  1. 8. Pretty neat game. Better than Sonic 1, not as good as Sonic 3 & Knuckles. Even if you're not dragging Tails along I think the bonus levels in this one are actually pretty terrible. Have beaten the game several times but never even came close to having enough Emeralds for Super Sonic. I'd say they're the worst Bonus stages I've seen in Sonic but, uh, Sonic Advance's are probably even worse! The final boss's hitbox/hurtbox at certain points seems janky as hell. It's a pretty easy fight once you understand the patterns and play in total safety but a fairly dragged out and not especially fun one. Whereas if you actually open yourself up to meaningful interaction with the boss, sooner or later it always seemed to result in me taking a hit that didn't seem to square with what I saw happen on-screen - it felt especially bad while he's taking off.
  2. So is the original Fire Emblem "really" a Switch game? Me, I haven’t delved far enough into either to think I have a sufficiently informed opinion overall. Ones I've beaten ranked: SNES: Chrono Trigger Super Mario RPG Final Fantasy VI Final Fantasy IV Final Fantasy V Live-A-Live Front Mission Breath of Fire Secret of Mana Final Fantasy Mystic Quest PS1: Final Fantasy VII Final Fantasy Tactics Xenogears Final Fantasy IX Parasite Eve Final Fantasy VIII Threads of Fate Chrono Cross I'd take SNES out of that overall but that's where my childhood/teen nostalgia is, so I would, wouldn't I?
  3. *site isn’t working again.* Damnit ... *Deletes an s in the url.* Works. Yay.
  4. Good, not great. The Metroidvania games from Aria of Sorrow onward are generally better. I assume I don't need to break down what's cool about Symphony of the Night? I'll add I actually like the charm of some of the kinda awkward PS1 presentation stuff here, the legendary voice acting obviously chief among it. The problems: -The amount of nonlinearity does not gel well with the RPG elements. Don't go in whatever exact right order the developers had in mind and you'll probably later hit an area where basically nothing can deal meaningful damage to you. This game would have been improved had experience and levels not existed and the game been rebalanced accordingly. I kind of suspect the RPG elements are covering up some questionable action design in parts although the question of "why isn't this part good" is kind of academic when substantial parts of the game aren't that fun regardless of the reason. -The inverted castle is often the epitome of the previous problem, is not-infrequently kind of boring, and it's, uh, half the game. -Weird personal problem here but I have trouble tolerating fighting game inputs and don't really appreciate transplanting them to a genre and context I otherwise like where they have little benefit. Magic in this game basically doesn't even exist to me. -The menu sucks but it never really bothered me too much. I think they also still require up plus a button to use subweapons which is pretty silly. Dracula's Castle Hallway Simulator is still pretty good though.
  5. The translation patch for Tales of Destiny 2 is currently in progress (100% of text is translated, 86% localized, 81% proofread) and should see a release this year or next. The PS2 Tales of Destiny remake has a complete translation patch. Tales of Rebirth has some kind of translation patch project going on as well but I'm under the impression it's not particularly close to finishing. The consensus on the console games with 3D battle systems seems to be that the battles get better with each non-sequel game from Symphonia -> Abyss -> Vesperia -> Graces and then for the games from Graces onwards it kind of plateaus and comes down to personal preference but they generally stays above Vesperia level aside from possibly (probably?) Zestiria being a downgrade. So it might be difficult to go backwards on some of those. So Abyss next might be a good idea. Abyss is polarizing but unlike with Legendia its overall reception is quite good and if you want "kind of like Symphonia" it's the obvious next game to go with, boasting very similar combat and production values to Symphonia. Just, uh. Well, there's like a non-insane 10% or something of its players that basically hates it for certain story reasons. Without giving spoilers, you'll...probably see why this might be the case pretty soon into it. I'd strongly recommend to not immediately bounce if this is the case for you and consider why the developers might have done that, but if you're totally unable to cope a few hours in then it might not be the game for you. Symphonia: Dawn of the New World and Legendia have significant problems. Dawn of the New World has some funny skits but is...not really that good of a game. I guess ask yourself if you're okay just spending more time with the cast and setting of the first game even if the rest of it is pretty meh. Some people do like Legendia a lot and it does have some strong points but maybe don't go in expecting/needing a super-great game. Biggest but not only issue with Legendia is the battle system having issues so if you don't mind the possibility of the combat sucking sometimes I'd say try it at some point.
  6. https://www.chronocompendium.com/Term/Underweight:_The_BMIs_of_Chrono_Cross.html chrono anorexia
  7. in case we ever get around to actually listing the super famicom games beaten, magic knight rayearth finished. 3/10 It’s just a really lame standard JRPG with too high of a random encounter rate yet no real difficulty, a not very good condensed retread of the anime for its story, and nothing in particular really going for it.
  8. wow. How much for the autographed official art of King Harkinian from Link: The Faces of Evil signed by the character designer?
  9. Finished Brandish. 5/10 Wasn’t that into this one but I saw some potential here and am intrigued enough to play the second SNES game and maybe if I ever get into PSP the remake.
