I'm in the process of trying to narrow down my collection to just the stuff I REALLY love, and figure out a way to showcase it.

I see my Evil Otto peeking-out there haha : )

Also - is that a Billy Mitchell signed-cart and a sealed Beamrider?

  2. Crisis Force [Nintendo Famicom - 1991]

Vying with Twinbee 3 for my absolute favorite Famicom-exclusive shoot-em-up. I've been sleeping on Konami shooters for so long, and this year has really opened my eyes to just how good they all are.

  3. Shoot - this thing is cool.

I may not like the Pikachu Nintendo 64 console, but something about this guitar is just the perfect blend of goofy and awesome.

@fcgamer - you're a guitarist, right? Do novelty guitars like this actually have potential to be good instruments, or are they generally just fun to look at?

I might have been the one who expressed appreciation for the Oddysey2 box art.

I absolutely love the 70s neon black-art poster aesthetic of the front covers

The spines couldn't be more dull... and they are annoyingly wide too.

I'm a fan of gate-fold covers and the compartment for the cartridges... (Which also rock) Love carts with handles!!  Just a nifty little package overall. The boxes do seem to be prone to getting dinged up tho'.

Gotta agree these look great to me, too.
(But that's speaking as someone who has never actually handled an Odyssey2 box or cart in person haha).

The game is a real weird one off that shouldn't be ignored which is why the price is toxic as F. 😕

Yeah - I definitely don't feel good about contributing to the toxic price, but if you've been following the "only 5 games to complete your collection" thread - this was the heaviest of my 5 and a few things lined up for me to splurge on it, so I have no regrets haha.

Yeah, looks legit to me.  It's also from Japan and, other than Tetris, 9 times out of 10, stuff from there is going to be in an 8 of 10 condition, or better.

Looks fine, I see nothing wrong with it from a legitimacy standpoint. It has some wear, and it's not uncommon for games from Japan to show up pristine. I've gotten multiple CIB games that survived the mail trip over here and you'd think they transported through time from the 80's straight from the factory.

And thanks for the input, dudes! Makes me (and my bank account) feel a lot better about the whole thing haha.

Anyone else able to weigh-in on the authenticity? @Splain ? @RH ? Anyone else well-versed in Game Boy carts?

Really fun game! I just made the achievement icons for that game's set over on RetroAchievements, so kinda funny to see it pop up so soon after over here.

Me: "Finally got my obscure grail that nobody even knows about!"
Gloves: "Not only am I aware of this game, but I've played and mastered it to the point that I set the game's achievement standards."

Jokes aside - that's awesome! I'll be happy just to beat the game on Easy, but it definitely strikes me as a good title for replaying with different challenge criteria.

  8. So I just bought my Game Boy "holy grail" (Zas) and it came in the mail today - but I'm a bit concerned with how pristine the condition is.

Can any Game Boy experts help me figure out if this is an authentic copy?

Here's a link to the sold listing on ebay:

  9. My parents never really played video games, aside from the Atari 2600 my mom had as a little kid (she liked Breakout and was slightly traumatized by the "dragon game" (Adventure)).

But they must've had some experience with 80s arcades, though - since they randomly introduced my sister and I to video games with a set of Namco plug-n-plays. Since then we've always liked playing Pac-Man as a family, taking turns to see who can score the highest. We also played a fair bit of Wii bowling together when that trend was going full-force.

These days my parents are both super supportive of my hobby, and they're happy to play games with me whenever I visit. They can't really handle games where you need to press more than one input at a time, so we stick to stuff like Frogger, Tetris, Donkey Kong, and shoot-em-ups where they can just hold the fire button and steer.

And my mom likes a lot of those word-games on her phone, if that counts haha.

  11. I'm a big rubber-suit monster movie fan, and I've been amassing a digital collection of Showa Era (1950s-1980s) kaiju films and tokusatsu series by running OBS to record them while streaming on Tubi and Plex (or playing a DVD on my computer). Sorta like the modern equivalent of taping cartoons from cable using the VHS as a kid haha.

The video quality is awful, but I like having the video files just in case these movies disappear from streaming services one day.

  12. I agree with a lot of these...

When I picture a 21st century gamer, my mind immediately goes to Call of Duty bros and World of Warcraft nerds.

Minecraft feels like the most ubiquitous game among the younger demographic for the last two decades.

And Wii Sports and Candy Crush are the poster-children for casual gaming and mobile gaming, respectively.

"Important" is debatable, but these are undeniably "influential".

Interestingly enough, I've had a copy of Nuts 'n Milk in my collection for a few years now since I bought a lot of some guy on Reddit; it was one of the included games but I've never actually played it. Maybe one of these days I'll dust it off and give it a try, looks like a fun game.

Not sure how far I'll get with the 3 lives though, 😄

If you guys are into games like Donkey Kong/Popeye and Solomon's Key/Bubble Bobble - then you'll definitely like Nuts & Milk.

And @Khromak - you can cycle through all the levels with the Select button to get back to where you were after Game Over.

Finished reading Stories by O. Henry, a collection of the author’s short works written between 1900 and 1910.

    Spoiler

    O. Henry’s fiction is defined by its twist-endings, which to my knowledge are often panned by literary critics for being “low-brow”. But I think dismissing the medium of short stories and the trope of twist endings discredits their value as fun, casual entertainment. And even still - that takes nothing away from the powerful themes and often very moving plotlines that O. Henry crafts. For example - “The Gift of the Magi” wouldn't be half as successful if it weren’t for its format. The brevity of these works and the punch of their climaxes only serve to distill O. Henry’s messages into exceedingly approachable packages.

And I think a key to the approachability of his stories is a mastery of archetypes. O. Henry instantly transports you to a defined place and time, surrounded by people you know, thanks to his reliance on stock characterization. Yet he still expertly develops those characters into their own personalities once he’s eased the reader into the comfort of a base familiarity. One of my favorite stories introduces a wild-west ruffian who scoffs at his old partner-in-crime for going soft after getting married and settling down, but O. Henry toys with our expectations of such an archetype by ultimately reversing the two principal characters’ roles. Another story even manages to imbue and develop familiar personalities to dollar bills as the plot evolves from their perspective.

Anticipating the climactic twist at the end of each story could easily spoil the surprises in theory, but O. Henry always leads toward a satisfyingly appropriate conclusion without betraying so much information along the way as to make the ending predictable. There’s such a range between tragedy and comedy that you never know if these characters will come-out for the better or the worse when all is said and done. I’d certainly say that I came out for the better by picking up this book, and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend some O. Henry shorts to anyone looking for some light, fun reading.

Explaining yourself was appreciated, but I'm still dumbfounded that anyone could call this movie "not very memorable."  It's got to have the highest quantity of memorable scenes of any movie ever made in the history of cinema, and easily the most quoted dialog of all time to go with it.

I know you're pretty young relative to the average age of participants on this forum - perhaps you were still a kid when you saw it for the first time, such that much of the humor went flying over your head???  🤷‍♂️

I watched this for the first time when I was in college - not because I was genuinely interested, but because I wanted to understand all the references people constantly make to this film.

It wasn't very memorable, but it wasn't bad either. I'm glad I watched it in any case.

How can you not remember the famous breaking of the fourth wall at the end of the movie? Or the killer bunny? Did you fall asleep?

The bunny rings a bell now that you mention it.

And I really don't know what to tell you guys... but it feels like you're mis-associating "not memorable" with "not good".
It was a fun movie and I certainly enjoyed watching it - I just didn't retain much for whatever reason. Maybe it's worth noting that this isn't really my type of humor, either. I'm usually into much more subtle, ironic stuff.
