Mike Tyson - “If you think I signed the contract for money, you’re fucking stupid. I’m coming to retire him early, so he can join his brother in WWE. Listen he ain’t doing shit to me, you gonna see how old I am fight night. I like Jake as a person, he knows it, but I’m a different animal. I’m doing the world of boxing a favor. Enough with this nonsense you’ll see, I'm coming for his head”

How absolutely entertaining would it be if Grandpa Iron Mike put this kid on his ass but as with anything in this country anymore I don’t trust that this isn’t just more marketing.

It really irks the crap out of me when I see a repro game listed as “brand new”.
My general tip is to seriously question authenticity if the game/box is mint but missing the manual. And if it comes in CIB form, then look at the manual because that’s what I feel is the hardest to do a reproduction on.

What generation of platforms are you referring to?  My experience is mostly NES related and for me the box flaps are always the dead giveaway.  Are repro discs themselves convincing?

I've gotten a number of China/Aliexpress repros where they blur out the copyrighted name on the listing, then the actual product has the correct text on it anyway.  Pretty sure it's just to avoid getting dinged by the platform.

I'd personally say while new discs are one thing that would be interesting to have created, perfect replica paper would be the grail for bootleggers.  The sheer number of loose disc items that could be sold with an undistinguishable set of materials is probably quite high, thankfully no one has gotten that good yet.

I was thinking that pic looks like they used the blackout tool on the pic to cover up the “lay”

This brings a whole new dimension to the argument!

If I remember correctly, the rationale behind the proponents of "P" was that PlayStation is a single word - so only the first letter should be represented in the acronym. But now that these bootlegs are branding themselves "P Station", we're back to "PS" - one letter to abbreviate each word.

Still doesn't solve the "X" versus "1" problem, though...

The “1” only ever appeared post PS2 obviously and it is now convenient shorthand to identify the original iteration amongst its successors.  However, when considering historical precedent….it’s friggin PSX.

Cloud Strife made a cameo in Final Fantasy Tactics.  You could side-quest to get him into your party.

Not just Cloud - you encounter Aeris too while on the side quest to get him.  Lol I was so obsessed with FFVII back then.  I even got Ehrgeiz because of it.  Unlike Ehrgeiz though, Tactics was so awesome and I could pretty much play it endlessly.

  6. SOTN is up there.  I like the soundtrack from FFVII pretty well too.  There is a lot of really iconic stuff in there.   Suikoden II is up there for me too.  Really contributed to what made it incredible.  Good enough to make me put down the ReLoad cd and listen.

  7. I’m going to go a slightly easier route than trying to pull the rarest most obscure thing I can think of out my butt.

here’s a top five games I’ve been wanting to add a complete copy of to my collection.  Really these kind of represent mental categories of games I still want. Not necessarily the rarest or priciest but just some of the stuff I’ve spent the most time fawning over.

    1.  Balloon Fight - NES - there’s a bunch of black box I want.  This one is at the top of the list for whatever reason.  I like balloon fight even though it’s shitty.

    2. Mike Tyson Punch Out - NES - top want from the dank titles I still need complete.  Beats out stuff like battletoads or duck tales.  Since money isn’t a concern, I want a copy with the letter.

    3. PTO II - SNES - strong contender for favorite snes game.  There’s only a handful of titles on snes that I’d bother looking for complete.  Childhood titles & dank games.

    4. Little Samson - NES - I’d love to complete this and upgrade it from my loose to CIB collection.  Collector porn jewel.

    5.  Die Schlümpfe - NES - There‘s a handful of pal games I’m interested in and this one and der König der Löwen are at the top.

Ok I guess that’s it.  Just 5 things is hard.

Fun fact:  When I hunt boxed NES I prefer Rev A.  The boxes are more easily found in nicer shape and they are usually cheaper than their non-rev a counterparts.  I definitely don’t need to deal with an extra flappy thing that can get damaged.

  8. I definitely wouldn’t ever describe myself as a pioneer but I’m not just following trends and hype trains.  Mostly.

Back when I was first building a loose NES collection I was definitely prone to getting all hyped up on NA threads about whatever was that weeks topic and running out and snagging it.  I also like having the dank games for a system in my collection.  I think it makes a nice base from which to explore further.

A few years later and I got really heavy into PlayStation collecting.  That collecting definitely had more of a Wild West feel to it than the more mature NES collecting scene.  There was something of a price crash for PSX stuff in… I want to say 2011? And I jumped on in the cheap afterglow of that crash.  While actually collecting it, it was not as well documented as what NA had done for Nintendo stuff so there was a lot more pulling a direction to collect for it out of my butt.  I actually spent a lot of time combing through old digit press stuff to do it.  From time to time I’d sort their rarity chart tool by the different rarities starting at the top and I would check and buy anything that came up cheap/as a good deal.  I wanted them all 🤷‍♂️.

I remember one day on PlayStationAge some dude showed up who was into those rare Greatest Hits releases (Im thinking Toy Story and Blitz 01 specifically). Spent a good amount of time watching those bad boys on eBay because back then you could still catch people that didn’t realize they were anything special.

I’m still waiting for the day people come clamoring for my Lightspan stuff.  Any day now.  Any day.  How the hell did I end up collecting these damn things?  It’s not like you ever actually see any of the damn rare older discs.  Like Bigfoot.  The only traces are what you can find on game-rave, some old digitpress threads, and there’s videos of a mentally handicapped guy who apparently has them.

And that’s the closest I’ve ever been to being on the cutting edge.  oh I also bought some ps2 lots before it was cool.

    Not exactly Neil Earhart.

People need to stop acting like buying cryptocurrency is some kind of next century investment. You’re online gambling, and being snotty about it.

I’ve got a little bit of crypto and you’d better believe I consider that the same pool of money as my sports gambling funds.  At this point, I’m mostly just riding whatever happens to Ethereum.  I’ve got just enough to make the whole thing interesting to me.  As a non-computer nerd average dumb ass American there might as well be zero function to them beyond as a gambling vehicle to me.

When I was in 6th grade we moved to a rural area of the county and in my new school system one pizza day every month was Mexican pizzas and they called them Happy Josés.  Damn those things were tasty though.
    Also Turkey Gravy day ftw.

  11. Holy gamole.  That “old timer” sure is flipping out.  Was RH’s question ever actually answered beyond, “how dare you! Why would I fake a proto?! These are definitely 100% absolutely indisputably not fake!”   Irritating.

  12. I think I like the hunt and snagging a good deal better than I actually like owning the stuff lol so slow and steady here.  Pshh I’m not just going to fling money around and pick that game up now for $30.  Hell no, I’m going to wait until I see an acceptable copy in the low 20s… … … …

… oh now it’s going for $40?  Pshh I’m sure I’ll see one pop up eventually for closer to $30.  I’ll just bide my time suckers… …
