Trip World is one of the most hidden yet clearly not style "gems" of the old DMG that never annoyingly made it stateside.  Much like Twinbee and Parodius, they're in english, in England/UK, just no tin the USA.  Same with Trip World, quality release Japan and they got, we didn't.  The animation, detail, audio are on a high end tier for the device, Sunsoft really went all out.  The only thing it lacks, other than the final boss really, is difficulty.

It may even be little mermaid easy. 😉

It's part of that rarity lore like Mr Gimmick or Little Samson i think that's how most people know about it. I've been looking on and off to perhaps snap one up but that white JAP box never seems quite pristine there's always this layer of dirt on it.

  2. It's a legendary game that almost everyone with a NES or at their friends played.

Yet these days i just don't have much fun playing it. The levels are easy, the coins don't hold significance, the secret rooms and pipes feel more like a chore to reach rather than something fun. It's the type of game where experiencing itself largely contributes to the enjoyment but ones that has been seen & done there's just not a ton of fun left in the actual gameplay. As things stand today i'd give it a 4.

  3. Legacy don't really exist. Future generations make an independent choice anyway, and it's dubious whether they even known who some great grandfather was at all. It's not like i'm upholding some pact with my forefather: for all intents and purposes the peak of what he could be for in my life is a curiosity written down in some old document.

Besides the lineage will one die off regardless. Someone else will not want to have kids or the kid dies before he reproduces etc.

IMHO, the best of Jack Black in film is Orange County and High Fidelity.  If you want to see his best work in a kids film then watch School of Rock

I can enjoy Jack Black.  I find him more amusing as person in real life than his movies but in general I find the movies he tends to be in to be "good" but not great.  Shallow Hal wasn't bad either.  It falls in that category of "worth watching if you're bored and happen to catch it while flipping through the channels" category.

Yeah i might get around to it one day. I've heard about him being known for School of Rock too, never saw it though. He's basically this guy where i'll know the name and face without actually knowing why. Fuck her Gently was one those early flash clips back in the day when that was a thing i found it through that - not through music as such.

Who said anything about a decline?  His cringe rock has always been insufferable and tends to drag stuff down.  His work is either I think a love it or hate it, and yeah I hate it.  You can't decline when it's already pretty rock bottom.  It just was quite out of place in the movie and painful to listen to.  It felt like it was a stipulation on his part to be himself in the movie, it's just feels forced.

I don't mean him i mean Bowser. I understood it as you saying that song was out of character for him. I don't see it as out of character because it never was too serious anyway.

I don't really know much about Jack Black but i do like Tribute and think Fuck her Gently is funny especially with the music video. I don't love Jack Black. I barely know what he does and didn't even recognize him in this, and if it was someone else someone else would've been unhappy instead so yeah there's really not much to it.

Because they are jack black drones with no good taste in music.  That piece of horrible, very out of place, not just horrible but quite largely just cringy.  Why that guy feels the need to do his lame rock shtick in anything he does is beyond played out into just annoying now.  He did the role well otherwise, but I'm of a mind that when the movie comes to disc, I'll hit the skip button over that minute of ear f'ing abuse (and if I get the CD, that's the ONE track I will NOT MP3 for my phone.)

Since those clowns said they only will reserve the Mario Rap for vinyl which is just warped logic, I'll throw that into the gap.

I mean you can't really prove a joke to anyone. If you don't like it then that's just the way it is. But the cringe is built into it, the fact he's playing piano and singing a cheesy rock ballad about someone he should be dominating.

I don't think it's out of character. The whole universe is halfway goofy anyway and the evildoers kid friendly. I don't know when this supposed big decline started to happen in your eyes but it sure wasn't from yesterday.

Oh, I legit think they tried to reference at least every main Mario game.  I saw references to every game I was familiar with. SMB 1-3, Mario World, Mario 64 and Odyssey.  At first I was scratching my head as to why they would have Easter eggs for a modern title and then it donned on me—they want to have Easter eggs for everyone, including newer younger fans that might have only played the more recent titles.  This wasn’t just a nostalgia trip.

As a Dad, I appreciated that.  My kids are familiar with the older games cause their Dad is a vintage gaming nut, but I was glad to see the new generation of fans wasn’t left out of the fun.

The movie is by far from perfect but for what it is, it’s amazing.  It’s like a giant Where’s Waldo of Mario and For at least one film, I wouldn’t want it any other way.  They can get a bit more creative with the sequel.  Maybe Bowser won’t be a bad guy and we’ll get something more like the Paper Mario/ Super Mario RPG type of story lines.

They would've known that a lot of the people that grew up with the older titles are still active in playing, collecting or even just remembering the character so it makes perfect sense to me. The newer games too use some older concepts it was always a thing.

Also i think people would expect the movie to be faithful to the games and complain why this or that wasn't there or looked a certain way. And the games themselves don't have much of a plot to begin with.

Perhaps it could've been a more hazardous adventure where Mario is close to dying and it peaks with a grand battle in a castle where he topples Bowser and saves the princess, i don't know. Now they went with a "banter & gags" type of violence flavor and that works too.

I mean… this was really more like Mario Odyssey The Movie, but without the talking hat and with Donkey Kong.

Well ok, there are a lot of differences but the plot is the same.

Maybe, altough i still noticed a lot of trivia sprinkled in going as far back as the NES/SNES era.

The ending wasn't all that great imo.

Pratt was fine, didn't even notice. Jack Black was fine as Bowser until the singing. The Peaches song is annoying and terrible, and her name happens to NOT be Peaches, and a solid chunk of the internet thinks it's the best song in the world. That's my chief complaint, the movie was lots of fun.

