  1. looking at finally clearing some long wait games. In Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball I'm currently up 1-0 in the first round of the ALDS over the damned Yankees. I'm a terrible hitter, or my team sucks at hitting (coincidentally I'm playing as Cleveland who lost the world series in the season this game simulates). Luckily most opponent hits here are pop flies or weak infield hits. The hardest part is that the game just takes a long time, and if you quit mid-game it counts as a loss. I think I can do it this time however.

Also going through Altered Space. Got a map going though I'm going to transfer it to orthographic paper soon for better clarity.

Been playing Qix since yesterday and I'm hooked. Why didn't anybody tell me the GB version was so good?! Looks like Nintendo did it in-house if I understand the title screen. 500k gonna be tough but I'll try. It's really fun to trap the evil squiggle.

Lastly, gonna try for Racing Days. Does anyone know if dirty racing has a save feature? Thought it would but I didn't see any way to save or continue. Overall a fun game though, so far anyway. Not sure why I hadn't seen it mentioned on GB lists before. Too easy?

    10. One of my favorite games of all time. I know people love to shit on sports games, and maybe rightfully so, but this is in a different category. The arcade style makes this games unbelievable playable. It's always been one of my favorite games and I'll die on that hill. A real successor to Tecmo Bowl and largely overlooked.

I'll commit nerd sacrilege and say I think I was wrong to always dump on sports games as a kid. Hating jocks isn't a reason to hate their sports games. There's definitely things happening there that I  What's worth hating is that they come out every year and that the used stores get flooded with them once they aren't up to date. Also the companies that make them get exclusivity deals and promptly stop making real effort. EA is a villain there but 2K Sports has their failures too, like the really terrible wrestling games that get pooped out with more bugs than Todd Howard's basement.

I also dislike that sports games are the cornerstone of EA's empire of evil that slaughters good devs, and dislike that so many sports fans don't care at all and just shell out every year for diminishing returns, but I see their position; Get the best fangame ever for your hobby at a fraction of the cost of even basic fan merchandise. And if you're not into games then you don't care about some nerd's favorite company being bought out and gutted. It is what it is, I'd just argue for the exclusivity deals to all get axed so that they had to actually try and compete.

  3. Have you cross-referenced these pictures against other tarot card sets? Frankly I struggle to see the connection on several of these being the fact that they're presenting the same base idea, and that the frame around the cars is the same. If you could demonstrate that the shared tropes were unique to these two sets and that they wouldn't have been typical or common in tarot sets available in the 80s and 90s, or if you could get some sort of affirmation from the nights artist, then I'd be more inclined to believe it. Otherwise it's more likely to me that the cards were modeled after similar motifs and depict the same subjects than it was an intentional homage.

    This week's results:

Question #36 (3/21-3/27) - When it comes to "farewell/separation", what game comes to mind?

    1 Final Fantasy II 22.0
    2 Dragon Quest III 13.7
    3 Dragon Quest IV 9.5
    4 Shin Onigashima 6.2
    5 Mother 5.6
    6 Fire Emblem 4.4
    7 Final Fantasy III 4.1
8 Portopia Renzoku Satsujin Jiken 2.7
    9 Ginga no Sannin 2.5
    10 Dead Zone 2.2
    11 Binary Land 2.0
    12 Lagrange Point 1.8
    13 Ghosts 'n Goblins 1.4
    14 Takeshi no Chousenjou 1.2
    15 Dragon Quest II 1.1
    16 Okhotsuku ni Kiyu 1.0
    17 Megami Tensei II 0.8
    18 Wizardry 0.8
    19 Ice Climber 0.7
    20 Ys II 0.6

Final Fantasy II is a good choice because of all the characters joining/leaving that 4th party slot throughout your adventure. This is also the first poll that any Final Fantasy game has won, compared to 6 for DQ so far.

Binary Land is an interesting answer, since you're controlling two characters at once and trying to reunite them. GNG is there because of the memorable (and unskippable) opening scene.

Next week's question: When it comes to "hidden gems", what game comes to mind?

I'm very curious to see the results of this one. Something like Gimmick comes to mind. Or maybe something like Battletoads or Kage (Shadow of the Ninja). I wonder what would win an NES hidden gems poll these days, because I feel like most of the answers from 20+ years ago are more well known now, like Metal Storm or River City Ransom.

at this point it's zapper games that aren't duck hunt because normal people don't have tube tvs around anymore. Can't be well known if nobody can play it!

On a more serious note, it's hard to say when we're on a forum that regularly plays every single NES game. Maybe journey to Silius? Lone Ranger would probably also qualify.

I'm going to say something outrageous: Mega Man and Castlevania games were better on the Game Boy than on the NES.

I also prefer GB Kid Icarus over the NES version.

Maybe you could also count Donkey Kong since it expands the arcade game to a completely new and original game.

And while not a straight up port, but if I wanted to play a Zelda game, then I would rather play Link's Awakening than the original The Legend of Zelda. The same with the Zelda-inspired Final Fantasy Adventure.

I love both 8 bit Nintendo machines, but CV and MegaMan? You crazy. And I'm one of those atypical CV fans who likes the gb games. Only real benefit I can think of is they are shorter than the console ones, so they aren't as much of a commitment to replay. Preferring them outright overall though? Guess now I understand how people feel when I say Link's Awakening is better than Zelda 3.

Dunno if I would count DK and kid icarus, aren't they all but completely different games? Like I would say the same about Golf except the first famicom game and the GB namesake are almost a decade apart (and it shows!) not to mention different courses and IIRC slightly different tuned physics. Thought the goal of this thread was for the same game released on both, like Dr Mario or Battle of Olympus. Maybe I am overthinking it however.

Sorry I didn't respond. The Play It Loud badge is for a complete set of all PIL colors. I'd probably allow some leniency when it comes to clear/white/blue ones, since I believe those were all region-specific.

And we're still making the 2023 badge. 😁

got it, I was confused since the guide said "one of or all of" a given set.

  7. @Splain should I post a nametag to show it's my Play it Loud system?

Also, here's the links for previous GB contest posts.

2023: Thought I participated last year but I can't find the thread.

    2022: Participation (completed 3 games)

    2020: Participation (completed 22 games)

...I'll work on 2024 if life lets me. And if the Sox quit ruining my playoff runs.

  8. gonna edit this later to confirm which years it was, but I for sure am up for most of the game boy contest participation badges, as well as the Play gb and the play it loud badge. pics later.

EDIT: here is the Play It Loud GB

...can I just say "I participated in all the gb yearly contests" so I don't have to dig through forum posts? 😝
