  1. Yeah I couldn't even manage Starcraft last year, just completely drained me after awhile. Part of the reason I started taking my time with Ogre Battle since I didn't want that to happen again. (Also I'm lazy but that's neither here nor there) If I could've used an actual mouse with Starcraft it would've been much more manageable for me I think. Ogre Battle is a lot more tolerable without a proper mouse.
  2. That poster looks awesome! Almost looks like a theatrical film poster, shitty tagline and all, haha. I must admit, as someone who was born in 2001, I am somewhat jealous of those of you who were there to see the release of this game, it sounds like it was a really fun time in gaming history.
  3. I was thinking of trying out Bomberman prior to you originally claiming it actually, I can do it after ECW if nobody else wants it. (If someone DOES want it let me know, trying to prioritize the games nobody else wants now that DOOM is done.) Also, personally once we accomplish this for 2023, I'll consider it job well done once and for all and not participate in the thread next year, I don't want to beat every N64 game in a year, just to then go back and do it all over again, haha. I'm thinking next year I'll help out with one of the other beat every game threads. Maybe NES since they always seem to have trouble with the final couple dozen games over there for whatever reason, I'd probably prioritize the games they didn't beat this year.
  4. Absolutely fantastic game for sure, easily in the same league as the first 2 DOOM games. Very very glad I finally had an excuse to play this one, had an absolute blast with it. Very nice palette cleanser after Ogre Battle, haha. I played the 2020 release of the game rather than the original rom since I had easy access to it on Steam, it was a pre-order bonus for DOOM Eternal. It's completely identical to the original other than modern quality of life features like less pixelated graphics, support for much higher resolutions and framerates, widescreen support, FOV slider, etc. Plus an additional bonus campaign connecting the story of 64 to Eternal, which I'll definitely play through prior to moving on to ECW.
  5. Actually, that gives me an idea, at some point you should interview Splain and have Splain interview you. Those would be a fun couple of ones to read, haha.
  6. Huh. Oh well, I'll still give it a shot, 7 hours isn't too bad either way.
  7. Thanks. I think after DOOM 64 is done I'll go ahead and try out ECW since that one's very short and see how I do with one of the wrestling games, if I find I don't want to gouge my eyes out afterwards I'll go ahead and take care of the other two unclaimed wrestling games just to get them out of the way. I'll also say if Brunswick Bowling isn't done by around mid-December I'll go ahead and pick that one up too just to be 100% sure since like I said @Nugfish hasn't been on in awhile. @ZeldaFan042 You still working on Body Harvest & Carmageddon?
  8. We've totally got this by the way, over a month to complete what, 12 more games after DOOM 64 is done? And all of the absurdly long games are done? Pff. Easy.
  9. I was actually thinking of trying this one out after DOOM 64 since it looked like it might actually be kinda fun, haha. Speaking of, decent bit in to DOOM 64 now and am loving it so far. Amazing how much quicker I can get through a game when I actually look forward to playing it rather than it feeling like a burden, haha. And yeah, I think most of the games left by this point are in the shorter 5-10ish hour range, so you could probably pick up another. I'm dreading the possibility that I might have to be the one to finish off the rest of those wrestling games but, gotta do what you gotta do.
  10. Honestly I like being able to see the under-drawings, personally. I like being able to see the work that went in to making the final result.
  11. I honestly was not expecting to get this many, haha. Couldn't be happier though! ...Also not sure if I'm gonna be able to fit all these in the second frame in addition to the ones already in there, may indeed need to hang up a third frame, haha. Also, one little thing @T-Pac... It's uh, it's Conor, one N. Did you think I misspelled my own name when I gave you my address? You aren't the first person to make that mistake nor will you be the last, but figured I'd point that out just for future reference, hahaha. Excited to see who ended up with the Pumpkin Ghost, that was definitely one of my favorites this year!
  12. Well in the bit you quoted I'm talking about Ogre Battle 64. DOOM 64 I'm gonna play anyway since I could probably beat it in just one or two sessions, and I've been meaning to play it for years now which is part of the reason I claimed it a long while back.
  13. I REALLY underestimated how much that game was gonna kick my ass, since 1: It's long as shit, 2: I don't really care for that genre all that much, and 3: I have very little experience within that genre in the first place, so it took me a pretty long time to get a grip on things. I've never been very good at these types of games. I thought it might take me a month or two at most to get through it, and here we are in late November, haha. I guess that's what happens when you try to force yourself to play a really long game you don't really like and are not very good at, lesson learned.
