NES 5 Screw Star Force, NES 5 Screw Silent Service

Recommended Posts

I liked the variant hunting cuz you can get something rare for cheap.  I lucked out on MTPO and Star Force and got them for nothing.  Mega Man is one of my favorite games ever so I felt my luck ran out and had to pay.  I still thank Laketown who sold it to me, as I will never get rid of it.  Gotcha I really wont pay for because I'm not gonna play it.  So if I can find it for cheap it'll be a thrill.

I see I see...he's not doing EVERY variant ...just the major variants and label/screw variants...that's cool...everyone has their thing...I'm sad to say I am one of those idiot variant collectors as well...except I take it waaaaay farther down the rabbit hole hahaha....thank God I chose to only do loose games....there are SO MANY ...it's definitely not for everyone ...it may sound insane to have 10 copies of 10 - yard Fight or 12 copies of golf or 9 copies of duck Hunt or excitebike but it keeps me going...the thrill of the hunt ...finding things that are beyond rare that nobody else cares about is awesome to me....and you learn a TON about games and their histories....I have so freaking many games I'm so stupid hahaha...if anyone ever wants to chat or ask about any variants I would love to talk about anything....oh...and the Mega Man picture...if that guy is looking for only the main label variants...he forgot there is a mega man 1 with an oval seal also....and if he wants to dive down my rabit hole he's gonna need about 5 more mega mans haha...you all have a good weekend!!!

FWIW we really should draw the line between a major and minor variant.  Major being screws, different labels and such, with minor being the large Castlevania logo, or the N7 Tecmo NBA Basketball etc

That's cool...but for idiots like me it doesn't matter much...a variants no matter how big or small is still a variant haha...

@Hollywoodcaddy Well then you'd just do the whole scope.  But I think it'll be easier to not only document but categorize.  Esp if someone wants to start, maybe they'd want all the major variants, different labels etc, but not oval vs. circle or TM vs C etc.

Documenting everything is an absolute must...without it there's no way of remembering every tiny little difference of many games...the problem is simply that nobody wants to just "share" their findings because of all the long hard work put into such a list...and I can't blame anyone for not wanting to do so...I know I won't just give the internet my list all willy nilly...but it's not simply because of selfishness...alot of it is because there is a lot to Interpret when deciding what is a variant or not a lot of times...I mean for example...loose games alone, let's say I have 1800 documented variants and 1800 games I've collected over the years of each one...every single game is different no two alike ...there's always going to be the question of where to draw the line...and that's hard to understand for anyone who hasn't truly dove into the rabbit hole and seen first hand how many variations there are for some games no matter how small....believe me I would love to have an ongoing conversation with other fellow variant collectors of nes games to see what I've missed and to fill in their gaps as well...it's simply extremely hard to do when they either don't go as far as I do or they won't consider something a variant or maybe they havnt documented the games correctly or the same way ....

Yes...there's a distinction...

An error is exactly that...an error on one or a few carts/labels every now and again...usually where the inker put alittle much on or smeard seal or a label that doesn't sit right or the ink ran out and a game printed something in white when it was supposed to be yellow...stuff like that is just an error....

🤣 I had no idea how far down the rabbit hole you go.  That's... a lot to deal with.

I would consider the N7 to be a major variant.  Different part number and a different game feature (Bulls guard #00) seems pretty significant to me.  But it's semantics.

I wouldn't only because other games have things like that with revisions.  I would say that the difference would have to be obvious.  We didn't even know about the N7 till like a couple of years ago

I still need Star Force and mega man...I fear I will never even get an opportunity to aquire those two because they're so rare 😪

Is there a list of games that had a revision that edited the game, manual and the box? Beyond the N7, I can't think of any off the top of my head.

For chips can find it on bootgods website.  Anytime theres a game revision, or graphic revision, a -1 is added to the chip.  Its usually pretty minor stuff, but I know off hand theres one for Mike Tyson (PRG-0 and PRG-1) and Zelda.  Im not familiar with anything manual or box related but I know there is out there.

Tons and tons of titles revised the manual and/or box in one way or another, but very few edited the actual game code in a manner that's immediately recognizable.  Even N7 would be considered a minor update since it took almost three decades for even the collecting community to start talking about it.

The problem with revisions (as with all variants) is the question of where to draw the line.  If you're talking about immediately recognizable changes to the ROM, I would use The Untouchables as an example, where the title screen of the newer "blue" release was completely revamped to match the art on the box and manual; that's something that you can't miss the moment you boot up the game...
