@Fleck586 You can get them at Ikea (also online ikea). They are part of the Billy line up of shelves i think. They aren't as deep as a regular billy though. They do make like a double wide one or about half Billy size one as well. I have one of those in the living room/movie area where i did the same sorta corner thing.

Here you go, found some links:

I've been eying that type of Billy setup with the corner shelf since '08 or so. Not for games, but for books. Neat to see someone actually do it.

... ~$1000 is usually the price I see tossed around for 2008.

Yeah, that's pretty typical. I haven't seen one sell for less than that since 2015, but I also don't think a lot of people are going to want to let it go for less; it's easier just to hang onto it. If a couple hit public auction we'd have a better gauge, but they rarely do.

  3. Prices have come way down from what they were in say 2015. There are still folks that think they're worth more (or folks who want to sell them for more), but everything except '08 can be had for a somewhat reasonable price. The last '09 I saw sell publicly went for like $350. I want to say the last 2010 was $150 or so? I haven't been keeping track too much, but if you're not buying this time of year they're not too bad.

SQUEEEEEEEEEEEEE!  ...ahem...  Anyway...do you know if he's having to do it all by hand or if he's managed to put together some sort of AGI/SCI converter/interpreter?  I'd guess the former, but it would be fantastic if he figured out a way to do the latter.  I suppose the latter is less likely, though, as that might put him into hot water versus doing a look-alike.  Excited, regardless of how it's executed!

From what he's said, all by hand, with the help of some tools. You'd have to ask him for the exact process though (and if you do, tell him to get on VGS while you're at it).

Thanks guys!  I've gotten one PM so far, fingers crossed I can make a deal and finally get to check this out!  Fingers really crossed the KHan decides to port over some of the other Sierra classics, as I'd be over the moon to play some Space Quest, King's Quest, etc. on the NES!

He's working on King's Quest at the moment!

Super Mario Land was such a great original Mario game.  I remember being very impressed with it for a portable title.

I remember strongly disliking it, but you're better at games than I am 😛 . I never even made it far enough to see the submarine.

This reminds me of all those NES platformers that switch to a 'flying/shooting' section right at the final stage or final boss (Kirby's Adventure, Kid Icarus, Jackie Chan's Action Kung Fu).

It definitely adds something special to the end of a game, but it always felt counter-intuitive. You spend so much time mastering the mechanics of a game just to get to the end and find out those skills don't translate to the final boss. The game throws something completely new at you instead of testing what you learned along the way.

Can anyone think of some other games that switch from platforming to flying right at the end?

Micro Mages does the same thing as Kirby at the very end. The game is a forced vertical scroller, so other than doing something like what Lizard does for the frog boss, it seemed like it fit well.

Another game that changes the style of play for the end boss, though not to a flying segment, if Quest Forge. The game is somewhat rogue-like in terms of combat, and I spent most of the game wondering how that was going to work come the end since that didn't seem like it would fit for a one-on-one battle. Sure enough, it switched to more of a Zelda-like gameplay type.

The best games are the NES 3D Classics.  The main reason I bought the system.   It's a shame they quit putting them out after the first year or so.

This might be the first that I'm hearing of these. I'll have to give them a look.

  9. I learned from this thread that Air Wolf has two modes, nuts! Like the Guardian Legend, that is a game that I would have indefinitely passed by if the depth to it hadn't been pointed out. Ginga Denshou is one for the FDS that I always forget about (vertical shooter mixed with action-adventure), but it is not really enjoyable like The Guardian Legend. Probably why I forget about it.

  10. Translation patches are great, but there always seems to be one more game that I'm looking forward to seeing translated. I probably would have lost interest in the older libraries years ago, but with patches the amount of games out there keeps them alive and well. So what all have you been keeping an eye out for, whether for months or years?

Personally, I'm patiently waiting for Star Ocean" Blue Sphere. From what I have played it looks great. Ghideon Zi is working on it, and a French one was released last year. Hanjuku Hero is another one that I'd like to see, being a Squaresoft fan, but it has translation issues. In my own attempts to hack it and play around with changing a few things, I can say that it also has some programming challenges as well.

What's a Starkeeper and why is it so special?

Couldn't disagree more with @arch_8ngel's evaluation of the gameplay. It is one of the most solid homebrews in that regard, particularly if you like arcade styled games. Art and music are top notch as well. It can be a bit difficult, but it is relatively fair.

It was able to be sold outside of China, he just had some hiccups on launch day.

Production was high as far as limited releases go (over 100), but the desirability is there due to gameplay.

  12. This is a topic that has been long discussed among some of us, but it's nice to see some new folks champion it. Finding the right combination of games is key, since the challenges should differ like they did with the NWC/HBWC/etc. For example, is the challenge difficulty, randomness, time-based, skill mixed with chance, ,high score, etc.

Spook-o'-tron doesn't work due to the dual controller (alas!). The Incident is another that is tough since it lacks a random component. Even if it was time based it would be too easy to quickly master it. If a random set of puzzles were used then there are other difficulties.

Name a game, give the challenge, section off an area of it for further study (level 2, or X mini-game).

This year would be a great year for it!
