  1. I don't know if we're ready for victory posts yet, but if we are, I knocked out The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Juggernauts: I don't understand this game. Last year I had what seemed like a near-perfect run and didn't make the $100,000 (ergo, didn't beat the game). This year I botched up a ton of things, including stupidly losing 3 lives on the Apu stage, and still eked out a victory (by a margin of a few hundred dollars).
  2. Beat Spot: Never played it before, but figured it out as I went along, and won on my second attempt. The CPU is hardly a tough adversary.
  3. If we're still tracking Japanese games -- not sure if "SFC/PAL" is meant to include those, or only Euro titles? -- then I beat Go Go Ackman today, using the fan-translation patch from 1999. (Well, I beat it whether or not we're tracking Japanese games, but you get my drift.)
  4. I just cleared In Your Face in both 1-on-1 and 2-on-2 modes. Wasn't quick enough to get a picture of the brief ending with my smart phone (more evidence that when it comes to taking a very quick picture, a real camera or a dumb phone is still faster). So, the record is ours! No more trawling through archived NA threads to be reminded of the high-water mark, because that high-water mark is 2019.
  5. The first one is my favorite too, though not for that reason. When I replayed all the Mega Man games recently (well, 1-8 anyway), I was reminded of how easy it is to end up in a position of having to farm for weapon energy because that one boss can only be hit by a very specific weapon, or spending hours searching for obscurely hidden stuff. I like the fact that MM1 is lean and no-nonsense and a little bit weird. Really, the only significant flaw is the bad collision detection on the moving platforms that shoot out their sides.
  6. I beat The Adventures of Rad Gravity: No idea how I beat this one as a kid, especially as a rental, since there's so much obscure nonsense that needs to be sussed out. I probably called the Nintendo Game Counselors a bunch.
  7. The guy who was working on it got stuck somewhere in the 80s, IIRC. He shared his password with us and said he might try again at some point, or someone else could pick it up where he'd left off. And then he died. That was Tim Maurer, aka Tim333.
  8. For next year, if there were some way to reward playing on higher difficulty settings or getting the best ending, that'd be a fun twist. Maybe there could be an extra bounty on certain games in addition to their point value, and it could be available even if the game's already been beaten: that way people can still beat the likes of Chessmaster, Metroid and Castlevania II right away, but someone else could come along and do it on max difficulty or get the game's best ending. Anyway, just a thought.
  9. We've used clearing Level 4 as the standard, I think? The enemy aggression rollover trick was the only way I was able to pull that one off back in 2016.
  10. Huh, that's interesting. What hardware are you playing on? It could be an obscure compatibility issue, like Burai Fighter Deluxe and Road Rash on the GBC (both crash).
  11. Is your username the same as here? Sega-16's registration system is notoriously awful, but I can post in the "Please activate this person" thread and ask them to expedite matters. Glad to do whatever I can to help.
  12. There were GBC comps in 2016, 2017, and 2018, with varying degrees of participation. The German-language message board CiBo is also doing a GB+GBC comp this year: https://circuit-board.de/forum/index.php/Thread/27501-Can-CiBo-Beat-Every-GB-GBC-Game-in-a-Year-2019/ Personally I'd enjoy a GBC comp as well, though I'm not yet sure how much I'd participate. Then again I did beat Snoopy Tennis this year on easier difficulties; haven't cracked Hard yet, though I'd be happy to try for 2020. EDIT: It looks like 2016 did OK at NA, with 71 GBC games beaten out of 452. However, 2017 and 2018 were sad -- only 28 and 18 GBC games beaten, respectively. There was some inconsistency with the threads being updated in those years, which didn't help. BTW "Townsville" is a good search term to use at GoCollect for the old GBC threads, since it's unique to an obscure Powerpuff Girls game.
  13. I played through the fan-translated version of Donald Duck no Mahou no Boushi (aka Donald Duck and the Magical Hat) on Easy and Medium difficulties. Didn't happen to grab a screenshot but I'll be doing Hard difficulty soon and can supply one then if need be.
  14. Oh, wow! Congratulations! Would you be willing to register for Sega-16 to knock that one off there as well?
  15. I did that one myself, and used Flash Columns, Pro class, Height 9. Probably Pro difficulty shouldn't be required, so that sounds good. The main game has no ending. Thought of some other games with weirdo win conditions: Star Control - I'd say beat Melee mode and win one scenario in Scenario mode, on Good difficulty or better. The game has a bunch of self-contained scenarios so there's no reason to beat any one of them. Todd's Adventures in Slime World - tricky, because this has seven self-contained modes or levels, none of which give credits but each has the same basic ending with different text based on the mode you choose. Could just beat one, though I personally beat all of them. Frogger - get the high score, there's no ending. Pro Quarterback - win one game, there's nothing else. WarpSpeed - beat Campaign mode
  16. At Sega-16 we used the policy that it doesn't have to be the best ending, but it can't be a clearly "bad" ending. For instance, this ending on Rolo to the Rescue wouldn't suffice, since it's hard to come away with the impression that the game is giving you credit for a win: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YFQhJqpYkYY&feature=youtu.be&t=470 OTOH there are a bunch of games that give you small perks for meeting various conditions but don't make a big deal out of it if you don't. Marsupilami and Bonkers are two that come to mind. As the_wizard_666 says, a case-by-case approach seems warranted. We also allowed free use of options like lives, credits, etc. as long as difficulty was Normal/Medium or better. Even that's case-by-case, since some games only have Easy and Hard or other weird combinations.
  17. Yeah, that's all you get for Ishido -- not much of an ending. But emptying your pouch is essentially victory, with maximizing your score/getting a lot of "4-ways" (but not 11-ways!) as the only self-imposed challenge beyond that.
