@Jaxsbox was able to confirm that the aLBW E3 demo NFR exists. The back label is different from the standard NFR. They also identified my mystery OoT 3D boxes as store displays.

Hmm, I don't seem to have saved the image. This is the most info I have to go on.

I remember originally seeing it as part of a NFR collection photo on NintendoAge from Jaxsbox but I guess I didn't save the photo. Although I don't think you could tell much from the photo anyway.

Ah interesting. Do you have any photos of mass produced E3 carts like this?

It is not mass produced. Like Gloves said only a couple were made for E3 demos as far as I know. My list isn't limited to just mass produced games. IIRC, I don't have a good photo of it but I'll try to get the far away photo I think I have later

What about @0xDEAFC0DE talk about breaking games. Wish you would come back. I’m sorry for all the smack I talked about reading code 😔

Oh it definitely wasn't that at all lol. Life just got super busy and I really haven't had time for this forum anymore unfortunately. Occasionally, I peak my head in for a quick check, but I still don't really have time to come back to participate.

  4. It's been awhile since I clicked on one of these threads but I had to stop by and give my 10s. I LOVE puzzle games and the Portals were so well executed. Quite possibly they are my favorite puzzle games. I really should play these again as it's been a couple of years at the least.

  5. Apparently, the game will crash right before the 8,388,600 mark. At this point I'm not going to bother trying to figure out exactly how it works. Luckily, I was taking pictures as it was counting up to that mark every 50 points.

And for fun, here's what the crash looked like. The scroll registers got screwed up somehow.

  6. After playing around with the scoring system in an emulator, I found that it doesn't exactly crash when it hits 8,388,600 points. It will crash the next time points are added to a score over 8,388,600. This normally doesn't make a huge difference since it will trigger as the bonus is counting up. However, there is an option to press start to add the rest of the bonus in one frame. So, say your bonus is 2 million and your current points are 8 million. You can press start to achieve 10 million to finish the level without crashing the game. However, the next time you get points, the game will crash.

Just to double check the rules, is the goal to get as close to 8,388,600 without tying or going over? Or is it to get the maximum score without crashing the game?

You can't reach the kill screen. You must hit as close to it as you can without triggering it and stopping there.

Hmm, so if you hit a bonus that will put you over the kill screen, can we take photos as it's counting up to but before it gets to the kill screen? Or can we only take photos in between rounds?

It's worth noting that looping the score is impossible. The game hits a kill screen around 8,388,608 points (= 2^23). I've tried playing around with this in emulator and the bug seems to have different effects depending on when it is triggered. Sometimes it just freezes, sometimes the palette and other graphical things get corrupted. I haven't gotten around to triggering it on a real console yet, but I imagine the emulators aren't far off from what will actually happen.

So, what should be done if someone hits that score? Should we just take a screen shot right before the kill screen? If multiple people hit the kill screen is there a tiebreaker?

Still a bit curious on the rule clarification here. @BeaIank @guillavoie

  9. I took a brief look at the code while I had some free time on a car trip, so here's what I found (just how the piece randomness works)

    Spoiler

The next pieces are chosen in groups of 8. 7 of them are guaranteed to be the cross, the two types of straight pipes, and the four types of curved pipes. The last one is completely random (if the level is three or higher that random one will include the one-way straight pipes). Then these 8 pipes are shuffled randomly.

RNG manipulation is totally possible and should be fairly easy. The RNG is almost only called when picking a new set of pieces and when generating starting boards which are all totally controllable. The only exception I've found is that the RNG is called once per frame during the slash screens. However, it shouldn't take too long to mash through them on a specific frame to hit a set seed. After that, you can plan a route to your hearts content.

Also, it's not going to be relevant to anyone, but the RNG itself is extremely strange and unlike anything I've seen before on the NES. It probably has some patterns, but it actually seems to take way longer to repeat than other NES RNG I've seen.

The rule set for this year doesn't appear to address the whole code-diving situation at all, so I guess you're free to do whatever you want...

FWIW, I plan to share stuff immediately regardless of the rules

Was galaxy 5000 on the list you weren't familiar with? Incredible game. Much more than a racer

Yeah, I didn't know much about that one either. It didn't grab me right away from the gameplay I watched, but I'll save judgement until I play it

  12. Here's the updated combinations:

    • N-E-S and S-N-E-S (10): a3quit4s, TDIRunner, Strange, ZeldaFreak, Philosoraptor, Hammerfestus, DefaultGen, Renmauzo, Tanooki, Van Jackson
    • N-E-S and Sness (3): 0xDEAFC0DE, Reed Rothchild, Kguillemette
    • N-E-S and Snez (1): guitarzombie
    • N-E-S and Super Nintendo (8): Richardhead, nesmaster14, twiztor, FireHazard51, RH, fox, cj_robot, RegularGuyGamer
    • N-E-S and Super S-N-E-S (6): Tulpa, captmorgandrinker, scaryice, CMR, Bearcat-Doug, Code Monkey
    • Ness and Sness (2): Brickman, DarkTone
    • Ness and Super Nintendo (1): G-type
    • Nez and Snez (1): OptOut
    • Nintendo and Super Nintendo (8): darkchylde28, Link, LeatherRebel5150, DoctorEncore, JamesRobot, VGCollectaholic, docile tapeworm, spacepup

"N-E-S and S-N-E-S" is in the lead with 10, closely followed by "N-E-S and Super Nintendo" and "Nintendo and Super Nintendo" with 8 each. "N-E-S and Super S-N-E-S" has 6 peoples support and everything else is 3 or lower.

Super NES isn't even shorter than saying "Super Nintendo". Super NES people, explain yourselves.

I'll be honest, that surprised me as well. When I made the poll options, I initially left it off until I did a quick search to see if there were any other pronunciations I missed. Super N-E-S came up and blew my mind. It seems like the worst of both worlds.

I voted Ness and Sness, before realizing that's a lie.  It's N-E-S and Sness.

So, I'm the same way which is why I started this thread. I was curious how people mixed and matched the different pronunciations. Looking from an outside perspective, I find it a bit strange that I spell out N-E-S, but acronymize Sness. But saying out S-N-E-S just sounds like one too many letters for me and Ness just sounds wrong. I'm also young enough that I didn't grow up with these consoles hence why I never used Nintendo / Super Nintendo.

I quickly looked at the combinations thus far and although N-E-S by itself is already very popular, I'm surprised at the diversity in the combinations. N-E-S and S-N-E-S is the most popular with 4 people, but no other combination has more than two people.

    N-E-S and S-N-E-S: a3quit4s, TDIRunner, Strange, ZeldaFreak
N-E-S and Sness: 0xDEAFC0DE, Reed Rothchild
    N-E-S and Snez: guitarzombie
    N-E-S and Super Nintendo: Richardhead
    N-E-S and Super S-N-E-S: Tulpa
    Ness and Super Nintendo: G-type
    Nez and Snez: OptOut
Nintendo and Super Nintendo: darkchylde28, Link

I believe @0xDEAFC0DE was doing some of this when we were doing @Red's GB contest a couple years back. I remember Deaf was creating "human-possible" TAS's that he would share with us when each week ended, and I don't know how those were made, but it might be the kind of thing you're looking for. Maybe Deaf can chime in?

I'm pretty sure I was using Bizhawk to TAS those GB games. IDK how it handles Animaniacs though.

Taking a quick look at bsnes, I think you should be able to record input. Select "Tools > Movie > Reset and Record". That should record a movie file with inputs that can be played back and recorded with the play option. Of course I would suggest testing it out before doing the full playthrough.
