Beat every Game Boy game - 2021 - 154/497

Editorials Team · Posted

Let's keep playing Game Boy games in 2021!

- Games must be started and finished no earlier than January 1, 2021, EST.
- No cheat codes, game genie codes, glitches etc. may be used
- Emulation is allowed, but no save states, altered roms, or any advantages over playing on original hardware. (Super Game Boy and Game Boy Player are allowed.)
- Game saves and passwords can only be used if they are obtained from a fresh new game, started this year.
- Photos are not required, but they're fun.

Scoring is based on how many times each game has been beaten in a previous year's thread. Each game beaten is worth at least 1 point. Games that have not been beaten every year since 2013 are worth an extra .5 points per non-beaten year. Games that have never been beaten are worth an additional half-point. So each game ranges from 1 to 5.5 points, as shown in the table below.

    - 100% completion is not required, thus the default or “normal” difficulty is typically fine.
    - Definite ending or credits screens are king. If a game has a “bad” ending and a “good” ending, the “good ending” is typically required.
    - If a game loops indefinitely, only one loop is required.
    - Specific requirements are given for each game, though they're always a work in progress. I tried to anchor the requirements for trickier "unending" games to actual in-game metrics, such as high score tables, obvious loops, etc. So if some requirements seem too easy/hard, it’s because I didn’t find a better anchor.
    - Games with indisputable endings might only say “Complete,” but I’d like to eventually include how many levels/stages/rounds are in the game, as that can be useful for first-timers. (e.g., Complete All 8 Stages)
    - If anything looks off, or if you want to challenge/discuss these metrics, please do so.

Games not in the list:
- Wisdom Tree unofficial releases
- Pokemon Yellow: due to the presence of a GBC header in the ROM of Pokemon Yellow, it is included in the GBC completion thread, coming soon. For real this time.
- 5 Infogenius titles: These are too much fun and would spoil the rest of the list.
- Mortal Kombat 1&2 (single cart): Games tracked individually, since each has its own cart
- Asteroids/Missile Command: Games tracked individually, since each has its own cart
- Centipede (Accolade) and Centipede (Majesco) are consolidated into one entry, since gameplay is identical across both titles.

Centipede/Millipede and Race Days each include entire games that exist on their own cart. Completion requirements focus only on the modes that aren’t already represented on those other carts.

Does anybody know if there is something significant about this weird black spot on a wall in the second adventure? I'm in the castle and it looks like there's some weird indicator with a bat spawning in front of it, and then I cannot figure out what it is. Anybody know? It sort of looks like a cracked wall. I will revisit it in time, but I'm not sure what it is.

  • The title was changed to Beat every Game Boy game - 2021 - 8/497

Adventure Island is complete.

Expanding on that short statement, I had some time yesterday, and so I did the apocryphal and kept my GB turned on all day and went back to it as I had a moment to clear a level or two. The game would be nicer if it had continues, but now that I see how short it is, maybe it is for the best. The platforming isn't too bad; Many levels are designed to be run through at max speed. But then it is mixed in with other levels that are designed to be played slowly and cautiously. Feel it out on each one; That said, if you are a platform master then you shouldn't struggle with the speed ones. As for the bosses, well, they are all easily spammed. Just stand as close as you're comfortable doing and spam B, then jump out of the way when they fire their one projectile after a few seconds. They will then warp away, but will just repeat the same gimmick. Not worth worrying about.

Overall not bad, just annoying with the lack of continues. It would take a few hours of straight play to beat this game,  so don't go into it unless you've got time to spare.

Oh, also, there are warps in this game. I found at least one; It was in world 3, level 1 or 2, and you just had to find a hidden egg. I found it because the monster I was riding had the power to shoot laser bolts, and while spamming them, I saw a spot where the bolts suddenly collided with thin air. The egg was hiding in that spot, and once you found it, the resulting platform took you to a warp zone to skip the rest of the island. I suspect there are other warp eggs, I just never found any of them.

Last year, I didn't get to announce my first clear of the year until May.  Now, even though I'm not getting nearly as much time this week to play as I thought thanks to some last minute scheduling, I get to already put my name on the board.

Lethal Weapon is done.

