Beat Super Mario 2 challenge

I've never beaten this game either. When I was a kid I always played it for like thirty minutes and got bored or frustrated or just ran out of videogame time. I never really felt compelled to play through to the end. I did always enjoy the quirky world and weird characters though.

I beat this game just the other day.

I always alternate between characters every stage, using every character once before I repeat. It keeps things interesting and adds a certain challenge back in the game.

The random number generator thing sounds fun, I might try it this way next time I play.

I also like the idea of going for all the mushrooms, I think I know where most if not all of them are. Iirc 6-2 only has one mushroom.

Luigi and the princess were the two everyone used as kids, at least in my area. As we grew up, we realised Luigi is a real pain to control, and since I prefer playing through stages than going around them, his high jump is worthless to me.

I beat this game for the first time last year finally. I tend to use Luigi and Toad almost exclusively. There is a couple specific levels I remember using Princess for but I know for sure I didn’t use Mario

I finally made it to 4-3! I lost a ton of lives on the birdo fight at the end of 4-2 so I didn't make it much further... I just realized there's a warp on the whale section so  I can skip that fight!

If you are warping your way through and you are doing it correctly, you should only have to warp twice.

well there are two warp paths:

One will bypass (the boss fight on) 4-2, 4-3, 5-1, 5-2, 5-3

The other wil bypass (almost all of) 5-3, 6-1, 6-2, 6-3

seems like the second path is shorter

Up to 7-1 !!! I'm down to my last life... Triclyde and Birdo at the end of 6-3 burned through them. It took me a bit to figure out the block stacking strategy for Triclyde.

7-2 is fun.  It has multiple routes and a lot to explore.

Once you finally beat it, you should give Super Mario Advance a try.  It's only slightly different, but it also adds some hidden coins and Yoshi eggs to provide a little more replay value.

Yes 4-2 was my sticking point for years, but since I started this challenge, I can now clear it every time. Just made it to Wart today with no continues. I had really bad luck this time with bonus chances so I didn't have as many lives as I wished.

As someone else mentioned earlier, you can really boost your lives during the bonus stages due to cherries. I had just shy of 30 lives on world 3 iirc, but then ended up getting sloppy.

The key though isn't to button mash, rather wait about a second before stopping the first reel. It'll give you a cherry, and then whatever the other two reels display doesn't matter, you'll get at least a 1-up.

If you get into the timing of it, you can basically get cherries every time. A slight pause as the reel starts spinning, then stop the first one. As the next chance loads, wait a slight pause before stopping it, etc. The timing will be exactly the same for each chance, though if you wait until the reel properly gets going, it's much harder to get the cherries.
