Hey that was my first try in six years, no practice! There's plenty of room for improvement.

Run! But in all seriousness it's just nice to see people playing the game (whether they like it or not!). It's even gotten me to replay it, and I haven't touched it in six years or so.
As you noticed, the game is initially harder than Robotron. Instead of the levels being randomly generated, however, they are all planned out, and every single one can be beaten on one life (both in the demo and the full game). That was the base stipulation for inclusion. Practice makes perfect, but no more pro-tips from me !- 1

Do you still have the Zelda vinyl?
Yep! It's somewhere around here...

Thanks to everyone who has backed the project or helped spread the word about it. Derek is a great guy and an amazing programmer, and it has been our great pleasure to help get Trophy into production. If you have any questions about the release, feel free to send @IBtiM or I a PM, tweet, KS message, or postal letter!

Granted, sure, but my example solves that issue - more info is always better. The guy looking for "handcrafted" will see it right beside the game. The guy who wants to avoid NESMaker games for one reason or another will see "NESMaker" beside those games and move on.
You're still not seeing that there are a myriad of small tools and diversity, and a division between those and one large, end all be all tool

Thank you for continuing this!

If you're going to add such distinction, for interests' sake, I'd say let's toss on the tools used for as many games as possible. Is it not interesting to know that UserX made GameY with C# instead of straight Assembly (or whatever)? Let's consider NESMaker what it is - a tool. You're not making a NESMaker game, you're making a game using NESMaker; the verbiage here is important I think. Rather than putting baby in a corner cuz he used a tool, why not go the other way and simply say we want to have as much info on as many games as possible available and up for discussion?
Looking at the list and JUST having "NESMaker" next to some games while the rest are barren of details is actually I think doing the OTHER games a disservice. Let's get something like this going:
-
Doug's Cool Game
- NESMaker
- Visual Studio Code
- Mesen
- Some audio engine or something
-
SoleGoose's Game Jam
- Sublime Text Editor
- Assembly
-
gauauu's GBA Extravaganza
- VIM
- Literally just Basic
If we're all working with hand tools and another group is using a high tech CNC mill, there's a difference. Those that cannot see the difference between one tool and any tool aren't going to see a difference here. If I'm in the market for handcrafted wood items, I'm going to want to know the difference.

As for Mugi's game, we have hacks that have been completely recoded. At the end of the day, they are still hacks, it's no different (not calling it a hack either, before that gets taken out of context). Pyronaut anyone?

Why would you?
Why would you not? We clarify things all of the time on the forums in order to know what we're talking about. Is that game sealed, or a reseal? Did you use save states, or did you beat it legit? Is Super Mario Bros. a "super Nintendo" game, or a "Super" Nintendo game. Some don't care, others do. Is that game a hack, or was it programmed from scratch? NESMaker questions are similar.

New thread is over yonder, post comments and discussion there, for those that want to have them. In terms of @Scrobins list, he manages it so he can run it as he likes. If you feel the need to start a different list, please feel free to do so.

Conversation goes here, for those that want to partake.

Oddly enough, Mystic Quest was one of my prime examples when designing screen layouts a few months back. I played it as a kid, thought it sucked, and then didn't play it again until last August. I had a blast, which was surprising, and the cleanness of the menus was a big take away from it.

Mugi has a valid point concerning Nesmaker for a couple of reasons, anyone attracted to Nesmaker due to what Dimension Shift is able to showcase would be disappointed since all of the default code base has been gutted, optimized and replaced from the ground up. So it would be a disservice for new people coming to Nesmaker fresh.
...
The problem is that people want to turn the NESMaker distinction into a qualitative judgment, arguing from the subjective ends and not the objective means. Keep it to the facts and let people make their own calls. That is not an anti-NESMaker position either, although most assume it is.
I'm not going to argue the point much, it's Scrobin's thread and he can do with it what he wants (which everyone should respect), but a list like this is only as valuable as the information it provides. Purposefully excluding information that is helpful to some, is not helpful unless we know that up front or throughout.
-
The only thing that Joe G. has convinced me of is that something either uses NESMaker or it doesn't. That's enough of a distinction in my book. Any dev knows the difference between using a game creation tool like NESMaker and writing code from scratch. There are not many who are blind to the difference. If the proponents of NESMaker, those that cannot see a difference between hacks and homebrews, and a few scattered others want to either not see a distinction or actively work to erase it for their own ends, then that's their problem.
-
A distinction that is not helpful to you doesn't make it unhelpful to others.

Great OP, it'll take a while to write a response that touches the level of description and reflection. Seeing Black Belt on there forces me to re-think things too! Those defining, but largely forgotten games, hmm...
-
If creators are going to be able to remove associations between their work and NESMaker, a separate category denoting that would be helpful (*Made with NESMaker but label removed at the request of the creator). The list is about information, not judgment calls, and having basic information is helpful. Otherwise, there is not much value in the list as information. One still has to look into any and every project to figure out what it is, if facts are being omitted.
Arguing that something is made with NESMaker but not made with NESMaker is about as useful as someone calling a hack anything other than a hack. Pyronaut is amazing, but it's still a hack, whether or not Optomon would care to see it otherwise (and he wouldn't, from what I can tell).
Give people information and let them decide what to do with it, don't obscure it.

Don't use circular menus like Secret of Mana.
Oh no! Why is that?
And I did mean more in terms of content, but any comments about layout and formatting are welcome as well.

Minit! Played through the first quest twice trying to get 100%. Looked up one puzzle (honestly never would have gotten it otherwise, except by accident), but left the game incomplete at 90% the second time. I'll get a bit more life out of it by leaving that 10% mystery to re-explore in a few months.

A lot of options are determined by gameplay, but on the whole, which gameplay options do you find to be preferred when playing a game? Which make the experience more enjoyable, and which are rarely touched? Here are some SNES examples that might help refresh the old memory, but feel free to draw from more current gameplay experiences. My experiences are Square biased, so help me out if I'm overlooking something. I'm specifically looking for things that can be done on the NES or SNES, and things that would make sense in a 2D pixel world, so an option like turning off voice acting or camera rotation are kind of outside of the topic. Thanks!

Anybody play that Epic Mickey game? Ran across some screenshots and it was graphically pleasing at least.
Ha, went to find a 3DS game to play and found it already on the shelf! Must have picked it up at a Black Friday sale or something since it is sealed/new.

Had 9" or so late last week. It melted some, and then snowed another 3-4". It's supposed to get up to the high 30s this coming weekend, which means that I'll have a chance to get the lawn chairs and tiki torches out of the yard. We really weren't expecting it to hit so early, hahaha.

Man it's nice to see you again. I have no idea. I was going to try and get a higher score and max it out, but then I felt like I was deterring others from competing so I stopped. Maybe Bert will tell us otherwise.