This game would be brutal if it weren't for one key feature:  You can play as either Riggs or Murtaugh and whomever is off-screen will slowly recover health. I wasn't able to find a manual, so I don't know if this is supposed to be known from the start or something you can discover, but I learned it from watching Moelleuh's stream. If I didn't know I could sit for a couple minutes to let health replenish, I could see this being extremely difficult. You get the life bars of both characters but once they're both dead, you have to continue, and I think you only get one. Maybe you can earn more, but I didn't risk it. I stopped to wait and made a slow meandering walk to the bosses.  Along the way, I saw a few different enemy designs, but they all played the same from what I could tell.  You have a gun and your fists, but the gun is largely worthless. If you're too far, they'll chuck a bunch of grenades, so it's best to get close and punch. The gun takes just as many hits to kill as your punch anyway, if not more, and your ammo can run out.  The levels look okay. There is a helicopter in the last level that pops up a few times and is neat to look at, but its a total pushover.  The bosses are also extremely easy and the difficulty comes from the slog of dealing with a seemingly never-ending corridor of enemies.  The game also lacks any story. No cut scenes, no text, no anything other than a map to show what level you're going to next. Pretty disappointing all around.

Next, I'm looking to try out Panel Action Bingo. Might get to start that tomorrow.

Oh, @Splain, thanks again for setting all of this up!  When you get a chance, you may want to double check some of the point values. I noticed that Riddick Bowe and NBA Jam TE both have the full 5.5 points for a "never been cleared" value, but those were taken down at the end of 2020. I didn't really look at any others, but noticed those in bold as I was quickly scrolling through.

Thanks @Floating Platforms, I definitely missed those last 2 clears, or at least I didn't get them into the actual spreadsheet, so it messed the points up. I think I got everything else. That means our (North American) total for 2020 was 225, about 45%. Maybe this year we can hit 50%!

I played Panel Action Bingo a couple years ago. The AI has a very strict strategy of relentlessly going for the next number, and doesn't care about getting a bingo at all. So for as long as you camp on the next number without claiming it, the AI will camp on the one after that, and you have all the time in the world to plan your game out and find a gettable bingo.

I was thinking and wondered, does anybody know of a website that catalogs game magazine scans, but even better, one that has OCR and has thus made searchable text out of the pages? It would be really helpful to be able to look up if any of these random games had a tips+tricks page or even just a basic overview article written somewhere back when they were contemporary titles.

This also reminds me of my not-so-active initiative to write new, better FAQs on GameFAQs to replace the ones that were created as filler. I don't know when it happened, but somewhere along the line, GFAQs users started a project to put at least one FAQ up for every game in the website's database. Unfortunately, that meant sometimes the FAQ provided only the most basic surface info, or even missed things (I think I remember Gauntlet II's only FAQ saying that potions did nothing, like seriously?).

We here as a collective are probably the greatest currently existing wealth of GB tips and tricks out there, barring the streamers that others mentioned last thread. If we could leverage that at some point then it would be pretty groovy. Course, we've been saying that for a while I think. Maybe someday it will come true!

Problem is that these things take a LOT of time. I remember watching a video from the aforementioned Jeremy Parish who did a review on an interesting Japan-exclusive RPG called Ayakashi no Shiro. At that time there was no fan translation available, so he didn't make it very far, i.e. the very first floor. But I was intrigued, beat the game and uploaded a longplay. I also drew maps and wanted to create a walkthrough as well, but it just took so much time that I gave up eventually. Otherwise I would have done more like that.

Yeah, I wrote a few FAQs for GameFaqs a while back, for GB and N64 games that didn't have them. I didn't do a whole lot of them, and they sure do take a lot of time, but some of those existing FAQs are awful. There's one author in particular who wrote a ton of those fillers (just a review of the controls and some incorrect first-glance impressions about the game) and when I see that they wrote the FAQ, I don't even bother looking at it. I already started making one for a game that already had one FAQ, because that FAQ is literally worse than no FAQ at all.

On NA we had that strategies thread, where I collected notes and tips from the completion threads. Like @Floating Platforms's notes about Lethal Weapon. I still have those notes, we could bring that back as sort of a midway point between nothing, and a full writeup.

