My stars & review are on the French iTunes... not sure if you will see it.
I was wondering about that. I'll see if I can figure out how to view those.

I want to hear more from the Super Mario Bros. 2 cart! Why did you censor it??!?!
We had someone ask this on Discord also. I know we dropped the explicit tag but I didn't realize there was an audience for this kind of filthy content.
If I've got a recording set up where Bart and Conor can't make it I might bring back SMB2 and Lizard cartridge for a three-way conversation... Not sure I'd be able to get a word in edgewise though as those are gonna be some extremely hot takes

Oh, and we're giving away a free digital copy of the excellent Witch n' Wiz for NES, courtesy of Matt Hughson! Just leave us a review on iTunes to enter, and we'll announce the winner during our upcoming Deadeus episode (due January 2022).

I don't believe that we have played at the same time so I was looking forward to seeing you in action.
Thanks! I was looking forward to my 16th or 15th place flameout. Maybe next year.

Wish I wasn't swamped and could take part. Good look to everyone participating!

Hi all, just clearing out extra items ahead of the holidays.
Selling one new Kira Kira Star Night DX for Famicom. If you're familiar with these things, they do not run on all NES / Famicom models. Newer NES / FC models and emulator-based systems seem to work ok. I'm not sure about AVS / Nt Mini setups. If you want one please know what you are buying first. More pics available here. Asking $60 plus shipping of your choice.
Also selling one original Gradius II Famicom cartridge with custom plastic case. The case is very similarly sized to an actual standard Famicom box (about 2-3mm wider and shorter) and looks fine on a shelf with authentic FC cases. Looks and feels similar to a Namcot clamshell box. More pics available here. Asking $35 plus shipping of your choice.

Cotton: Reboot! Both the new “reboot” and the original Sharp X68000 versions. It was interesting to see what was changed from the original, including a deeper power-up system and rebalanced bosses. Both are very interesting shooters.

Hi all, I just launched a podcast focused on homebrew games. We're using a "game club" format where two friends and I pick one game to play for each episode, then get together after a month to talk about it. The first episode is more of an introductory discussion among the three of us about our histories with games and what we each bring to the table. I would like to think we represent three somewhat different perspectives, with each of us shaped by our professional experiences around the game, tech, and film/video industries.
You can listen to a short (45 second) promo clip on our main podcast feed here. Our angle is sort of "smart commentary by way of stupid humor," which... should be obvious from the trailer.
We have fairly active discussions going on Discord about each game we cover. For links to our Discord server (and other social media), check out our Linktree at http://homebrewgameclub.com.
Direct links to each episode are below, and I'll be adding new episodes to the VGS Blog section as they post. Feel free to use this thread for general comments. We are just getting off the ground and are always looking for ways to improve, so constructive suggestions or other feedback are greatly appreciated!

For everyone who thinks the nostalgia classics are timeless must plays that all will enjoy, just check the latest IGN twitter poll thing: https://twitter.com/IGN/status/1438563571286167552/photo/1
Rise of the Tomb Raider beat Half-Life 2
Burnout 3 beat Chrono Trigger
Skyrim beat Ocarina of Time
Smash Ultimate beat Super Mario World
Batman Arkham City beat Super Mario 64
Apex Legends beat Super MetroidThese are the opinions of the next big generation that will grow into collectors, lol. They do not give ONE F.
In fairness, a few of those were close. And that whole bracket looks inspired to produce hot garbage takes, not just the retro matchups.

I have no skin in this game but I’m following it because it’s fascinating.
Same. I am rolling around in popcorn over here and loving my trashy NES cart-only collection right now.

Eh, ran out of time. I did better this week than I expected so I’m fine with it.

Updated. Unfortunately, for some reason my kids don’t want to watch me practice the last level of this game for another hour today so that’s probably my final score. Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there.

Heh, we both posted new scores at almost exactly the same time, and our scores were almost identical... except that I beat you by a hair The real question, though, is how did I get twice as many coins as you going through the exact same levels to almost the exact same point in the game (7-1 vs 7-2)??? Weird...
Oh wow, ha. Yeah I made a dumb jump at the end of the train right before 7-2 starts and blew a pretty good run. I’m not bothering with coins at all since they don’t add to the score and the only reason to pick them up is to add extra lives I don’t need.

I had no time at all this week to practice, so here’s my participation score. -

Might've been a fun variation and pop of a few peppers into the gumbo by allowing everyone to recruit a friend to play the heli or jeep....
A 2 player NES co-op contest would be fun.
This is unrelated to anything but my idea for a NES co-op game would just be Jackal but where one player controls the jeep and the other handles all the guns and grenades. I don't know if it would be possible to hack something like that but it would be amazing.
-
110,300 + 30,000 = 140,300
One day I will actually learn how to play this game, but it wasn’t going to happen this week.

I've thought about it, but prolly too little for present day or too much for the future. Imagine for a moment how bad this would get in the event of the "Matter Transporter" being perfected and introduced to private/public use. Stuff wouldn't even have to be 'put up for sale.' There'd be "Assholes" from elsewhere buying up everything rare; entire countries would be "Looted."
If we’re in a world with matter transporters exist, I’m assuming we also have matter replicators, so you wouldn’t need to collect originals when you can make an atomic-level perfect copy. Can’t wait to read the forum posts on those real-vs-repro debates.

"Nostalgia" is just one type of value that makes up a thing's worth to someone. I didn't grow up in Japan, so I have no nostalgia for Famicom, but my FC collection has tremendous value to me regardless. By the same token, I've seen plenty of Japanese and other international Instagram users collecting North American NES releases for what I'm assuming are similar motivations. Should that bother me? I see it (and social media certainly helps) as an international community of retro video game nerds who share a unique appreciation for these things beyond their own personal histories with games. As long as the items are ending up in the hands of people who value them, I think it's great. I don't really care why they value them.
Also, "for keeps" is relative. Things change, and we're not exactly talking about the treasures of the British Museum here. It's possible the retro game trend dies down in the US and suddenly you've got internet companies set up to sell American-owned Famicom cartridges back to Japanese buyers. Who knows?

Finally just got a shipping notice for Darius: Cozmic Revelation from Strictly Limited. Still no word on my Cotton Reboot preorder, although their website says it's expected to ship in July. These are only my 2nd and 3rd orders from this publisher but my experience so far is that they make Limited Run look snappy.
