Oh man, my wife will STILL not watch this episode.  I make jokes about turning it on to see if she's softened to watching it again, but she's adamant.

Futurama is the best and there were a handful of these tear jerkers.  The one about Fry‘s brother gets me every time too.

  2. Drove to Pittsburgh to catch this one.

    Elvenking/Alestorm

Forgot to get an Alestorm pic but I really wasn’t there to see shitty Korpiklaani.
I‘ve been waiting like 25 years to see Elvenking.  It was awesome and they got an hour set.  Also saw some crowdsurfer get dropped on his head.  I thought that dude was dead.  Remember kids, DO NOT crowd surf in an area of the crowd filled with dungeons & dragons guys.

  3. It’s been a slow trim for years now.  Working through some PS2 stuff these days (at great prices! ) in my FS thread.  I’m avoiding the eBay selling experience these days so it’s slow going.

Collecting level is low right now so I’m mostly just browsing waiting for a smack you in the face deal.  My volume days are over.  Probably.  Targeting a 2038 return.

At this point, I'm just not into newer consoles but from time to time, I get the itch to consider doing a modern upgrade.  That said, I'm just not super-impressed with what I've seen from this era of games compared to the PS4 era.  There's a chance I'll get a PS6 once it's been out for a few years (which means, this will likely be around 2030) but I do intended to try and get the 3x Final Fantasy VII games, assuming they are all out and accessible then.  Certainly, after they release the 3rd game and let it make it's profits, they will release a 3-in-1 package deal for the PS6.  Even if I don't buy too many more games for it, it will likely be enough to motivate me to get a used model and (hopefully) used copies of the trilogy.

I’m cheap and I’m never going to spend $500 on the system.  These FFVII games are the only things I’m aware of on the system that makes me really want one.  Maybe I’m missing some revolutionary stuff but it doesn’t seem like it. I feel like I would’ve heard about that around here at some point. When the prices come down because everyone is ready to move on that’ll be my moment.

Sure, but we need to be welcoming to new members. Otherwise the community grows stagnant. I mean, you guys are great and all, but, you know.

Plus, maybe he's just got the spark and could turn it into a real passion, but some douchebag killed his spark early on. We don't suddenly develop a passion full blown from day one. Well, maybe you do, but you're a weird exception. 😛

That was my thought.  Why would it start out as passion?  The first thing I bought when I discovered I could buy old Nintendo tapes on eBay was a copy of Dragon Warrior 2.  I’d casually looked for it whenever I encountered nes games for the past more than a decade.  It wasn’t a passion.  It was a dipping of toes.  The thing that drew me to NA was trying to find out how much the games I had were worth.  It grew into passion, and experience, and knowledge with time and “nurturing“.  It is a serious mistake for this community to begrudge new people their ignorance.  Though let’s be honest, there are plenty of people here who would be more than happy to lay into someone giving a rookie an undeserved hard time.  That being said, some good natured shit talking is fine and good for bonding or something.

Totally see where you're coming from. The days of conversations regarding hidden gems is still here, just not when it comes to classic systems like NES, SNES, etc. Classic video games are now the hottest collectible, and they are following the same trajectory as baseball cards and comic books from decades ago. As much as we might be "shocked" at prices now, a few more decades and people will fondly look back at a time when you could purchase a minty graded NES game for "only a few hundred dollars".

It’s not even the value really.  100k for a very nice sealed copy of that big of a name?  Sure, why not.  As a mostly NES collector I’m just opining bygone days when NES discussion was about something other than how much cash sealed collectors are throwing around or which print run something is.  That noob thread got me reminiscing.  Remember how dramatic and exciting the Atwood saga was?

I don't think it's necessarily a matter of people having fun dunking noobs, rather it's a matter of people being sick of dealing with idiots, though sadly we live in an age where everyone prefers to have someone take them by the hand rather than do some research, take a look around, explore, and then ask.

Oh don’t be so cantankerous.  You were a new guy once too you know.  When someone is new they are going to have no idea where to look or what is a reliable source of information.  You also have to take into account that someone with no background in game collecting is not going to even consider that their question or topic is going to have already been discussed into the ground.

In my example, no one chased him away.  He came and went on his own accord in less time that it takes to complete a baseball season.

.  That forum was already well known for being fairly hostile towards new collectors, but they really went off on this guy.  I would be lying if I said I wasn't a little entertained by the backlash.

It not the speed collection alone.  It's the in and out in such a short time frame never to be heard from again.  Such a person contributes nothing to the community except for increasing prices.  As I've mentioned before, I try to allow everyone to collect in their own way and I try to be as open minded as possible.  But I still have my limits.

It‘s not going to be long term for everyone and I don’t feel like it has to be.  I get into stuff all the time where I get super obsessed, burn out, and move on.  I’m also not going hold increasing prices against some rando day collector.  Am I going to bond with this guy?  Probably not.  But I’m also not going to chase him away.

Who knows?  But the thing that really turned me off from that "collector," was the mentality of "if I can't own every game in the set, I don't want to own any of it."  It's such a toxic mindset and it's the type of new collector that makes you want to hate on all new collectors even if 99% don't deserve the hate.

That’s not how I collect (or can afford to collect) but why the hate?  Is it the old anti-speed collector thing?  I mean I can certainly think of a time where I was buying every game that my bank account allowed.  I’m genuinely not getting why there’s be that much backlash.

This is such a major deterrent from me giving that forum any modicum of respect.  The other day a post showed up in my feed where @Rdools posted a bunch of pics of some really pretty sealed graded stuff and the comments were just a wall of unthinking venom.  It was comically like a stereotypical mob calling for Frankenstein‘s head.  Holy crap man.

  12. I mean, I’m no meaner to new people than I am to you guys 😜.  I try to be nicer when I cross paths with newer members.  There’s a great core of voices here but I am aware that we are like pandas and someone’s gotta get to makin babies.  Or not.  🤷‍♂️

I’ll browse r/gamecollecting sometimes but I very rarely contribute.  Those people can be like vicious pack of dogs.  Every once in a while I’ll add something when I see a topic with few responses where OP isn’t getting their question answered correctly.  It’s a younger demo over there though and I don’t really care about most of what’s being collected.

  13. Ahh yeah I actually meant about the black disc from a visual perspective.  I know there’s actual nerd based protections on there against copying but for us dopes out here I think the big takeaway is, “why your Persona no have black bottom? Me love black bottoms” The vast majority of titles are going to have that hurdle.   Could always see a wave of fake Blitz 2001s though.

When I looked at the auction, the disc looked minty and authentic. I don't know if there's a clear way to tell if it's not an authentic PS1 disc without actually holding it in your hands, and even then I suppose it would depend on the quality of the repro.

I’m just thinking that Ive never encountered anything that basically wasn’t just a burned cd.  It was always my understanding that one of the barriers to producing fake copies was the black bottoms.  So I was just curious if there had been advancements of which I was unaware.
