I would probably recommend playing FireRed/LeafGreen remakes over the original RBY unless you're playing through for completion sake or otherwise.

Also just a good entry point for newbies imho

Then grab a copy of (or emulate, flash kit) FireRed/LeafGreen.  They move along at a better pace, have a few nice very welcome refinements, and they're a lot less yappy and diverting than other releases so you can knock it out fairly quicker than the others.  Just don't go about 'gotta catch em all' and just nail down maybe 10~ enough to have the various types covered so you can hound the crap out of the gym battles and final four.

If time were a bit less of a factor, I'd say step back a couple years to Crystal since it rolls up R+B+Y(Gen1) into a second half after playing the expanded Gen2(Gold+Silver) content it has.  Or if it is, there's SoulSilver/HeartGold on DS which is basically Crystal, but has more ways to get done faster including a fairly decent XP share between active units you can find.
