Are you also counting homebrews? Those fit every bit the definition of unlicensed NES cart.

Prototypes are also turning up to this day, so it would have to be a living document of what constitutes an "NES cartridge."

There would also be vaporware like the Minnesota Lottery cart, which only exists in a blurry photo, or the original NWC Gold that had a full label (likely a mockup, though.)

I'm not counting homebrews. But I can see where the line would get blurry. My original thought was only unlicensed games that came out during the system's lifespan in the US, but it would be hard to justify what would count and what wouldn't.

As for prototypes like the ones you mentioned, we could just use that confirmed/unconfirmed feature that's been suggested a few times by @Joshua Rogers I believe.

  2. This site just isn't the best place for this kind of question. Sure, he/she can ask it here, but if he/she wants the best answer, take your question to another site where people are more knowledgeable about emulation and optimization for a specific computer.

Plus, this kind of question just seems lazy. Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but I understood it as "I'm too lazy to test things out myself, do my homework for me please." Honestly, the most accurate answer you're going to get will come from yourself testing your own device. And I doubt you won't enjoy it, many people have more fun setting up frontends and optimizing for their device than actually playing a specific game on their pc.

    Classic Mandela Effect lol

What about the cornucopia in the Fruit of the Loom logo or those Berenstain Bears? lol

Damn. I'm not sure about the Fruit of the Loom logo but I swear it was Berenstein Bears. How odd.

We have to remember as well that this is already the time when people who grew up with and had systems like the Dreamcast, N64, PS1 and GameCube as their first system(s) are reaching their 20s and 30s, which is going to create a peak like NES and SNES did back at the turn of the previous decade. That combined with all the COVID stuff as others have mentioned have basically injected that natural inflation with steroids.

I feel after the summer ends prices will probably cool a little, but not as much as one would hope. Games like Paper Mario are going to most likely experience what Conker's did just a few years ago where it went from a 100 dollar game back down to 65 or so. Across the board, though, we're going to probably wait until closer to 2030 when the Millenials and older Gen Z's have had their fill of nostalgia for the prices to plataeu like we are seeing now with NES.

That being said, like with "rare, but not truly that rare" hype games such as Little Sampson, I don't see the price of games like Sculptor's Cut doing anything but grow for a while, which it is doing at a much more stable incline than actually playable games such as Paper Mario.

I am very thankful that I have 95% of the playable 64 carts already in my collection, and pissed off I didn't buy a cart-only Sculptor's Cut back in 2010 when it was like a $30 cart and people only cared about the box and manual. I even had the chance to buy it back in 2017 for $325 and I decided to hold off, and now it's in the $400's. Sigh...

I'm kicking myself for not grabbing SM64 when it was $20. Now it's $50...

  5. What about consoles? So the NES had two NTSC console variations, the vanilla system and the toploader. However, consolevariations.com counts the classic edition system as an NES console variation. Should we do the same? I mean, it plays the same games using a near replica controller, but on different hardware. To me it's like counting the Switch, which has  these controllers and plays NES games via Switch online, as an NES console variation.

Hey guys, was thinking of loading some emulators on my PC. I have an Acer Predator with 16gb Ram, 1660ti card, some Intel chip. haha. I'm guessing I can run N64 at this point without a problem? How about Gamecube and PS2? I really don't want to bother unless I can be pretty confident there won't be headaches.

Dude, this isn't really the place. Everyone's computer is different, so do your own research or simply test it. There are better sites for questions like these (GBATEMP).

Or, if you're lazy, run RPCS3. If you can run Persona 5 at 60fps, you can run pretty much anything.

    The competition, combo, MACS carts

Those last few aren't required for a complete set, are they? I know DKC and Super Weekend aren't, since they're competition carts. Unless it's something about them being liquidated through NP magazine.

I doubt theyre going anywhere. Both have been around for a long time. It seems ridiculous to collectors but to the girlfriend/significant other looking to pick up a gift for their nerdy other, they're a "legitimate" store rather than some randos on eBay

So if say, DkOldies, sold things over the phone the conversation would look like this:

DKOldies:  How may I help you?

Customer: I'd like an n64 with a controller please.

    DKOldies: That'll be $164.99

    Customer: Thank you.

DKOldies: Would you like anything else?

Customer. Uh, sure. Can I get Ocarina of Time?

DKOldies: Your grand total is $243.98

    Customer: Seems legit

Like WTF. How could you be that stupid? A CiB sealed N64 with Super Mario 64 was $199 on release. Are people stupid enough to think a loose system with 1 controller and a game is worth more than that? If you go to yard sales you can easily pick up Ocarina and a console for under $60, or under $80 online pre-COVID.

How should we handle variants of the same game?: you have to decide which is going to be the 'first version' of a game, then others are variants. co-variants may exist too. up to you how you want to display these; split them up between 'pieces'(cart, box, manual, etc) or by product. e.g. does a 5-screw game constitute a whole new entry for a CIB or does it constitute a 'cart only' entry.

The "first version" should be determined by release date ofc. I think the type of variant should be noted as well (cart, artwork, 5 screw vs 3 screw). I'm not sure what we should do about the last part. My guess would be a "cart only" entry unless the variant had different CiB contents than the so-called first version, but I'm not quite sure about that. @Dr. Morbis Would be a good resource for this kind of thing.

If you think those prices are high check on dkoldies and lukiegames one of them was selling a loose copy of goldeneye for $69.99. $5 off from $74.99!

Yeah, those two are literally the scum(m) of the Earth. They're likely to go out of business soon anyway. They are both fighting for that demographic who doesn't care about their money and also doesn't care to do their research. Their biggest potential customers (collectors) see their markups and run back in the other direction.

I can't believe how many of the iconic RPGs haven't been touched yet. I think I'll start Earthbound, as I've never done it and have always meant to.

    Um,

@Reed Rothchild Earthbound's done. Is there any way to see what games haven't been beaten yet? The list on page 1 doesn't seem up to date. I also just beat SMB2 in All Stars if you'd like pics of that.

  12. I am so late to the N64 game. I should've jumped on the train years ago, but I guess I just thought the games haven't aged too well. Some of them have, some haven't, and some of them are simply timeless.

Anyway, I've been seeing N64 games absolutely skyrocket. You have Super Mario 64, as recently as 3 months ago it was a $20 game, now it's $50, and it's had consistent BIN sales of $60 and sometimes even $70. However, since a lot of these games have shot up, I've also seen them drop. Just look at Mario Kart 64, it quickly shot up, and now it's dropping back down. I'd like to tell myself it's because of accessible supply, since online shopping is the only option for most people, but I'm honestly not too sure. Are these doubled or sometimes even tripled values here to stay?

Are your games lose? Find the boxes and/or manuals if you really need to blow your money. At least then it's related to the games you care for. I think the only person who should go for a set is the one that knows 1000% they want to, and it looks like you're not.

My rule is if it's a cartridge, I go loose. If it's a disk, I go CiB. I have started to complete some of my loose games, but some of the boxes are really up there if you don't want one that's crushed. Like Earthbound, it's like $200 for a loose cart, and $500 for the box alone. Thanks for the suggestion! I'd honestly rather have a few good games complete than a hoard of random shit loose. I've never thought of it that way.
