  1. One more thing. Does anyone enjoy Yoshi's Island more than SMW? People are complaining about SMW being too slow, but Yoshi's Island makes SMW look like a speedrun. It's just so start-stoppy imo. Eat enemy, swallow, get egg, line egg up, throw egg, collect the little star dudes, repeat. And I think everyone hates Baby Mario in that game.

    2) I would not be interested in letting users register and choose 'i have this', etc.

I have changed these opinions and now, and rather think a community-driven database which users are publicly acknowledged for their help is better. That is to say, users will be able to: register, and create 'local' databases (which they can do whatever they want to, it doesnt affect the global database.). They will also be able to 'create a new game' with the option to submit it to an admin (e.g. me), to be added globally. If I accept this new game, they will be given some points which will be displayed on a high score. They will also be able to submit changes to items, and if those changes are accepted they will be given credit for the information and get some points too.

Probably more information but the most important info for me is: country, code, distributor.

Personally, I don't really care for the "I have this" feature, but it seems like something that a lot of people will want, so I still think we should implement it at some point.

A "leaderboard" for adding to the database would be awesome! It sounds like a great "reward" for contributing info. You could have an all-time leaderboard and a weekly/monthly leaderboard.

We should also add a date to each entry.

It’s just so dull.  The cutesy wootsy graphics really kill the edge and tension of the NES iterations for me.  It also felt really dragged out.  Whereas the length of the first could mostly be attributed to exploration and discovering your next moves (it’s actually relatively short once you know what you’re doing), the second just dragged on and on and I was tired of it by the time I even got to the dark world.

I actually thought Alttp was insanely short. I played ALBW first, so maybe that has something to do with it, but I got through Alttp blindly in 5 hours, less than it took me to beat Link's Awakening, which I think is the better Zelda game. Link's Awakening just has was more diversity in its dungeons, gameplay, and bosses, and I loved the tropicial island setting and the trading game. And it's also the first Zelda game to have an actual story.

  4. So I just found out about the ugly, but cool, Starfox Super Weekend jacket given out to finalists in the Starfox Super Weekend competition. After doing some digging, I found out that there is more merch from the event. There were apparently Super Weekend branded pens, pins, shirts, the cart itself, and God knows what else. Does anyone know anything about these items or about the competition? I'm not looking to buy, but I am looking to find out more info and document it.

I prefer SMB 3.  Id agree the cape thing was definitely inferior to the leaf.  Also I just feel like pound for pound it was better.  It might be that having less crap going on and fewer levels made it more focused.

Also, Zelda 1 IS superior to Link to the Past.  That’s a game that is way over hyped.

I was just stating that the comparison if Zelda 1 vs Alttp is similar to Smb3 vs Smw. What about alttp do you not like? I agree it's overhyped, but I still enjoyed it over Zelda 1. Zelda 1 without a map was so fun tho... Zelda 1 without a map was as addicting for me as playing Dark Souls blind.

  6. I absolutely love Super Mario Bros 3, and it's easily one of the best games on the NES. However, I personally prefer Super Mario World-- more levels, more secrets, more powerups, 16-bit graphics, more attacks, and connected world map rather than individual worlds, Yoshi, I could go on and on. However, I've seen people who actually like Super Mario Bros 3 more. Why is that? Is it all nostalgia? Don't get me wrong, SMB3 is phenomenal, but it just seems to me like World improved upon the Mario formula in every way. It's like Zelda 1 vs Link to the Past, Metroid vs Super Metroid, ect

    PEZ 3.jpg

Could you look into this more? Like, find region and dates produced? That would be a great help.

@KokiriChild Feel free to add to the Google Doc. If you would like editing privledges, PM me. I would like to get dates, regions, and companies up for everything. But to keep this list finite, I will only be doing Nintendo candy. There are tons of PEZ dispensers and specialty candies that are based on Sega and Playstation characters, but that's something I don't really have any interest in at the moment. You can add them if you'd like, though.

But if this database is created with information not available in any other collection tool, people might head this way to use it and contribute content to it if they are tracking their collection with it.