  14. Meant to get it done earlier, but these last several weeks I've been feeling extremely fatigued and I'm not sure why, which made it a bit difficult for me to work up the motivation to play a lot of the time, many days where I just didn't play it at all because I really didn't feel like it, haha. But it's done now. Give me a couple days and I'll breeze through DOOM 64 real quick, as planned that'll be my reward for putting myself through that slog, haha. After that I'll check out which games haven't been claimed and start working on another. @Nugfish hasn't been on since early October, so decent chance he might not show up again before the end of the year. If that ends up being the case I could probably pick up Brunswick Circuit Pro Bowling, I haven't played it but from the gameplay I've seen of it, it looks fairly straightforward. Frankly I think any game is gonna feel like a breeze after Ogre Battle, haha. I have no desire to play any other game like that ever again, I think I got my fill of that genre and I'd be content never playing another game like that for the rest of my life.
  15. Oh boy, Mine'll be a doozie if I ever get picked for one of these
  16. (This live version is also absolutely incredible)
  17. No, because then there'd be no payoff. Like I was saying earlier, the jumpscare is the end result of a lot of tension-building. If you didn't have it, not only would it just be tension with no release, the tension would also eventually stop working on the player entirely because there isn't the looming threat of a jumpscare if the player messes up. In a vacuum the atmosphere of the games is great on its own, but it's only enhanced by the threat of a jumpscare, without that threat the tension would very quickly deflate since there isn't an actual threat of anything happening, it would just be empty tension. Tension only works if the player actually feels like they're in danger. Other than that, "Unnverve the player via gameplay, putting them in tight and dangerous situations, limiting their resources etc." is exactly what FNaF does, that's what the whole series does, the jumpscares are just the punishment for when the player messes up, which like I said helps to actually enhance the stress the player feels whilst playing. That's the best possible thing you can do with jumpscares, when they're not just cheap shock value, but actually serve a purpose to enhance the whole experience. In my opinion, FNaF would actually be a worse game without the jumpscares for these reasons. Like I said earlier the weakest link in the series for me is the gameplay, I have no complaints whatsoever about how the series approaches its horror honestly, it's really expertly done, especially for a developer who, prior to this game, had no experience whatsoever in the horror genre as far as I'm aware.
  18. ...According to who? I haven't noticed this, personally. Also, in FNaF's defense, the reason the jumpscares work is because it's incredibly good at setting a tone and a sense of dread prior TO the jumpscare. The thing that makes the series scary is the anticipation of the jumpscares, not the jumpscares themselves, since the games are all good at getting the player to dread them thanks to the tone they set, that's the series' greatest strength. The jumpscares wouldn't work if it didn't properly instill a sense of dread in the player prior. That's why I've always disagreed with the popular narrative of FNaF being all jumpscares, it really isn't, the jumpscares are just the crescendo after a lot of tone-setting, but without that tone-setting the jumpscares would fall flat. Really my biggest gripe with the series is actually that the gameplay is very basic, which leads to almost all of the games in the series being very very short. The actual horror itself is done very well, both in terms of creepy scary and jumpy scary like I said earlier in the thread, if that sort of horror was accompanied by more involved gameplay I'd like the series a lot more. That's why I was looking forward to Security Breach, until it turned out they botched both the horror, so it wasn't scary in the slightest, and the gameplay, so it wasn't fun in the slightest, haha.
  19. Also, that is an absolutely amazing collection there @joe19! Multiple things there I've never even seen before, would definitely love to get some more details about some of that stuff. I've had, and still have a couple rare OoT-related things. At one point I did own a gold Not For Resale copy of Ocarina of Time, and I still do own two gray not for resales, one of which has a somewhat strangely shaped back sticker on it, which I've never seen on any other NFR, I got it from jonebone back in the day, and he I believe got it alongside a bunch of other N64 NFRs from a former Nintendo employee if memory serves. I would take a picture but I'm lazy, it's basically the same as the normal back sticker you'd find on any other NFR, except it's more of a rectangle than a square. I also have CIB copies of the Taiwan and Hong Kong versions of the game (Used to have several other variants, but have since sold them off to fund other stuff.) The "holy grail" of my little collection is the Belgium-exclusive Feel Everything bundle though: But yeah, overall my tiny lil' collection pales in comparison to yours, haha. Super jealous of some of the stuff you have.
  20. I think the thing to take away from all this is that 1998 was an absolutely incredible year for gaming as a whole. Multiple groundbreaking titles all released back-to-back-to-back.
  21. Hey, I think I see that carbon fiber NES Advantage I gave you awhile back! Nice to see it on display like that
  22. That is the point- the way it works in Smash Bros is that your "life bar" is a percentage, which starts at 0%. Every time you take a hit, that percentage goes up, how much it goes up depends on the attack you got hit with, how powerful it is, etc. The higher that percentage is, the further you get knocked back when you get hit. So you start at 0%, you barely get knocked back at all when you get hit with anything. At 50%, you start flying back a little more when you get hit, at 100% you start really flying back, but as long as you don't get hit by particularly powerful attacks you'll probably be fine, and then by 300% if you get hit by pretty much anything you'll get sent careening across the whole screen. The end goal is still to knock your opponent far enough in any direction off-screen, but the percentage meter essentially acts as a pseudo-life bar to assist in that goal.
