17 - Green Hockey Player from Ice Hockey [Nintendo Entertainment System - 1988]

@Kguillemette - good call on this one! I'm definitely not a sports guy, but those sprites all looked fun. I gravitated to the green one since I thought I could play-up his squat shape.

If you still have room and are looking for more sprites, do one from tecmo super bowl 🤣.  I would find a sprite, but on phone and at work!

also, great job on this one as usual!

  2. Initial 4 plus unlock and beat campaigner @Splain  That sounds like a good ruleset.  Let me show you which one and how many missions.

31 missions in total, each has a blue dot on them.

    image.png.c624c91ab2e171fc9eed6206b2655a48.png

That to me, seems long enough to call it a completion.  I think he literally has every mission/trial on the board and everything after that just repeats.  In fact, I never seen the upper group until him.  so the picture at the top right and the 7 missions on the top right as well as the 4 directly to his left.

If everyone agrees, I think that right there is probably the completion for the game without unlocking everything in game.

So there are 4 to begin with? And you're saying that anything past 4+2 is repeated/reused content?

I'm really not trying to be a jerk with this, but we have to pick something that's tied to the game itself. Since there's no cut-and-dry ending, we have to do either 100% or something kinda arbitrary, so some possibilities are:

    - Finish the trials with 1 character
    - Finish the trials with all initial characters
    - Do the trials until there's nothing new to see (essentially "finish one loop")
    - Do trials until all of a certain thing is unlocked
    - Do all the trials

I'm not the pope either, if everyone agrees on something, then we'll use it.

(As a general rule, I understand that 100% isn't generally required, but there are plenty of games on the list whose requirement also happens to be 100%, and we don't deliberately scale it back for the sake of NOT being 100%. I'm not saying this applies to Rage Wars.)

Hmmmm........Let me see who it was that took the longest, i'll let you know as i search my vod, one min.

  4. Alright @Splain I beat another dude tonight, that makes 7 of a possible 17 i think is the magic number.  This is what the map looked like for the trials and I got the minigun and freeze gun and a bunch of other minigame unlocks or something to that effect.

    image.png.83b034d3402e7c53e743440e1a4be5a4.png

That is 22 missions beaten with 1 character at just over 90 mins.  At this point, im just gonna 100% the game if I keep going.  I would say maybe a good rule is play till you can't stand it anymore, which was about 5 hours ago in total for the playthrough I have done 🤣.  But in all seriousness, maybe beat the game with the first 4 plus 2 others of your choice?

I consider this game beaten.  The guy i did prior to this had a whole other section above the top right, which was probably a total of 30 missions altogether.  So.......Mark it off if you would, Im done, if you don't count this, someone else can have a go, its just so repetitive, i prolly killed 10 chickens, aka monkeys, captured 7 flags, pulled all the kills for my team matches, in the neighborhood of 40, and killed so many randos myself in a free for all match it was unreal.  It is kinda growing on me as i unlock things, but really, like I said, at this point, I'm on my path to 100%'ing the game.

See here's the thing.  I might try this and I should at least once, but I've bought various repairs and I really, really don't like being that guy who complains because things aren't perfect but there's just something about the OG analog, probably because of it's problems, that just can't be fixed.  I've even swapped out a Hori I had (which people have loved for decades) and it wasn't quite right and I even bought one of those analogs that was from a GC Controller.  The throw (I think that's the term) isn't quite as large due to the shape and it's usable but not the same.

What muscle memory I have is sensitive.  I tend to do better on the controls that I have that are only-slightly worn out.  Opty's suggestion is probably best for me if I take the time, effort and money to do it.  If I can get 3-4 near new controllers from Japan, I'd be set for a while.  At least if I wear those out, I'll be doing it and will adjust as the controllers are wearing down.  But I can't explain it.  It's like I have it locked in my brain of what a fresh controller feels like since I had a lot of them as a kid, and there are some nice fixes but... none of them feel right.