That is very true. However, I don't think it should be a priority atm. We have yet to even get the database up and on the site for easy access, let alone start adding features. Any tools in particular you're thinking of? I could totally model a collection tracker prototype around a certain app. It's not like I've got anything better to do 😌

Exciting Thread. Is this database going to also be turned into a checklist for people to track their collections with all the variations for cart, manual, boxes, and inserts as well?

I agree with @0xDEAFC0DE on this one. You already have that feature in so many other places that, while I agree it would be cool and convenient, it shouldn't be a primary focus this early on. But as I've said before, throwing ideas for features out to see what sticks isn't a bad thing, and it certainly helps to discuss those ideas to determine which direction we want to take this project in.

I don't think so. How many people have gotten the flu from a theme park and had no ground for a lawsuit. Hell, look at the norovirus. It's literally nicknamed the Cruise ship virus. There's no way a customer doesn't assume the risk of infection.

The only way companies can get in hot water is by not maintaining the safety of employees but I don't know the first thing about Florida's labor laws.

We'll have to wait and see. If people start dropping dead left and right because Disney take the proper precautions, there will definitely be some sort of legal action.

Yeah, Orlando ain’t taking this seriously at all.

Seems like on the 5th they’re going to reopen Disney World, and Universal.

Well that's because it's hurting their businesses, and they seem to value profits over public health. All it takes is one good lawyer and a victim of the virus, and bam, lawsuits even worse than losing money because of closed parks. If people start dying because they went to church or went to Disney, and the lawyer can prove that they got the disease at that location, shit will start going insane.

Yeah I don't really agree w/ Switch or other modern console emulation/hacking. Ideologically anyway. I think it's interesting as a tech person, but I also think that the minds behind that stuff could certainly be doing better things for the world.

It should be noted also that many disc-based emulators actually support loading from official discs. That's how I used to play FF12 on my laptop - I used an emulator, yes, but I was inserting my own FF12 disc into the laptop to load and play it. In many cases the greater power afforded the PC/laptop can mean a smoother experience than on original hardware. Just a sidenote.

    Yup. Sounds like BLEEM! 2.0

    They do.

Really? That seems like a surefire way to get demonetized. But regardless, it is true that it isn't promoted to the point of emulation. I mean, you have channels with millions of subscribers that are built around softmodding systems and emulation. Modern Vintage Gamer and MyMateVince come to mind, but there are some really big ones with 1,000,000+ subs that use emulation as their main content- how to's, tutorials, tips and tricks, showcases, reviews, ect.

To be honest, I love that emulation opens up games to a new audience. Hardly anyone would be able to experience Pazer Dragoon Saga if that weren't the case. Nevertheless, it is a bit of a legal and moral grey area, but if the system has been discontinued and games are no longer being sold for it at retailers, then I say go for it. I was suprised to see the Wii was getting new releases as recently as last year.

  14. I didn't mean to come off as a dick at all but a lot of people seem to take an opinion as a sign of hostility. Sorry if that seemed to be the case. I just feel like that question could be better answered by the OP themself or on another, more niche site specialized around emulation. I hate to sound like an echo of @Nintegageo but yeah, I could've phrased my post better and could've been nicer about getting my point across. If the OP truly wants the best answer he simply has to test things himself.

I am actually having trouble thinking of a comparable medium that DOESN'T have the same environment surrounding copies.

Newspapers? Not sure if you can even call that comparable.

Well, then it becomes what is the lifespan.

NES was shipped from 1985-1995, but it was available in stores up until at least 2000. It also had servicing up until around that time (Famicom had it until 2007, which would overlap with when the first homebrews came out.)

If the lifespan is fixed at 1995, then Cheetahmen II doesn't count.

And technically no prototype ever came out, and there's debate whether the Aladdin Deck Enhancer ever truly made it to stores.

Homebrewers were every bit as legit as say, Active Enterprises and Color Dreams, which were literally four or five people at most.

Exactly. Unless we want to go down the road of homebrews, I'm afraid we're on shaky ground. The NES was discontinued in Japan in 2003, but I'm not sure if that means anything if we're only logging NTSC games at the moment. But I'd love to get to PAL and JPN variants sometime in the near future.
