Check out the latest recap of development on my brand new NES game, Super Sunny World!
This update brings major perf improvements, and 2 new gameplay mechanics!

Are both of them going to ship as game only or just the total package like the old days? The push Tetris mechanic there seems pretty solid from a picture or two I saw. It would be interesting if it went more into the Tetris Blast style weeds of different pieces than the traditional 7.
Both games will ship CIB.
You can play the NES version of From Below at www.frombelowgame.com if you're curious. The GB game is the same, with the addition of a Versus mode using the Link Cable.

Today I would usually post my weekly "recap" of Super Sunny World, but the last week or so has been entirely dedicated to performance improvements which are hard to show. The game is running MUCH better, but it still struggles with 5+ enemies on screen.
Also, the cart hardware for "From Below Pocket" (the Game Boy port of my NES game, "From Below") is almost done, so I've started dedicating part of my time to finishing the print materials for that game. It's been mostly done since late 2022, but needs to be adjusted for final print specs.
But wait! There's more!
The key-art for Super Sunny World has been finalized, and I have kicked off a commission for the game's logo. I'll hopefully be able to share a mock-up of the box in the coming weeks, but for now here is a little tease of the key-art for the cover!- 2

I was thinking the same thing!

Recap for this week includes a whole new area of the game: the Cloud Zone!

Added Minkart Madness.
-
Updated up to April 2023. Added Black Jewel Reborn. That is a tough one because it had so many platforms. I might need to start trying to estimate NES sales for those multi-platform games.

Another week, another progress update video on my new NES game, Super Sunny World!
This recap introduces a few new moves to Sunny's repertoire, and gives a little glimpse at how levels will be strung together via the level editor.

Thanks for the suggestions @Tanooki. I'm still a ways off from anything close to an alpha, but I will for sure be doing some beta testing once I'm starting to get some real level content in the game.
If you're curious, here's my todo list to essentially hit alpha for "features". Of course I want to build beyond this core set of mechanics, and I also need to build some actual levels, but this is the list I'm working through for now:
## Task list ### Enemy Behavior * Boss * Fire Ring * Spiked * Lakatu * Bullets * Fire Balls * Squid * Fish * Hammer Bros * Hard shell turtle ### VFX and Art * Animated water ### Audio * Hook up SFX * Music setup per level type ### Meta Game * Coin display * Set Level Order * Cloud Level * Credits * Checkpoints * Timer ### Player Mechanics * Vines/Climbing * Swimming * Flower Power * 1UP * Coin Cache in Blocks * Hidden Blocks

I'd say some work was done even if slow given you have a working death restart continue scenario going so there is an actual challenge to it.
Thanks. Yah, some stuff like this doesn't look impressive but can be time consuming.

I haven't even really started looking at that, as there are so many obvious game breaking bugs to look at first. I need to get the game to a more complete state before I start looking for bugs in earnest.

Lots of info here, but it looks like the programmer was Shiru:
Shiru is pretty active on Twitter, so that might be a good way to reach out:

Week 5 working on my new NES game, Super Sunny World, has been a little slow.
The good news is that the soundtrack is now complete and we can spend most of this week's video previewing it! Enjoy!

Is anyone else playing skate cat on an analogue mini nt noir? I can’t get past the SJ Games splash screen even with 3.6v enabled which usually fixes homebrew games.
edit: @matthughson I noticed in a Google search you had posted about the Broke Studio PCBs and the mini noir, any helpful insight is appreciated. Nebs and debs works for me but it uses an old nram board. Project Blue and maybe skate cat use the UNROM?
edit2: interesting L’Abbaye Des Morts doesn’t work either and it has an earlier revision of the UNROM512
I haven't had any issues, but I don't have Skate Cat. I did play Dungeons and Doomknights on it though, and I assume it's using the same board, but maybe not. I would reach out to @Broke Studio. If there are compatibility issues, I bet they will know about it.

Alright, here's my actual NES homebrew collection. I have some GB, Genesis, and SNES but they aren't shown here (other than Super Cooked SNES):

I didn't realize it was for spin-off games on other platforms (I don't remember anyone mentioning that, and didn't notice it myself when reading the contract originally, which seemed weird). Did that change, or has it always been like that?

BTW Matt. I loved Witch N Wiz! Keep up the great work!
Thanks!

The license doesn't allow for making NES games?

@matthughson just a heads up on Broke Studios, I got an email from @dale_coop that the limited editions of Skate Cat were apparently shipped with no game flashed to them. Since they come from France, he had to get someone in the US to flash the games for him. I would be weary of using them simply because they are in France and most of your buyers will probably be US.
Food for thought anyways.
I appreciate the heads up! I can't speak for anyone else (and this doesn't diminish any issues Dale had), but Broke has been the absolute best-in-class in terms of manufacturing and distributing for me. I used them for both batches of From Below (NES) and they were amazing (carts for batch 1, and full CIB and Shipping for Batch 2)!

Finally home and can use my computer again, just watched that week 3 recap and that's insane. The music is on another tier, feels like from Sunsoft with love. The gameplay very SMB1 but then a bit more, not quite 3, but hell that's just 3 weeks work too which is insane all things considered. You are like eating and sleeping right? It's clear where things are done and yet to be done, like transitions from growing/shrinking, maybe some effect when you croak, little things really which is fine as it's largely functional. I stick with my hours old comment, this is on another tier than most of the shoddy homebrew going back a decade now and too many of the cheap hacks as well.
Thanks! You seem to get exactly what I am going for. Almost like "how you THINK super mario bros 1 felt".

Hopefully that means you aren’t sacrificing a physical run! Maybe you’re even working with Mega Cat or 6502! Or just kickstarting it! Either way the game looks fantastic and can’t wait to play
I'm going to try selling on my own storefront and distributing through Broke Studio.

Wouldn't it fit better if the girl on the cart also had pink hair?
Yup. Cart mockup was done before the game assets.

I've actually been working on this game for 3 week already, and you can check out recaps for those 3 weeks here:
