Funny this topic came up. As I get closer to death my wife is getting more insistent I sell it all ( just hate to sell things; especially to collectors). I decided to put together an excel sheet of it all. I only collect CIB and 99% of my collection is CIB. I also collect box variants so I have multiple copies of the same game with different boxes (Gameboy GBC GBA and DS mainly for variants).

  2. I don't think you will find any Electronic Arts games with that sticker. EA handled the fabrication of their own games, and it's my understanding they also handled the distribution of their games. For example, EA distributed their games in Taiwan (where they were all fabricated), so there's a huge disproportionate amount of EA games here compared to other NA games.

@fcgamer bro do you store famicom games in like your walls and shit? I though apartments/housing in Taiwan is like very small and minimal?

My apartment is quite big for the area, luckily, and the price is also quite a steal for the area. That being said, I'm in the same boat as @MegaMan52 as I have games and machines stashed away in cabinets in basically all rooms of the apartment, aside from the bathroom, though in the living room, aside from the television set up, there are not many games or anything on display.

I do have some really nice glass cabinets built into the walls in the living room, and I've often considered just using them exclusively to display the prime gaming stuff, boxing the rest up, and then turning the current game room (which is quite small) into an office area. The only problem with that is I really hate the idea of people possibly defining me by my games, whenever I host parties or invite friends / dates / family over. It's certainly a part of my life, and it's certainly not something I am ashamed of, but at the same time feeling like I have to "explain" it or "justify" it anytime a non-game collector is over doesn't sound very fun, especially when my actual time playing games and the like is quite limited.

  4. So I was at a restaurant today eating soup containing taro, pork, noodles, and some veg. I thought it was really delicious and thought about taking my father to the shop when he comes to visit. Then I stopped and thought about it for a moment, nope, he wouldn't fancy the soup because he hates having to deal with bones with his meat, as does my mother, and many other Americans that I know.

On the other hand, I know a lot of people in Asia prefer eating meat with the bones as they feel the meat in those areas is more tender and flavorful. I used to find the bones a nuisance, but after being in Taiwan for so long, I don't mind just shoving meat into my mouth, manipulating it off the bones, and then spitting the bones back out into the spit bucket or whatever.

So I'm curious how the VGS group feels about bones in their meat.

  5. Okay here's what I have. I'm pretty sure I have some homebrew and other items that somehow didn't make it onto the list, then again the copied PlayStation stuff is on here (any probably could be removed). Also am pretty sure I have about 100 SFC CIB titles that I never bothered to document, so with those things accounted / not accounted for, the number at the bottom is more or less correct.

Right?  Like, when I saw that comment where 2500 seemed small, it kinda confused me.  I have more than double that, but 2500 games is still a massive collection.  Even Gloves at 550 has a hell of a collection.  Saying it's small is some weird passive aggressive overcompensation imo.

Not really, I was thinking in terms of managing and taming the beast after one has passed. I would presume that most of the collectors here would have documentation somewhere of what games they do and don't have; that would make it much easier for someone else to go in and resell the games. As someone who used to regularly parse through and sell 100+ cart lots every week or so, someone could whittle a collection of that size down in a few months or half a year, without much difficulty . Once you get to the mid thousands in quantities though, one runs into other problems such as finding room to even sort the damn stuff, turning it into a nightmare to try to get rid of it. That's all I was saying.

  7. Hey everyone, not sure where to post this so mods feel free to move to another section if necessary.

Anyways, I'm looking for someone who is willing to design up a few custom Famicom PCBs for me, which I can then get printed off at PCBway or some similar service. I'll gladly pay money or compensate for this service in some way, so please get in touch if you can (or you know someone who would be willing to) help out.

    Thanks!

Well...when they take inspiration, they really take inspiration, don't they? But hey, I'm sold. Classic Castlevania is one of my "anytime, anywhere" game series and many modern devs have done great things with it, like the Bloodstained games. Here's hoping this one turns out as good as it looks.

