  1. Does Spielberg still have these? Has it been confirmed that these actually exist, or are they just some sort of urban legend?
  2. I respectfully disagree with your opinion here. I never participated in the NWC (for context I was three years old when I first started playing NES, was four in 1990 and my older brother is on the spectrum so something like the NWC we never even learned about until years later), but when I first heard about the event, probably around 1998, I was amazed. I saw photographs, and the whole thing just clicked with me, it felt like something I would have liked to be a part of. Sadly, such hype and promotion just doesn't occur anymore, well it didn't really occur back in 1998 either. It's sort of like how my grandmother attended the world's fair, and the things she saw and remembered from then. I would have loved to do that too, but sadly we just don't do things like that anymore, at least not on such a memorable scale with all the hype and pomp and circumstance. So that's why I chose the NWC. I'd likely prefer the gray version tbh. I'll most likely never be able to afford one, and even if I could, unless I were super rich, I doubt I'd ever feel the desire to drop that sort of cash on a single shelf piece, as I'd rather go on holiday or something. That being said, it is a cartridge that I've wanted for decades, and I think it is safe to say that this cartridge means more to me than just something that is cool or trendy, as I was into this stuff way before that even became a driving force.
  3. I own a ton of bootleg games, but to contrast it and put it into perspective a bit, I also own more or less a licensed Famicom full set, as well as over half of a Sega Mega Drive (Genesis) full set. Yes, I will play my bootleg games and official versions interchangeably, Super Mario Bros. is Super Mario Bros. and I am not getting fussed whether I play a real one or a fake one when I own both, well I likely own ten or fifteen copies. That being said, it is a very rare occasion where I play a bootleg game of which I don't also own an original. That's part of the reason that I had the foresight to go for a complete Famicom full set back in 2014 or so, just to respect the developers and companies that made the games that I love so much. But yeah, roms and emulation and stuff, I don't do that at all, despite having an everdrive. For my top picks, it is really hard to say, but I would definitely put the NWC on the list.
  4. Tearing down a new house is stupid, but the company isn't concerned about the stupidity of it, rather they are just looking at it from the economical side. I'd love to see the company incur such costs. I've seen other stories where stuff like this happened, and I'd be pissed.
  5. Within the first two pages of the forum: HABit Carnival Shooting (famicomworld.com) Over Obj (famicomworld.com) Chouyoku Senki Estique, another impressive STG homebrew (famicomworld.com) Over there basically the only homebrew or indie releases people are talking about are the shrimps, and before then it was when everyone was complaining about the format used for the music carts.
  6. Yeah man, I know about Recca as I own it. My point still stands though. Gloves feels that Blade Buster is superior to the others, and he provides support for his feelings. He mentions (indirectly) the fact that the game is a caravan shooter, as opposed to a plain vanilla shooter. To pull it off well, you need to tightly craft the game, and that's what the author of Blade Buster did. It's similar to writing a short story or something even smaller than that. It has to be carefully crafted, every single word counts, every single punctuation mark, etc. Can someone take a short story and scale it up to a novella or a novel? Sure. Could someone take a caravan shooter and scale it up to a regular shooter? Sure. Similarly could someone take a novella and trim it down to its essentials and turn it into a short story, or turn a shooter into a caravan shooter? Absolutely, someone could! But to do it well takes careful planning, and a lot of considerations. It would be interesting to see what the author of Blade Buster would have created if his, her or their objective was to create a regular shooter rather than a caravan shooter. Just something to think about.
  7. It's likely a similar situation as short stories, short short stories, novels, and novellas. There will be different conventions in how tightly the game (or story) is crafted. With short short stories, every word matters, whereas in a novel, not so much. So different scale comes into play here with caravan shooters versus regular shooters. That's why although they are similar in some ways, just as short stories and novels are both similar in many ways, there are also differences to consider.
  8. That's because the game was designed as a caravan shooter. Were the others designed to be caravan shooters too or were they just designed to be technically and graphically impressive shooters?
  9. Oh I never said that being a caravan shooter would diminish the quality of the game, rather my point was that it's like comparing guavas, pomelos, and oranges. They're all quite lovely fruit, but they're just quite different things. As such, Gloves might find pomelos and oranges to be inferior to guavas, if his personal preference isn't as keen towards citrus fruit, but that doesn't mean that pomelos and oranges are shit by any means, or should be seen as inferior, as they're kick ass in their own way.
  10. Ah I see, I guess some of the earlier homebrew that was done using Family Basic also wouldn't count then. I saw the vast majority of people voting on games released over a decade ago so I didn't realize that there would be a timeline cutoff point. I mean, neither indie nor homebrew have anything to do with the term "aftermarket" in terms of their meaning.
  11. Wasn't Blade Buster designed to be a caravan shooter though? Basically it's like a NWC cartridge, only as a shooter. When reading Glove's assessment of the game compared to the other recent shmups coming out, I immediately thought to myself that some of the criticisms were likely because he was comparing his preference for caravan shooters to regular shooters. I mean, if I prefer the setup of the NWC cartridge, Super Mario or Rad Racer by themselves would pale in comparison...
  12. Here's my list of indie and homebrew game picks, in no particular order. A Hole New World Abbaye des Morts Gruniozerca 3 Huang Di Lin Baned the Opium Master Chu & the Drunkard Hu Skate Cat Thunder Warrior Thunderbolt II Trophy
  13. Can anyone name any game that is better than NES Super Mario Bros. 3? Nope.
  14. Also another question for @Seth : it's not clear, are we supposed to be voting on our favorite indie games or our favorite homebrew games? Or we can vote on either?
  15. That's quite strange as there's a ton of talk on other forums about the shmup offerings coming out. I'm not a shrimps guy personally (I prefer roaches), but surely some of the recent shump homebrews are worthy of a vote? Never said or alluded to any game being better or worse than Blade Buster. You totally missed the point.
  16. The game was released in 2011 or whatever, as a ROM, though from my understanding the author did give people their blessing. I feel it's sad that we've been doing homebrew this long yet in 2024 so many of the games being mentioned were around in the NA days. To me it demonstrates that either homebrew hasn't come that far since about 2014 or so, or that people aren't playing the new games. And that I feel to be quite sad.
  17. Have you tried any of the homebrew, indie, or aftermarket shooters that have been released over the past few years, generally coming out of Japan? Seeing Blade Buster on the list is really sad, imo. Let's throw Battle Kid up on the list too along with Solar Wars and call them hidden gems.
  18. On a different note though, it would be nice to see votes for more recent games than Star Keeper and other old ones that have been around forever
  19. Oh I didn't see that rule, in that case please disregard my vote.
  20. Vote: Mr Lee's Alishan Tea Collector Unique theme, fun gameplay reminiscent of early Famicom / NES games, with hints of Donkey Kong 94 thrown in.
  21. Sadly Gettysburg isn't so interesting to me without Chinese on the box. The thing is, I grew up from around that area, hence why I was initially drawn to it. Still interested in Castlevania though.
  22. Ok maybe my inbox was full when you sent me a message, I just looked today and didn't see anything, sadly, though I still will apologize for the seemingly rudeness on my part, though it wasn't intentional. Anyways, things on my site (www.maliscash.com) are for trade. If there was something else that you wanted, I have other unlisted things too, I'm sure you know my collection better than me
  23. I know I've shown these before, might as well show them again.
  24. There's a bootleg of this game that's been translated into Chinese. The box focuses on Hitler.
