Nice to see the hardest proper action game on the system is done. If you beat the American version you deserve a medal. Probably the only game harder is the puzzle game Timeball, though the simulation game Gunboat is also worth mentioning for demanding extreme patience.

Yes, it was the American version.  What about R Type?  I hear that one is pretty tough.  I played a bit of Timeball, but couldn't get into it.  I could see it being a pain.

  2. I beat Project Horned Owl not too long ago.

I think Irritating Stick can be considered done too.  I cleared the TV and Arcade course and there were credits at the end of the Arcade ones.  I did not clear the AI courses though.  Clearing a course in that mode isn't enough to move on the next one.  I cleared up to 49, but it won't let me move on to a higher one.  It seems if you're not quick enough, it won't let you move on.  I actually did all this last year, then did it again fairly recently.

In case they're interested, I'm going to tag @Splain, @Jeevan and @RH for this post because they were participants in the N64 contest from a while back where we played the Japanese version, Ucchannanchan no Hono no Challenger: Denryu Iraira Bo.  The PS1 version seems a lot easier than the N64 version.  You don't select the speed of the stick at the beginning.  Instead, you can change the speed at any time with the X and square buttons.  It almost makes the analog control pointless since it's a lot easier to change your speed with these buttons than with the tilt of the analog.  It also give you a bunch of extra lives and continues.  There are 3 difficulty settings, but you still get extra lives and continues on hard.  Several of the segments seem easier to navigate as well.

Nice - I'll have to add Side Arms to my "want" list, then!

And I've heard enough scathing reviews of Deep Blue to keep my distance haha.

You've been on a tear with these TurboGrafx-16 clears lately - makes me want to play more of them, myself!

I'm running out of games to play, so I'll be slowing down soon.

I did play through Fantasy Zone though.  Also tried to beat the second loop of Deep Blue.  I get the feeling you can be put in an impossible situation in the last stage though.  I'm not into it enough to keep trying and find out, so I'm done with that one for now.

What is the trick to getting these very high scores? How come when I play the ball always eventually chaotically bounces between the bumpers and then shoots down the side or between the paddles with nothing I can do about it?

As @Bearcat-Doug said, it's good to start the game with the center stopper on the lower screen.  Don't even try to start scoring on the top screen at the beginning.  Let the ball fall to the lower screen and flip all the cards first.  You can sometimes aim the ball to fall through to flip the jack, queen and king, but I haven't found a reliable way to flip the 10 or the ace.

Keeping the side stoppers is important too.  If you lose one of them, it's usually a good idea to try to get it back before trying to get back to the upper screen.  Doing so can be risky though.  Depend on which stage each of the eggs/chicks are in, I may not bother and I'll just shoot for the upper screen and hope for the best when the ball falls back down.

Other than that, it's just getting a feel for how to hit the ball to minimize the risk of it going somewhere you don't want to.  Always be mindful of where the moving bar in the upper level is when taking a shot.  It's usually good to try to hold the ball with your flipper so you can make a more controlled shot, but be careful when trying to catch when it's moving fast.  Doing so may just make it bounce where you don't want it.

    Ah, that's Devil's Crush/Dragon's Fury, right?

You got it!  It's Dragon's Fury.  You wouldn't be able to recognize it as Devil's Crush from the first two pictures.  The first one is from the high scores screen, which is less elaborate in Devil's Crush and doesn't have the image of the woman.  The second one is from one of the bonus stages that doesn't exist in Devil's Crush.  Only the third picture would be similar in both games.

As good as you are at NES pinball games I thought you might roll the score. Almost 547k on one ball is still amazing.

Thanks.  I think rolling the score is doable.  I made multiple mistakes in this attempt, so I wouldn't blame losing the ball entirely on bad luck, at least not on this run.  Maybe I'll try it again someday.

This was one of the first games my grandpa bought for his NES.  I played it a lot and I think I enjoy it more now that I did as a kid because I understand the bit of strategy you can use.  I'm sure it’s not the best NES Pinball game but considering it’s historic place in Nintendo’s game line-up, I think it’s fantastic.

I feel the same way.  I think I like pinball games in general better now than I did back in the day.

I played this a bit last night and tonight.  I broke 400K last night, but only got around 300K tonight.  I'll give it another go tomorrow night.

Would you recommend Side Arms for someone who likes shoot-em-ups, but not run-and-guns?

I can't tell if it's more like Burai Fighter (which I love) or Contra (which I'm lukewarm about, at best).

    [T-Pac]

Yes.  It's not a run-and-gun at all.  It's a really basic horizontal shooter.  It's only gimmick is you press the II button to shoot left and the I button to shoot right.

Now a horizontal shooter I wouldn't recommend is Deep Blue, which can be considered beaten if one loop is good enough.  At the end of the first loop the screen just says "Next".  I'm not sure if that changes for the second loop.

Yo Bro is done.  Can't say it's a good game, but it's not terrible.  I appreciated them trying something unique with the controls, but it was too much of a pain to line up your shots.

    No thanks.

Super Star Soldier is done too.  Another good vertical shooter.

Anyone else playing anything?  @RetroMichel, how's Boxyboy going?  Looks like your were almost done...a year and a half ago.  @bronzeshield, make any attempts at Davis Cup Tennis, Double Dungeons, Hit the Ice, or Moto Roader?

You may have misinformation as my personal files do not list Yo Bro as having any TB+ support of any kind...

I figured it out.  It auto-saves, but doesn't give you any indication that it's saving, and if you don't have enough space to save, it won't tell you.  After deleting some files, I started a new game and beat the first level and then turned the power off.  When I turned it back on and started a game, it asked if I wanted load my previous game.