And yes, I added an extra half-point to unbeaten games, so that they would be worth a full point more than games that have been beaten once. But PAL exclusives, I'm not sure what to do with those. US games have been tracked since 2012, and PAL exclusives only 2-3 years. So the point values will basically always be higher, even for common/easy titles like Othello or GB Gallery. So I didn't add an extra half-point there since they're already inflated. But I don't want to de-incentivize those games, especially the ones that have never been beaten. Maybe it's time to move to a more dynamic point system like the NES thread uses...

I think the only ones to take off are Riddick Bowe, NBA Jam TE and Lethal Weapon.  I'm not sure how many first time clears I'll have this year. So many of them are sports and to keep variety, I only play 3-4 (5, if you count racing) for every 25 games.

I recall a conversation about possibly getting a wiki or something together at some point as well. My thought was to have one page dedicated to each game to outline tips, have screenshots, manuals, list potential endings, codes/passwords, and whatever other details would be good to relay & document. No idea if VGS would be a place to house that or if it's better to go through some wiki site or do it on wordpress.  I always have so many projects running around in my head, but with other people involved something might actually get done with them.  Maybe if we're not bound to the gamefaqs FAQ structure and can simply edit whatever pieces we know and let others fill in gaps as they have time it would feel less daunting.

^ a reasonable point, there is a lot of framework that is expected of a GameFAQs page. The only reason I think of it is that it still stands as an ancient pillar of world wide web supply for game info, so it seemed appropriate. There aren't many still in it that are that old; Maybe it means the site will still remain as an faq supplier.

Come to think of it, I wonder if there's a backup of GF FAQs. Would be crazy to lose all of that info someday!

Anyway, I'm bored of Rolan's Curse at the moment, so I'm going to switch to one of the unbeaten games, "Out to Lunch" . Seems like a reasonable platformer; Just catch all the runaway food and put it in a cage. Tap B to throw balls that stun the food, then hold B next to them and you'll use a cape flip move that captures them. Getting hit by an enemy causes you to let some of the enemies you've gathered go free, and you are on a time limit, so you have to go without making mistakes but also without running back to the start of the level to fill the cage.

Panel Action Bingo is done but with a correction needed to the description. The game is 60 levels (30 counting up if doing numbers or A-Z if letters; 30 going down/Z-A).  I went through the numbers all the way and went through 10 levels of the letters, which was enough to see that the picture you slowly uncover is the same so I think both produce the same ending.

The only similarity to bingo in this game is that you need to match 5 in a row, but otherwise it plays like a flash game you might find on AOL. I lost my first life because I was expecting bingo and waiting for numbers to be called. No, you need to select the numbers in order before the CPU to match 5 in a row.  I found the whole thing to be very monotonous and would be better served with either more variety built-in or half as many levels. It was either far too easy or far too difficult and there were only a couple levels with each grouping of 30 where you needed to employ much strategy. Otherwise it was a cake-walk or heavily luck based.  On the last levels, I devised a strategy to try to park on a specific row or column and only focus on those numbers while hoping the CPU cat didn't get a bingo first or ruin my line. Took a few tries, but it wound up being effective.

I'm moving on to what should be a shorter game in "Tale Spin."  If it's as short as people say, I might be able to get another game done besides that too!

  • The title was changed to Beat every Game Boy game - 2021 - 11/497

As a random fling the other day, I booted up All-Star Baseball '99, and I noticed it looks really similar to Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball.

Checked out on video, looks like they might be almost the exact same game! They have identical opening music, a different logo image, but the same menu, and the gameplay looks the same too. I wonder if it is literally the same game, or if they just took the existing game, updated the roster, and shipped it as a new title. It wouldn't be the first time we've seen game boy tie-ins be more or less copycat titles; Recall that I found last year that College Slam is basically NBA Jam TE but with college teams and a different league/tournament setup.

A quick wikipedia search showed me the truth: Frank Thomas Big Hurt Baseball was the immediate predecessor to All-Star Baseball. The version of '99 is probably the same game with an updated roster, if that. Now to see if any FAQ has a breakdown of character stats, etc. so that one could compare and see if Big Hurt on GB is the same as All-Star 99 on GB. Compare them visually, and they look identical. I'm not sure what else could be different. Maybe somebody knows how to track down the developers? XD
