@koifish There was a Box Train in 2020, and I was late to sign up, but I asked if I could still join. The guy running it said, and I quote:

He must have been using speech-to-text or something, to get "beef or" instead of "before." So I said something dumb like "great! I love end beef" and then along the way, someone added some Slim Jims in the box. So it turned into a thing. But it definitely should not be in the box, lol.

that's pretty funny, thanks for the explanation.

Repair stuff is fine, Ive included stuff like new gears for N64 sticks. Something missing a battery cover isn't a very big deal i don't see a problem with something like that

got it. I'll use food judgment to proceed.

  2. I'm going into a possible opportunity to get a favorite game signed and I was curious, what kind of pen would last a long time on a game cart (plastic and label)? Since it's a dark label I was going to use a thin point silver sharpie, but if another pen has better hold then I could try and get one. This question may be anathema to many here (as we more frequently are trying to REMOVE pen, rather than add it) but I think in this case it's worth it to make the exception.

  3. is there any objections about including either 1) parts for things that might be useful to the repair person, or 2) stuff that almost completely works? The first is just loose parts from projects that I don't have a use for personally. My guess is its better suited for another thing. The second one I'm thinking of is an item that works 100% except the battery cover is broken. it would be fine if you replaced the battery cover, I just haven't been arsed to do it. Not sure if these two cases are okay or not.

There was a some kind of in joke when other people ran this about putting packs of crayons and/or jerky in the box. When I started doing this I nixed it. Id rather there be more room for gaming items and not just random stuff for a joke

oh ok, only idea I had was that it was some weird gag involving spam and canned cranberries.

  5. My secret santa was @fcgamer and he truly stole the show. I had asked for a variety of different ideas with the idea that maybe one or two things would shake out, and he went and hit a huge amount of the list, with a lot of interesting input of his own as well. Snacks, drinks, taiwanese green tea and a tea set to match (!), several very cool homebrews, a genuine taiwanese famicom original, a giant pile of extra famicom controller button inserts (fixed my famicom pads up good as new!), a stack of super famicom games (including many horse racing/derby simulators as I had hoped for), an original taiwanese switch game (!), and if that's not enough, a signed copy of his book about the history of unlicensed famicom games! (To give a sense of it all, the papers on the far-left are full-size printer pages). It's a ton of stuff! I've had a great time exploring all of the stuff he sent, and it definitely blew me away to get such a generous gift. If only I wasn't such a lousy photographer then I would have captured the display more effectively.

At this rate I might not even need to do secret santa next year; I'll still be busy with all the stuff I got! Once again, a huge thank you to fcgamer for his incredible generosity.

My secret Santa was amazing this year! I got some buckeyes (not pictured because they were devoured by myself and my family), a few really thoughtful and detailed letters explaining all the games, and an absolute ton of games & manuals.

Wally bear is a great choice, I've been meaning to play it and it's one of the (many) unlicensed NES games i don't own yet.

The manuals are awesome, I was reading out the description of the Buffalo bills to my family since we've always been fans. I didn't realize it was oversized, never seen one before I don't think

The famicom games are where the real treasure is though. My Santa picked out a while smorgasbord of games, all hand picked based on their experiences with the system and the games.

I couldn't have possibly asked for more, you really killed it! Unfortunately they didn't identify themselves but I appreciate you kind stranger

I only realized after I got my own SS gift that I forgot to identify myself. 😅 Glad to hear that you enjoyed the games! I had a ton of fun picking out your items! My only fear was that I would accidentally pick an FC Game with too high of Japanese language needs; I think you should be okay on all of them though. Hope you have a ton of fun!

  7. Yeah I'm with you @Sumez , I like the first final fantasy because it doesn't waste my time with big story arcs or with what the characters are feeling. I only wish characters were more disposable like in SaGa 1 and 2 or Wizardry, so if I decide to change my party it doesn't cost me starting the game over.

I've only played the WS version of this to any serious degree, but it feels like a good game. You can tell why it became a long-running series from how the first one plays out. I also like how it incorporates weird sci-fi stuff, like Ultima and Might and Magic did. It's not a game I would run to play though, simply because RPGs are only so interesting to play for someone who prefers dexterity games.

  8. My point of controversy is that I absolutely hate the existing norms for game genre names. I have a short essay I'm working on regarding this point, that I want to post here (on whatever forum such a diatribe belongs on) but in short, I think video game genre naming needs an enema, and the community needs to basically rewrite the history of game genres from the ground up.

It deeply upsets me that it doesn't feel that long ago at all that we had the Famicom's 30th anniversary. I even got a Famicom around that time... 2013...

Time needs to slow way down.

yeah, doesn't help there was basically no anniversary celebrations from 2020 to 2022. A shame, didn't get anything for super famicom 30th that I can recall.

For those who still don't know me... The answer is yes.

Just not with Sony. I had issues with them during their PlayStation 3 days. To the point I did something that had their lawyers call me up to say that they were going to look into the HafuGirl issue (that many were bringing up for months in their forums). And using their consoles ended after my second attempt at owning a PlayStation 4, which turned out to be a boring experience.

But past that? I do miss the simplicity of an older controller. But I love the fact that I can play both modern and retro games on a single console. With my only complaint with Nintendo is that they do not offer Dragon Warrior I-IV as part of their online service offerings.

You know, I wanna bring up one complaint about classic game download/stream offerings that is hitting me nowadays, which is that I can't port my old saves from some of these games. Sure, NES/SNES games it doesn't matter much, because they're short, or because they have passwords, but some of those N64 and even GBC/GBA unlocks would be pure drudgery to do twice, and I shudder to think of it if we ever have GameCube to contend with. I know it's basically impossible, and really I should live with it as it is and play the cart I have on the console I still own, but if you're gonna sell me on having N64 games, it would be nice sometimes to have an "I already did this shit" option and just get a 100% save loaded in. No way am I gonna have time to unlock all of the Mario Tennis star characters and extra courts a second time. Then imagine if you had to do something like get all the emblems in sonic adventure 2 again. Save me from that nightmare, please!