And to be clear, the more I think about it, I do blame Nintendo. Those analogs were less than perfect, so I kind of learned to finesse their wonkiness and now all I want is perfect wonkiness to go with my Watermelon N64. Lol.

dude, order 4, if u don't like them sell them to me.  I can always use spares.  consider this a money back guarantee.  all u would be out is ur time!  I get it I hate the brawler as the sensitivity is way too high on the joystick, these just feel right.

How much are they, usually each?  I looked them up a while ago and, with shipping, they were a bit out of my price point.  Still, you're probably right and I should probably save up for that.  It really isn't a bad suggestion.

don't buy dirty ole Japanese controllers, just rebuild your own!  literally 10 bux for everything I think is what I spent to rebuild 4 controllers.

Here's the thing... this is a case where I 100% prefer OG... but I don't want to drop, what, $200-300 to get an original controller, fresh and new, so that it's not worn out.  I'm sure really good N64 controllers are out there, but they are devices I will not buy unless I can test them because most are worn out.  I also know that no one (last I checked) has seemed to crack that perfect N64 analog stick that I'm aware of.

But if there was any company that I'd have faith in that might get close to it, it'd be Analogue.  Of course, they are best at FPGA/software programming so who knows if that would be true or not.  But maybe.... I'd still buy 4x of those things and if they ended up not feeling right, I'd just sell them.  I'm sure there will be demand.

dude, kitsch bent, I think spelling, has great gears, bowls and sticks, look them up, like less than a dollar apiece and guess what, my worn out n64 controller is brand new after me of all people rebuilt it!!!!!  no need to buy like new/new controllers when u can just replace worn out parts with basically oem, ok the sticks aren't perfect, but @drxandy says old stick are still fine, so just replace the guts and good as new.

If they get this right, I am 100% doxing @Jeevan again. 😍

    Let's go. 😎

my only reason for getting this would be the pal ability.  if the price is released, let me know and u can buy 2 and I'll pay u back minus shipping to Taiwan!  also note, please make sure u have my right address before you do this.

Eh... I feel like I recall seeing some shade being thrown around here before but the more I think about it, that might have been about the limited supply of the original NT (or whatever the NES version is called) and just how expensive it was at launch.

Yeah, I love original hardware and I'll prefer it 95% of the time with only a few exceptions.  But with that said, consistency and reliability is starting to be a big win for me.  It looks like the controller is going for the brawler layout and, I mean... I hate to see that but I'm not offended.  I wish they'd make two controller options, but that would just be too expensive.

If Analogue made an N64 FPGA device with an N64 controller of the same quality, then I'd definitely be in.  I'll also probably keep this plugged into a CRT but I also like the option of taking it upstairs for family game nights and having the ability to plug it straight into the HDTV and not have to worry about those absolutely wretched interlacing artifacts.

brawler sucks, og t Rex all the way!!!!  do they have ports for og?

16 - Octopus from Parodius Da [Nintendo Famicom - 1990]

@Jeevan - the Octopus is my go-to character in Parodius, too!

Also - this is officially the HALFWAY POINT OF INK-TOBER! Woohoo!

love the visor and the goofiness of his face.  I love the ripple shot with all options, seems to cover the screen for a shmup scrub like me!  Thanks for the rendition!

Seems a bit extreme to have to play the game over and over. It’s not 100% clear the N64 library just beat the game. Just my 2c.

I need to get back into Bomberman I’ve been way too slack.

kinda my thinking, I will verify as much as possible and come up with a list that will hopefully be satisfactory of characters to beat it with to get a full sense of the game.

They max out at a certain point, you may already have reached the max number of trials per character. It's the first few you only have a couple of trials, and then they get more until at a certain point they all have the same number, like 15 maybe? I can't really remember it's been a long time!

well, maybe 15 required, but if u are trying to get all the extra lives etc. I know I did a metric shit ton on my last playthrough lol.  maybe it was just my imagination but damn!!!!!

