  1. Hey all, just wanted to share that we've completed some routine maintenance on the site. This included a security patch, as well as some new features. First off if you're on mobile (phone etc) you might notice a little popup that says you can add VGS to your home screen. This is a PWA version of the site and is really just a container which you can launch, as it says, from your home screen. It can actually be pretty handy if you're a very regular user on VGS, as it becomes app-like in how it runs, and will be separate from your usual browser tab system. Of course this is all entirely optional and you can just click the little "x" if you don't want it. Further, the latest forum software update came with a new ranking system which we're going to be rolling out. It's similar to the existing badges we have in place now, but more closely tied to your actual forum activity, posting, following content, sharing, likes, etc.. It's pretty robust and I'm excited to dig into it to see what we can do with it. As ever, thanks to all of you for being here, and especially to the subscribers whose support pays for the site. You're directly impacting our ability to keep the site alive and updated for the future!
  2. There has been an update applied today which improves the functionality of the "User posts in thread" plugin! You can now quote, multi-quote, and reply to the thread from directly within the focused user page: Games of Werewolf just got even easier to manage! xD @FireHazard51
  3. Your privacy is important to us here at VGS. Knowing how people interact with the site with in-depth data can certainly be interesting, and can definitely provide insight into what works and what doesn't, where people find themselves hanging out the most, etc.. That said, the software upon which the community is built does have built-in metrics which are generally sufficient for our purposes. We have the data, no real need to give it to Google too. Google Analytics (via Google Tag Manager) was enabled on the site from the outset in order to help us to learn and grow, but it is in my mind not worth it. While it has provided insights, it's not worth the invisible price, which is Google getting data on us all. I do want to make it clear - having Google Analytics is completely normal. We're going a bit against the grain here because hey - we can! With the support of subscribers and occasional donations, we're more than capable of running this place for a long time. We don't need to number crunch data to make this a success, you've already done that. And together we'll keep making this house a home.
  4. There's a handy new feature on the forum where we can add acronyms to a sort of dictionary in the backend, which lets users hover over the acronym on a post to see what it stands for. Here's a prime example: VGS If you hover/click on "VGS" above, you should see a little "Video Game Sage" appear. This can help people who are new to collecting to know the acronyms we all take for granted. So here is where I ask you, the pros - what acronyms should we add to the dictionary? Obviously I can think of a bunch myself, but I figured asking you all would get me the acronyms YOU are most likely to actually be using on a day to day basis. This will make it more useful much more quickly. SO! Gimme the deets. Share some commonly used acronyms and what they stand for, and I'll add (most of) them to our dictionary.
  5. A new version of Invision (the software running VGS) has been released, and in order to keep things running smoothly I'll have to take the site down for a bit. Here's what I need to do: Back up the custom styles etc. that have been built for VGS Take down the site Update the software Re-apply the customizations Confirm that it all works as expected Put the site back up Barring any issues I don't envision this taking a terribly long time, maybe an hour. The site will go down sometime during the day this upcoming Friday, September 4th. I'll be aiming for around noon or so, but we'll have to see. I'll post a reminder an hour or so before I press the big red button. During the downtime, you can feel free to join us on Discord over here: https://discord.gg/5tuxaqD Or better yet take a walk, stretch your legs. Maybe grab a Starbucks. I'll take a grande PSL, thanks.
  6. I see a future where we have cool banners at the top of announcements, ones I didn't whip up in 2 minutes. Really wicked awesome Baubles and Charms that actually look good. Subscription tiers with banners representing them, and site articles with nice drawings, and a front page, and a logo that isn't just some text in an 8-bit style font, and this and that and those and these... I see a future where @BortLicensePlate and @CasualCart help us to make this place look... Everyone please join me in welcoming the newest members of the VGS Staff, those two inanimate objects I mentioned above! The Cart and License Plate are gonna GET animated as they help us spruce this place up with... well all the stuff I whined about in the opening paragraph, and more! Please look forward to it!