Bloodstained is a Castlevania-inspired game, not a true Castlevania game. So modern devs made a Castlevania-inspired game, but that's it, they haven't "done great things" with the series regarding that ss.

  9. In terms of community lore and early repro / homebrew stuff, these will have value. People are quick to dismiss it now but hopefully if @Ferris Bueller ever writes a book about early NES homebrew / repro history, then other people will realize the significance.

For those as myself lucky enough to see the growth of this stuff from the start, those were exciting times. And the progressions of homebrew and repro were quite parallel for awhile.

We have discussed this for years, largely because you self-insert into half the threads on the site and turn them into discussing it. In all these years, I've yet to see one of these "phenomenal" games; can you point me to one, please?

I could do so, but I don't want to disrespect OptOut's thread. One initial comment of mine, which required no responses, has suddenly turned into an unnecessary back and forth.

People who could read Chinese objectively reviewed it as a poor showing. Which is par for the course with Chinese bootlegs, so colour me unsurprised.

Give me an effing break, western kids review Chinese games for YT subs and likes review the games as garbage. We've discussed this for years, and a large portion of the games coming out of Taiwan (and later China) were phenomenal.

A ton of work went into the final release of the ROM hack of Pokemon. Lugia2009 stood more on the shoulders of giants than stole their work and claimed it was theirs. Someone made a huge list of the changes made. Apparently beat the game too. And now I think my game didn't break but it was actually that the routes I thought I had to take didn't exist.

    https://smashboards.com/threads/pokemon-yellow-nes.432925/

A ton of work went into the original demake release too, though, though people like to conveniently ignore that fact.

Now back to the N64 brew.

If "Chineseness" translates to "shitty-ness" lol. The original FF7 "demake" by ShenZhen Nanjing Technology sucked ass, and a dude took like 4 years using it as a base for making an actually decent version of the game.

It's kinda funny to point the finger at people doing a hack of a game for which the original creators really had no right to make in the first place.

Well yeah the game would suck ass if you couldn't read Chinese.

So stealing someone else's work is okay, if it's a work that the other guy didn't have rights to? Leisure Suit Larry NES port hack, anyone?

Edit: Oh and hacked it so it couldn't be completed, that sounds like an upgrade.

Amusing enough, some time are 2016/17 I posted a question on NA asking if anyone had ever played the Final Fantasy VII demake, because I was trying to beat on a homebrew copy I’d purchased.

I pretty much got the same general response.

A couple years before that, I played the Pokemon yellow demake and it broke like 15 hours into the game and found out no one actually played the game last the 5th gym at the time lol I still have the game and might give it another shot one day but what a bummer.

Well these were hacks of Chinese -made games, scrubbed of their Chineseness and then profited on greatly by repro folks.

  15. I meant to post this a week or two back by I got a really fun package from @Masterofzelda. In the main thread Master said he missed the sign up date so I messaged him privately about doing a SS.

This was a really amazing present! I'm not generally a popcorn guy, but the Fisher's Popcorn is some of the best I've ever had! I ate about a 1/3 of the bag in one sitting, and want to try to recreate it or do by own popcorn inspired by that using some of the Old Bay seasoning that was sent. I'm going to have fun cooking with that, too, and introducing it to some of my local friends. Growing up in south, central PA, it's a spice we often had at home.

I was really surprised by those Ninja Turtles snacks. My Japanese friend was curious so we busted them out during Netflix night. The pizza ones were our favorite of the two, but the green apple marshmallow ones were pretty good too. Very unique, never had these before.

I'm really excited to try the Zeke's coffee that Matthew sent, it smells really, really good. Enough about the food though, there's some gaming goodies in here too!

First off is a light-up tree topper for my Christmas tree, which is shaped like the Triforce! This is really cool and I might even set it up in my game room for the non Christmas season.

Then there are some tanooki items! A Tanooki Mario toy from the Mario movie and an Animal Crossing plush Tanooki.