  18. California Games was another one. Goati (https://www.twitch.tv/goati_) discovered that the game has actual endings to the BMX and Skating games, so those should be achieved. He ended up getting those endings and getting the high score in all events. As far as we know the "Compete in All Events" mode doesn't offer anything special, i.e. you don't get a unique ending for winning in that mode, though we haven't tried savestating through a perfect game to verify it. Goati also "beat" the Menacer 6-game cartridge. None of the games have an ending, and Whack Ball and Ready, Aim, Tomatoes are the only ones with a somewhat clear-cut amount of content to be experienced (Whack Ball clearly has five levels before it loops; Ready, Aim, Tomatoes loops somewhere in the teens IIRC?). More about it here.
  19. I'd strike all of those, yes -- except maybe Miracle Piano which can sort of be beaten, as TMR demonstrated, though the consensus still seems to be to leave it off most "Can VGS beat..." lists. Irritatingly I used to have most of a Miracle Piano set and got rid of it. For Ishido, I played until I was able to use all the stones in my pouch, which is the game's end state. For Blockout, I cleared one story of blocks on the hardest level (10) in all three default modes and called that done. Trying to remember which other games caused problems. I know there are a few ones yet unbeaten that would, e.g. Championship Pro-Am which has no ending but loops after a finite number of courses (24 I think?). M-1 Abrams Battle Tank is another mystery -- as far as we can tell, the campaign mode expects you to pull a crazy marathon to get it done, but we don't know if you get a proper ending for doing so. Also, I can give you win conditions for all the tennis games: - Andre Agassi Tennis: win all 16 matches (in one sitting!!) to get a message from Andre - ATP Tour Championship Tennis: play three seasons to get the game's ending (I think you have to finish in the top 8 to qualify for the year-end championships, and win those each year) - David Crane's Amazing Tennis: win a tournament (4 matches) - Davis Cup Tennis: finish the season as world #1 to get the game's ending; you can skip the Davis Cup matches - IMG International Tour Tennis: win everything, get an ending - Jennifer Capriati Tennis: complete one loop, I think? You may need to do a second loop with the password it gives you (GRAND.SLAM) to access hard mode. Passwords aren't used to save progress - Pete Sampras Tennis: beat all opponents in career mode - Wimbledon Championship Tennis: complete four loops (win the tournament 4x, IIRC) It'd be great if you're up for taking a crack at either of those. I think you have to clear all difficulties -- in essence, all levels -- to beat Lemmings, and I don't think any of them are accessible out of order. Powerball looks likely to have an ending, yeah. It's supposed to be rather decent, IIRC. TNN Outdoors Bass Tournament '96! As per the manual: "You will need a password to play in the final tournament. The password will be given out on April 27, 1996 at 12 noon on TNN Outdoors Television." There's no way to access it in-game otherwise; really crazy design. Fortunately Tony H on Sega-16 was able to find the password -- JJJBASS -- in the ROM.
  20. If you have it in you to take Terminator 2 on, you could knock it out for two different websites at once. Imagine the glory! Feel free to ask me (I'm the one who runs the thread). Most of the games were straightforward but a few have no win condition (Blockout and Ishido come to mind) or a weird win condition. One game even needed someone to go spelunking into the ROM, as accessing the final level requires a password that was only broadcast on cable in the 1990s! Also note that there are older versions of the thread from 2013, when we first started the project, and 2014, when we added PAL/Sega CD/32X games to the mix; I think those are linked in the OP. After that point we just reused the same thread.
  21. Cool! I'll probably contribute a few games here and there. For the record, here are the 20 NTSC-U games that Sega-16 hasn't been able to take down yet (sports games have asterisks): AWS Pro Moves Soccer* Blaster Master 2 College Football USA '96* Cyber-Cop ESPN National Hockey Night* ESPN Sunday Night NFL* Frank Thomas ‘Big Hurt’ Baseball* John Madden Football ’93 CE* Lemmings 2: The Tribes NCAA Final Four Basketball* NFL Quarterback Club ‘96* NFL ‘98* Romance of the Three Kingdoms III: Dragon of Destiny SeaQuest DSV Shove It! ...The Warehouse Game Technoclash Tecmo Super Baseball* Tecmo Super Hockey* Unnecessary Roughness ‘95* Winter Challenge* And the five PAL games left: BodyCount Dino Dini's Soccer* International Superstar Soccer Deluxe* Jimmy White's Whirlwind Snooker* Man Overboard! S.S. Lucifer If anyone beats one of those, please consider cross-posting it to the thread at Sega-16: http://www.sega-16.com/forum/showthread.php?29149-Can-Sega-16-Beat-the-Last-of-the-Genesis-Sega-CD-amp-32X-Libraries-in-2018
  22. I've beaten the game before, but had forgotten how aggravating Bart vs. the Juggernauts can be. I got to the end of the game, successfully completed every event, and still didn't have enough cash to win the game! I guess you have to be near-perfect -- either that, or I'm forgetting some extra wrinkle in the gameplay to score a bit more. Either way, I'll probably knock it out within the next couple days.
  23. Not a victory post, but a clarification post: From beating Nobunaga's Ambition in 2016, I can confirm that this is basically what you do: pick a daimyo, kill everyone else, get the ending. Difficulty doesn't matter or change anything, which is pretty standard for Koei.
  24. Took care of Tennis on Level 4 (the highest difficulty): It took me about 5-10 minutes to get the timing back on serve, and another 20 to get the hang of the return game. The CPU's overhead lobs are nearly unreturnable as far as I can tell, so the trick is to keep him from triggering them in the first place. On serve that means serving wide and slow and hanging back until the CPU's about to hit the ball, and only then rush the net and hit a 1-2 punch to the open court.
