Oh don’t be so cantankerous.  You were a new guy once too you know.  When someone is new they are going to have no idea where to look or what is a reliable source of information.  You also have to take into account that someone with no background in game collecting is not going to even consider that their question or topic is going to have already been discussed into the ground.

Strongly disagree about most of this. I got dunked on plenty of times, but that was for acting like an idiotic teenager rather than for being a new guy. Then again, we were pioneers too, so we were literally doing the leg work to collect and piece together the information that is now available. 😛

I guess that's my issue on the whole thing: take ten seconds to do an ebay search before asking the value of something, do a Google search and read about how to do a battery replacement, etc. So much of the information is now out there and readily available via a quick search, so at least put in a little effort before asking someone else to do your homework for you. Such effort makes people see that you may be new, but at least you want to learn a bit about whatever.

Edit: or if you're a guy who brings something new to the table with your first post, you're also going to avoid the dunking.

I personally will choose to be more patient if the issue is a lack of knowledge and experience.  If it is a *behavior* issue then I have less patience.

But, the beauty of life is that we can all handle things differently and how we see fit and how we want to handle.

We should not be quick to fault a person for seemingly not having patience, when they could simply just be spent by now, whilst you're fresh, for whatever reason.

That said, I do agree with you that it is the beauty of life when we are so allowed to have the ability and option of choice.

I get that to a degree, but I guess I prefer to deal with that scenario in a different way - and it's pretty easy to do so without being rude, hateful, and belittling others.

It's pretty easy to ignore someone if it doesn't seem like a conversation is going to be constructive.  Or, alternatively, it's easy to have a blunt conversation without being overly hostile.

For example, if some new person joins a community and they are overly enthusiastic but just very ignorant of the norms, there are ways to deal with that without being super negative.

I've personally had the experience of trying to join a community, not knowing much about things, but with a genuine interest to learn, and have been completely overwhelmed with negativity to the point of leaving - that's not really fun for anyone to deal with and in my experience, I don't feel I was an idiot but I was certainly ignorant of the norms there.

Then I've joined other places where I didn't really know much, but people were very eager to help me learn and welcome me.

Now, if someone is new and is just being absolutely belligerent, obstinate, and negative, that's an entirely different thing than what I'm talking about really.

While I do agree with your spirit here, this sort of utopian environment is impossible to achieve, especially when one considers such factors as native language / culture, attitude, personality type, and even the day jobs of other members. Anyone that has done a stint of retail surely knows what I'm talking about, i.e. when the customer can't even help themselves at all...and I'm not talking about elderly people or children, either.

Simply put, if you've been dealing with that sort of behavior all day, you likely don't want to be dealing with it in your free time as well.

On the other hand, folks who are new or inexperienced don't have to be grating either, but it all comes down to attitude, likeability, etc. Go do some research first, don't act like you're an expert or have some crazy hot take when you don't or aren't, etc. It goes a long way.

As it relates again to the 'dunking on newbie's' concept and related issues, I guess I just don't understand the value and joy some people get in putting other people down and belittling them.  Bad *behavior* is one thing, but sometimes I see hate and vitriol stemming from just legitimately different opinions about something where there is no right or wrong.

I don't think it's necessarily a matter of people having fun dunking noobs, rather it's a matter of people being sick of dealing with idiots, though sadly we live in an age where everyone prefers to have someone take them by the hand rather than do some research, take a look around, explore, and then ask.

  5. I don't particularly dunk on newcomers, and I am always trying to be encouraging towards people online or IRL; however, I feel it all comes down to attitude of the newcomers at the end of the day.

To put it into perspective a bit, we've all been in situations in the workplace, I am sure, where a new hire is brought on board (or perhaps we were the new hire). Some people you can just instantly connect with, others you instantly dislike for one reason or another. Some folks you jibe with, others you don't, and there's nothing wrong with that. No need to be rude, but no need to be insincere with pleasantries either.

    Oh sick!

I've always wondered what it would've been like to be a graphics artist in the 8-bit / 16-bit era. Like - how much programming knowledge did they need, and what compromises did they have to make for system limitations and stuff?

    [T-Pac]

Cool! I'll send you a message about it this weekend. Also about another artist I know, who was involved in a totally different side of the industry.

So I was talking to one of my supervisors at work yesterday, and apparently her first job in the animation industry was doing cleanup on Aladdin's idle-cycle in the Genesis game...