Thanks so much @Masterofzelda for your generosity, I hope you had a great holiday season!

I can draw the assumption based on your reply that you do not have kids thus your respect for their views wouldn’t align with mine…… you don’t have the experience.

This wasn't directed at me, but as an educator at a pre-school and primary school for over a decade, the prerequisite of having kids or not means nothing on viewpoint regarding this matter. I don't have kids, but I'd even venture a guess that I even understand the viewpoints of some of my students better than their parents do - arrogant to say this, yes, but then again, there's a reason why there is that stereotype about Asian parents not being close to their children, something that is luckily changing somewhat with the younger generations. Now if we were discussing parenting techniques, that would be a whole other matter entirely, something that I'll just keep my mouth shut about. 😉

That being said, I do agree with you and respect the views of my students, even if I personally disagree with their thoughts.

I don't buy into this at all actually. As an individual I possess the ability to recognize qualities in games even if I dislike them. I don't like sim racers, sports titles, I'm not really into GTA, Assassins Creed, etc, but this is not my judgement to them as being bad games. I also don't prescribe to the idea that the opinions of young children hold real merit to actual quality, as they are literally defined by their low standards in marketing. A game like say, Style Savvy may be a great game that is designed for girls, there may exist a great Barbie game just as there do exist good Spongebob games..

Age however usually brings wisdom, almost all adults can likely define things they loved as children, but realize are not good as adults, even if they carry a special nostalgia for them. My 6 year old niece may not be thrilled by the standard in which I collected as a now nearly 40 year old man, but I don't hold her taste as equally respectable judgement because she has at least another decade or more to go before her sense of taste and understanding of things is likely to be developed.

I don't respect people's taste in music if they don't play any instruments, and don't like opera music, jazz, and traditional Chinese instrumentals with the erhu and pipa. I personally believe that those who don't fulfill these prerequisites know nothing on music and therefore their taste, judgement, and perspectives are not on the same level or nearly as respectable as mine. A bit arrogant, is it not?

The real issue at hand is that as we get older, we tend to move away from ourselves and become sheep, deciding what is good based on what people tell us is "good". We are afraid of what the neighbors might say, or what others think. We are even afraid to admit to ourselves things that we like (guilty pleasures with movies, music, etc for example) due to society or other expectations, even our own. Kids, on the other hand, are still being groomed and shaped by the clutches of society. Some examples.

Some of my students once (12 - 13) had brought in some Pokemon cards once. It was a mix of Chinese (bootleg) and Japanese cards, nothing funky about the boots, just that they were translated into Chinese. My students all swore that the Japanese ones were better, despite not being able to understand the text. The printing was more or less the same. Because they were "real", though, and cost more, it somehow made them better.

I've drank plenty of expensive coffee and wine before, but I've also had cheap stuff. There's a time and a place for both, and to a non-connoisseur, your opinion on the quality of the wine would have little value; however, if you made a statement such as "I prefer this (cheaper) bottle because I like the name, and it comes with a screw top so it's more convenient to drink", it would be a totally valid opinion in my mind.

Younger children are going to still be developing their eye-hand coordination, reading skills, strength, etc. Pair this with shortened attention spans (though with today's generation of screen teens, maybe it's now equal haha), and you need a game that fits into such parameters, which by default isn't going to be very enjoyable for adults. To put it another way, edutainment sort of fits into a similar situation - Mario Teaches Typing is fun for what it is, but I wouldn't just bust it out for the sake of playing it, unless it was some drunken party contest antics or something along that line.

It's the same reason that reading children's books when learning a foreign language is tedious - I want to be reading about sex and violence and drugs, rather than Spot running in the sunshine with flowers and happiness. It doesn't mean that the others are poor or crap or that you have a more refined taste, rather as @O.G. CIB stated, everyone is just going to have different preferences based on their own tastes, all of which hold merit and are equally as valuable.
