This is probably the first generalization of the Cars fanbase that I've seen. Are you referring to people who can't discuss Moving in Stereo without making some lewd remark about Phoebe Cates in Fast Times at Ridgemont High? I loved the song way before I was aware of its use in that movie.

Just another schmaltzy retro band with overwrought synth and monotone mumbly vocals.  This is one of the greatest of all time?  I don’t see it.  Sorry

"Schmaltzy" means overly sentimental which is a weird description of the Cars music.

Not liking their music doesn't make them the "soundtrack for douchebags" either.

They are doing a throwback to early rock and rockabilly but sped up and punked it up.  Cept they filed all the edge off to make something safe and fitting for mtv/radio.  Others did it too and better, just nothing that interesting here.

It’s like ordering a steak from Outback.  Look ok, but you can’t eat it, just cut off a bit chew it and spit it back on your plate.  Sure you can drown it in steak sauce and force it down, but it hardly seems worth $30.

Maybe they were a throwback to the Beatles. My Best Friend's Girl even appropriates the riff from the Beatles' I Will and puts it to much better use.

I don't mind "safe" and "radio friendly" when the songs are good, and the songs are good.