I've been working with her for 2 years and I'm just learning this NOW!!?? Lost my mind a bit haha.

    [T-Pac]

    That's awesome 😎

On a similar note, I'm friends of the guy who did the graphics for Aladdin on Famicom.

A couple of months back I ran into a local author at Barnes & Noble, promoting his new book.  He was wearing Stephen King and Clive Barker schwag, so we started up a conversation about all things horror.  I ended up buying his book, a horror anthology, and got him to sign it.  Figured I'd support him, and I'm a sucker for short story collections.  The next day he did a promotion at my friend's book store, which was also pretty cool.

Finally cracked it open, and OH MY FUCKING GOD, it is the most unreadable shit I've ever come across in my life.  Clearly the only editor he had was his wife or girlfriend.  And he's read a lot of books, but I guess he never actually gleaned any writing tips from any of them.  And the publisher?  Googled 'em, and they're just some bullshit vanity shop that dupes talentless hacks into paying them money.

I feel bad too, cause this dude is all about this thing.  He really thought that he had "made it" and that he was gonna enter the pantheon of great writers.

Here is a sample.  This is basically every page.

Could you please tell me the name of this book or help me obtain a copy? I'd love to check it out.

This ought to be more interesting. Obviously Zelda comes to mind first. However, Dragon Quest III's subtitle in Japanese is "And, into the Legend..." We all know how much DQ3 dominates these polls, so I actually expect it to win here. I'll pick Castlevania III (Akumajou Densetsu) for third.

    Ooohhhh....a densetsu. 🙂

i remember someone (tsr / Kevin maybe?) writing a "guide" to Japanese for gaijin and densetsu was one of the words on the list. The guide was quite hilarious though.

  10. I've got quite a bit that I haven't posted, as I've just been really busy over the past few months with family visiting in February, and now this March I'm involved with ByteOff.

Anyways, here are a few fun finds.

The first is a boxed Family Fun Creator Famiclone done by Bit Corp. For those of you from the DP days, you likely know Bit Corp, as they had been creating games and machines since the Atari era, a pioneer of the trade, when it comes to Taiwanese manufacturers. As such, I was really happy to receive this machine. The box is probably a B, condition wise, IMO. There's some wear but for this kind of product, it's in excellent condition.

On a different note, I believe I have one or two of these loose (machine only with controllers) if anyone is interested. Hit me up here if you want one, as they'll be going on the sale pile. Early and rare.

Regarding the cartridges, Great Tank is a bootleg; however, the PCB is legit. This was definitely a behind the scenes jobbie, to move stock or promote a brand to those who couldn't afford it.

Then there are the two old boots, Whirlwind Manu and NTG F1 Race. Lecker schmecker, wow. Makes me geil. We also can't forget SMB, I have quite a large SMB bootleg collection. When I find bootleg SMB cartridges, I always keep them. This is one of the "key" titles imo, eventually they will be worth more.

Hybrid's collection is great!  It's a really good example of a more niche interest.  I think a lot of the different interests and niche / less common paths, make everything much more interesting.  If all of us just collected a set of NES games and nothing else, it wouldn't be anywhere near as fun and interesting to talk about collecting, gaming, etc.  So when different people have different goals and different collections to talk about, it makes everything better, more interesting, and varied.

So why do you feel sick about the concept of some people being pioneers and others being followers? No one said one is better than the other, it's just a personality trait. But your post to be honest made me feel sick in my stomach to read.

Saw that this is on the list for the NES weekly contest this year and wanted to grab a physical copy. The going rates on eBay seem a bit high so I was hoping people could chime in and speak on if they thought $600-$700 USD was a good rate. Also, if anyone has a legit one they’d like to part with I’m always down to deal. Or if @fcgamer or @Tanookiknow of one for sale local to them. eBay filtering didn’t really help me out for sold listings as it seems most people aren’t buying these and pricing charting seems to think the current listings are way overpriced.

    Anyway, all thoughts appreciated!

Edit: Or is it stylized as Summer Carnival 92: Recca? 🤔

This is one of those carts that if I were searching for it now, I'd probably just grab a repro and be done. There's just too many convincing fakes and the price has gotten quite pricey.

I got mine maybe eight or nine years ago from a trusted source. I can't remember what I paid, likely just a few hundred. The bootleg carts from back in the day are also getting expensive, which I'd price at $50, though South American guys and Central Europe guys would place at $180 or more.