  10. -Great visuals and soundtrack (but with the latter slightly marred by having one of the worst JRPG battle themes on the PS1 - of course the stinker would be the song you’ll be hearing the most) -A battle system with some decent ideas that gets by well enough on being different but that doesn’t really come together as anything that special. -50-gazillion joinable characters-CHA with annoying accents-CHA and anorexic height and weight stats-CHA that are just along for the ride-CHA in a game with mere three-person parties where you can’t even switch out the main-CHA. Seemed like they had way more wacky party member ideas-CHA than the game had any real use for either in plot or gameplay but stuffed them all in anyways-CHA. Kind of fun but I was like PLEASE STOP when it had four more characters-CHA join me in the space of a single cutscene-CHA. And while I think the silent protagonist is actually kind of artistically justified here-CHA, having one of those with most of the rest of the group being one off jokes doesn’t exactly lead to compelling cast chemistry-CHA. -A really weird kind of incoherent story. I respect the themes and ambition here and the way the game keeps upending itself but the pacing could certainly be better and for all that the weirdness can be a draw, I think the game end up playing its cards too close to the chest. And yeah the characters mostly being like THAT-CHA (okay I’ll stop I promise) didn’t help. seemed like they ran out of time or something in development, hence why they had to give all that vital exposition to weird NPCs immediately before the final boss. Not great execution there! I only played the game once though (so yeah I didn’t New Game+ and so missed the alternate endings and other minor content) and maybe the story will come off a little better if I play the whole thing again basically already knowing where it’s going with all this. -In a lot of ways not much of an effective followup to Chrono Trigger but eh, let CC be its own thing. i was annoyed at a lot of things in this game during my one playthrough but it’s such a bizarre singular experience with some strong positives as well that I look back on it positively. ”But is it better than Chrono Trigger or some of Square’s top PS1 games?” oh god no
  11. Well there's also the sheer pain caused by having some of Mario Party 1's minigames using THAT control stick. Hard to replicate that experience elsewhere!
  12. Super Mario 64 seems like it would probably be better to repeatedly replay over and over but at this point I don't generally like playing games that way. I prefer to be done with games and after I've beaten them and done all the side content I wanted to, it's probably best to move on, maybe revisiting several years later if I feel the urge. So voted Ocarina of Time. Also I understand and experienced myself why people were impressed with the Wing Cap back in the day but I don't particularly like it at this point. Only ever gotten to 119 stars, the missing one being the secret star on the opposite side from the entrance to Rainbow Ride. screw you wing cap you denied me yoshi!
  13. Beat Lagoon yesterday. I was totally hoping this game would be better than its reputation and that people were just whining about the attack range so that I could be a total snob towards the unenlightened masses but...no, no, this game just mostly isn't very good. There's some good music and I generally liked the boss fights and was amused by how the game seemed to enforce "either cheese the absolute hell out of this fight, grind a ridiculous amount, or lose" for some of them but that's about it.
  14. Sonic Blast Man I guess at the top end of 5/10. Basically competent, not much more than that.
  15. look man if it’s not at least longer than dragon warrior vii and umineko put together it’s barely even worth bothering with
  16. The Flintstones: The Treasure of the Sierra Madrock. Didn’t take a picture. 5/10 NES Flintstones were both superior. The “levels” here quickly all ran together. also how do you not have a final boss or at least a real climax, what happened with this game.
  17. welp, doesn't matter what the white house calls it anymore, it's happened! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBMeMrPuQyU
  18. both all hail the super nintendo
  19. Original RE1 is still fun enough but so much of the game is tied up in an atmosphere that doesn't work particularly well at this point. The lighting, characters models, and terrible dialogue have really aged the scares to an extent that isn't nearly as true for PS1 RE2 and RE3 and those have gameplay improvements as well. Meanwhile REmake remains one of the best looking Gamecube games.
  20. Arcana. I guess it’s nice that for once an old 1st person dungeon crawler doesn’t drag on too long, was if anything too easy, and was not grindy. And it has an automap so it’s far from the worst thing like this I’ve played. Nothing here is very inspiring though. 4/10
  21. Tomba. Relatively early but I think I already hate this game. Guess I’m giving up. I’m baffled that people actually like this thing.
  22. soul reaver 2 had to redo the entire Dark Forge section. oh my god what is with this franchise and bizarre progress-stopping glitches at least this one didn't brick my save file
  23. Anyone with sufficient cross-genre experience want to sell me on how the better SNES WRPGs compare to, say, Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei (decent I guess) and Shin Megami Tensei 1 (thought it was sort of good but had issues)? I've also played Phantasy Star 1 but I...don't like that game or think it is at all good so yeah. Also would the PC versions still be a serious option if I'm not willing to use keyboard and mouse? yeah, Mega Man 7's final boss is probably too hard for it's own good. I'd never stoop to using an Energy Tank mid-boss on the NES games but had no guilt whatsoever about going deep into the Tank supply on that one! Maybe I'll git gud someday. I'm not a racing game dude and have only dabbled in F-Zero but I'm not sure "one (real) gameplay mode" does full justice to actually spelling out "single-player racing game." And...as much as people complain about Mario Kart's rubber band AI, the band in those only stretches so far. pretty sure it's not just my imagination and that F-Zero actually outright forbids the other racers from falling more than slightly behind you. I'd bitch about Secret of Mana being high but you...really already covered most of it yourself. I don't even know what to do with THESE FEELINGS now. this is your fault you have DONE THIS TO ME. Only thing left for me to complain about is it being above Illusion of Gaia, which felt to me like the much more well-rounded game and it seems like your respective reviews would probably even support that. Does Terranigma or Soul Blazer take your top spot for that series? Think I'll agree on Lufia II feeling a little low but I haven't played a lot of the games above it and it's far enough into the "good games" section that it's hard to be too upset. And...for turn-based JRPGS there's only like...FFII, III, SMRPG, Earthbound, and Chrono Trigger above it. That's not bad company.
  24. noooooo you CANNOT give in to the WHINY BABIES if someone really wants to easily find the ranking of any particular game on the list they should put on their big boy pants and make their own damn spreadsheet!
