  1. Finished up Dragon Spirit finally. Really didn't enjoy my time with this one. Huge character sprite, super slow default movement speed and the speed upgrades are randomly dropped and very rare, really nasty corridors leading into most boss fights that are meant to drain you of any upgrades (especially the final one is brutal), no continues, extra lives are super sparse and only really awarded very late in the game. Much prefer the NES version of the game.
  2. Had a run that made it to stage 8 right at the end, but the hallway of retracting spikes did me in. This game sucks. Your sprite is enormous and is so slow. The speed up drops are random and rare so I almost never get to the speed I want.
  3. Any tips? I'm finding it quite challenging with the big hit boxes and slow movement.
  4. Battle Royale is finished. I greatly overestimated it's difficulty. I can get to the final Championship match (on Professional difficulty since it is required for the ending) every single time now. It was only the final Championship match that gave me much trouble and took about 7-8 losses (you only get 1 rematch after a fail and then you have to start from the beginning of the 15 fights) until I finally had a run straight through to victory. The CPU don't really care about each other much and all tend to target you so I just learned to protect my back and learned when to run and heal strategically. In the final fights against 4 of them they would sometimes bunch together which would allow you to take someone out really early in the fight when they couldn't find room to retreat.
  5. Battle Royale may not be as tough as I anticipated. I had two attempts tonight that made it to the Championship match and I just got overwhelmed by 3-4 Fighters at once. Just need a good run where I can get Mongo out early and I think I've got it. Hopefully tomorrow.
  6. Not a streamer, just persistent. I do record all my playthroughs though. Here's R-Type: It definitely wasn't easy. So far it's the hardest game I've beaten on the TG16. It took tons of hours and so much memorization (and a little luck in that last run). It's not something I'd go back to for fun. I much prefer several other shmups on the system that take much less effort.
  7. Had a really lucky run just now and R-Type is done! As usual had a flawless run up to Stage 6 and then promptly smashed myself into the first wall in the whole level. The last Stage is incredibly difficult if you don't have both options available and very easy if you do. I only knew about options on Stages 1, 4 and 7. Since I died at 6 I was expecting to go into Stage 8 with just one. I didn't realize that during the boss fight in Stage 7 that amongst all the junk that is getting tossed at you it can also throw the occasional power up. In fact I didn't even see it drop me an extra option during the fight and only when the fight was over and the game automatically moves you to the center of the screen did I pick it up by default. Boy was that exciting to go into Stage 8 with and thankfully I didn't screw it up.
  8. Can make it to stage 7 pretty much every run now. Can typically make it to 6 without a death. 6 is super frustrating because it's not a hard stage. I often die just because I misjudge my size due to the extra equipment on my ship and just accidentally run into a wall.
  9. Had a run on R-Type where I didn't lost a credit until stage 6 (and that was a very dumb death of me driving into a wall). Finally got to stage 7 and even made it to the checkpoint on my first try!
  10. Can also back up @DefaultGen that Motor City Patrol isn't something to be scared of. You basically just have to keep driving in a circle on each map for nearly 4 hours to beat it. The monotony of just how boring it is is the only challenge. Don't ever fire your gun because you can lose very fast if you hit a civilian instead of your intended target.
  11. Sinistron's last 2 levels are tough, but the game has unlimited continues which is one of the best possible tools to help someone beat a shmup. R-Type's limited continues makes it significantly harder than Sinistron imo. I've got the first 3 stages down REALLY well now in R-Type. Rarely if ever lose a life on any of them any more. Stage 4 I'm around 50% of the time making it through without a death as well. As long as I get to 5 with the Red power ups I do good, but if not I'm able to recover in that stage after a death now that I've figured out how to beat the boss with no power ups. Stage 6 seems all about memorization and I'm starting to get to the end fairly consistently, but haven't quite figured out the final room yet. I looked up a video of the rest of the game and Stage 7 looks pretty frantic if I don't enter it with some options and power ups so that'll likely be tough, but 8 looks very simple as long as you don't miss your shot to get your guns into the boss when it opens up.
  12. Messed around with R-Type tonight to see what I'm dealing with. Not too terrible so far. Lots of power ups, 3 continues, additional options, can use the one upgrade as either an option or a shield on the front or the back. I made it to stage 5 without much trouble. Unless there's something crazy in one of the final levels it's just gonna be a matter or learning a few enemy patterns and knowing which power ups are the most useful in which areas.
  13. Awesome! Maybe @RetroMichelcan add Turbo CD asap otherwise I'll start a thread for them so you can get started ahead of me while I'm finishing up TG16. Do you have the full Turbo CD collection?
  14. I'm not worried about that. We were learning the win conditions as we went which is why I feel like threads like these are so important. And it's probably debatable too. I think the multiple loops should count when the ending is different, but the NES thread doesn't follow that in many cases. I wouldn't argue that the game isn't beaten, just my opinion.
  15. I've got 2 more games to beat for my list that the rest of you guys already beat and then I'll start working on those final 10. If someone wants to play something just let me know so I don't start it up ahead of you. I'm thinking I'll start working on R-Type or Battle Royale since I have a hunch those two are going to be the toughest ones left.
  16. I meant add it to this thread so that all the Turbo stuff is together. I can start the Turbo CD thread myself if you don't want to combine them though.
  17. Destiny of an Emperor is great! Only really tough part is the final bosses which can just just have some really bad rng so they might take a few attempts.
  18. It has been a long time! You gonna play some Turbo CD games with me this year?
  19. @RetroMichel Would you be ok to add the North American Turbo CD games to this challenge as well? I'm only 6 games short of owning that full library and as soon as I'm done with Turbografx 16 I'll likely start playing through those games as well and I'd be happy to have help from anyone else who wants to join in with that too. I'd love a spot to talk about those games as I play through them as well as get a list like we are building here of all the win conditions. If you're not up for maintaining the thread beyond just TG16 that's ok though, I can start my own thread. Just thought they'd go nicely together all in one place.
