met has intuitively used - Nintendos. Even the examples above of words where apparently this isnt used, it seems entirely regular. "Samurais are cooler than otakus." The only reason I can think to avoid this is for purely print purposes as maybe one wouldnt recognize to pronounce the s as a plural with the z sound. In that case you could use the cool street spelling "Nintendoz", bro. The Latin endings only occur in English when academic people insist on using the original Latin grammar despite speaking English. The plural = same as singular doesnt really make sense because Im pretty sure people just do that on words that are funny to pronounce like fish instead of fishes. Another alternative could be to use the irregular plural suffix -en as in oxen, children, brethren. So "Nintenden" or "Nintendoen."
  22. Its not as fun as a face paced sonic game but thats what happens when you experiment with a different approach, you often get mixed results. Chaotix does some things well and is kinda lame is some regards, but overall its a solid and fun game as long as youre not expecting it to be a Sonic game. I give it a B+
  23. Ive come to the conclusion that it probably makes more sense to master each level so I can get to the late level with a ton of lives rather than just grind at the late levels constantly continuing at 10 and rarely 11. In an ironic twist a compile game turns out to be a bit of a memory shooter. I can get to level 8 with 1 continue so Ill work on extending that.