  12. Just now, OptOut said:

Each character has a different number of trials, and different trials to beat, and various options and win conditions etc. change. So, none of the character careers are identical, but yeah, it's a lot of repetitive content.

I finished the whole thing because I found it fun, and I enjoyed the challenge and figuring out various battle strategies, etc. I wouldn't have felt I'd gotten the most out of the game if I HADN'T completed all the trials.

I don't wanna influence any decision on how a game should or shouldn't be completed in the thread here tho, especially as I am largely just a spectator this year. But, I'm just relating my own experience of the game.

I mean that is fair, and I know it's about figuring out the best way to beat each trial with the weapon set and the character, ffs, I thought I was boned with the raptor 🤣, no weapons......but your input IS appreciated and valued.  I just don't wanna sell the end point and find out later I was wrong.  I wonder how many stages in total there actually are as the last character I used had something in the 20 or 30 mission range.  I will play another character and do some more research to see if I am missing anything in particular on levels.  if not, then I think we can figure out a good stopping point imo.

We could choose the raptor playthrough as an arbitrary endpoint.

From what I've seen on stream that seemed to have the most unique playstyle and you'd have to beat it with several other characters to unlock it. Plus it'd be done 😇

My only problem with the raptor endpoint is you get it after playing turoks campaign, which is the 1st one most people will go for, so I think maybe 5 or 6 clears would be a good stopping point because the last character I played was like 20 missions or something, encompassing the majority, if not, all of the levels.

I know, and I don't want to be a jerk but I don't want to just mark it off, we've all had to do some crazy tine sinks this year lol. If it really is just looped/repeated content then we don't have to require it, but we'd need to know where the looping starts.

@OptOut when you beat Rage Wars did you do every trial with every character?

I mean, as far as I can tell it basically loops all stages, just ramps up the difficulty.  @OptOut can correct me if I'm wrong, and I'm sure he will.  you get upgrades along the way, but if u watch any long play of it, or any gameplay like mine, @ikk can attest to the fact that I have played the same capture the flag stage at 3, 5, 7 captures and its literally the same stage.  I would say maybe 5 of the potential 14 characters but let me play a bit more and see what is up with it.  I'm pretty sure it's just same stages with different number of kills/flag captures.

I've beat Turok Rage Wars before, a couple years back. I'd say it's possibly the best Turok game of all, although as it's death match only it's a little too limited to definitively state that.

It does take a while to unlock all the characters and play through all their various trials, but all the trials are SLIGHTLY different so you haven't really seen everything in the game till you've done them all.

That's the way I felt playing it anyway, but then again a lot of the content in each character's trials ARE repeated content, so I don't know if you wanna do them all.

exactly, its a bunch of repeat........so imo its done, but i will refer to you and @Splain to hash it out.  I can beat some more if u all want, but i dont know how much more of the same shit i can take, just harder.......... 🤣

@Jeevan I've been looking at it, and there's definitely no like, 1-player Story mode, but it looks like there are 1-player Trials for... every character? Tell me if this is right, it seems you can do the trials and unlock characters as you go, then do those new trials as you unlock them. Looking on YouTube, even when you unlock every character and do every trial, it still just dumps you back to the character select screen, no ending at all. There are things to unlock, does it make sense to do something like Unlock Every Character? How are they unlocked? How many characters are there to begin with? I'm asking you all this because you know this game way more than I do.

Unrelated, I've run into a bug when emulating Iggy's Reckin Balls, and from Googling, it looks like it's universal across emulators with verified clean rom dumps. This is the same thing that happened with Blues Brothers, it's not emulatable. So I'm gonna call dibs on Iggy's Reckin Balls and find a real-life copy to play.

i dont know how many characters there are, but it is a pain in the ass 😆.  I guess if u require to unlock every character i can, but i dont know that i can beat at least one of the dudes i have im not sure if there are 14 or more characters, but either way it really is a ball ache when you only have 2 or 3 lives for something that requires 4 or 5 lol.  i would say it would be complete, but u are the n64 guru/god here.........