Oh man that was the highlight of the movie. The idea that he's not just an evil overlord but really this emotional guy and sucker for love that has gone unanswered lol. In the context of being the last boss and kidnapper that's just a brilliant touch.

The Super Mario universe never was very dark anyway it was always a "kid's tale villain" type of atmosphere so i think it's on point.

  10. I'd say around a 7. The hidden areas in all these games are often counter-intuitive and it drags to be thorough going backwards before moving forward because there might be one behind a wall.

    The theme/atmosphere is great throughout.

Altough always thought it would've been way better if the clear % was based on the K-O-N-G letters instead. Those tended to flow along with the gameplay much more naturally.

Never say never.  "Progress" is inevitable because people like us are the growing minority.

If the physical market share went from 100% to 70% to 30% (or whatever the PS5 is selling at), then it IS going to eventually happen.

That's the key factor. We see this in just about everything where an item has a main and secondary function (the main here ofcourse is being able to play the game).

It can be done without going anywhere and without having a bookshelf filled with stuff. Most people will jump on that. They don't even have an emotional connection involved because they never did anything but streamed services.

There have been some 116 million PS4 systems sold, and currently although PS5 digital games are more popular than physical discs (they are also typically cheaper), the number of games purchased digitally decreased in the second half of 2022.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/guides/tech/ps5-digital-vs-disc

I think there is basically a 0% chance that physical games are going to go away. LRG will still be around 10 years from now, probably stronger than ever, and hey, anyone that's not a fan absolutely does not have to purchase from them. Oh, and LRG always started out with the intention of catering only to a small niche group of gamers, but clearly, demand far exceeded expectations.

It decreased from an overwhelmingly dominant position to a still comfortably dominant one going by those numbers... hardly reassuring stuff.

From what i've noticed digital games can get away with having the same prices as physical. The idea used to be that forgoing materials, printing, storage and transportation would ultimately mean the buyer could get the game cheaper but instead it will be the companies just pocket the added profit for themselves and keep the higher prices.

Also remember that the digital only PS5 comes from a previously nonexistant position to take marketshares so any gain is bad news. It's not like physical is winning if 80% of PS4's sold have a discdrive it's a loss to that 20% extent.

As Playstation goes they also mandate that physical games are avilable digitally too the reverse ofcourse doesn't apply.

We're talking about SRG, not LRG 🙂
But, I'm not saying you're wrong, nor am I saying you're right. Still, I can't help but feel this is more likely related to copyright than demand. As for "
LRG's place is slowly becoming less relevant to the hobby." that I can't agree with. If anything, I feel they're more relevant today simply by the fact that they now also publish a ton of merchandise, have their own amazon and best-buy stores, etc. Many of their games still command high second-hand prices, not all of course, but many. Ultimately, I feel they are still very relevant because they still publish many titles you simply can not get physically otherwise. Yes, Play-Asia also publish physical copies that sometimes overlap with LRG, but for the most LRG publishes far more than Play-Asia and the vast majority of titles published by LRG do not make it to Play-Asia's "exclusive" physical editions.

Well digital is pushing physical out every day so even if LRG wanted to keep releasing discs, one day there will be no new console to do it for. Just like on PC.

They can still push pre-PS5/6/whatever releases, but i don't see much new blood that will enter, and for every oldhead dropping out it will just add to a steady but sure overall decline.

And i don't think LRG will be around just for a tiny fraction of enthusiasts. It's just that as of now the pool is big enough.

I voted 4 since SMB2 is better regardless of today's date.

Yeah it is better. SMB 3 is one of those experience trips where in it's time you're excited about how a suit changes the gameplay or the fact that there are hidden areas. But once those excitements wear off there's a lot less to it.

I have the Light and totally appreciate it.  Had Nintendo learned their lessons earlier about doing a global launch vs waiting a year plus that would and should have come to the US.  It's a brilliant handheld with a POCKET quality LCD that just pops when it's on like a late 90s Timex Indiglo watch.  On rare occasion so it doesn't just rot from utter disuse I will pop it out of my display case and give it a gentle game of something I know won't be an issue. 🙂

My experience is that all first gen GB's suffer from lack of shading on the Greenish-black & white display (so that in a game like Donkey Kong Land you will have hard time to see wtf is going on) along with blur when there is high speed, and Light is no exception. The backlight itself however should've been utilized afterwards instead of missing on the GBC and GBA.

It's really not until GBC that Game Boy games became fully functional and could reach their intended potential. Compare the B&W palette on the GBC to that of the GBP or GBL and you will see clearly.

On top of that there is it's own unique colorscheme for GB games alongside the other single colored palettes and those aren't just a gimmick, they do add great value.

So yeah, GBC sidekicks as the definitive first gen. Game Boy version too even though that by definition it ofcourse isn't.

Nice moves. And I agree about the controls. There's a bit of a learning curve, but they're actually quite good once you get the hang of it.

I liken it to Double Dragon 2. At first it feels like the controls are shit, but once you actually figure them out the control function is incredible and very intuitive.

    No it's shit then too.

Maybe. The Super Game Boy was interesting, but hardly widespread, and the Play It Loud series was just cosmetic shells, no real gameplay improvement.

I think Nintendo just introduced the GBC to bolster flagging GB sales. Nintendo doesn't seem to respond to much of anything except their own sales numbers. Their competitors can release any number of innovations, but until it hits Nintendo's pocketbook, they're content to stick with what they have out there.

I'm talking about the fact that Nintendo still were into keeping GB relevant.

If it was to bolster GB sales they should've highlighted how it improved the gameplay. That just reinforces that they should've.
