  1. If you like old games and old people, you're in the right place.

No, I don't get self-conscious about what I play because I don't particularly care what other people think. The best part about getting older is finding what you love and genuinely enjoying it, regardless of what others think. So go ahead and play Frogger to your heart's delight.

I find it hard to believe that there are 4 Purple Capcom MM6 CIBs that have been graded when (as far as I know) there are ZERO known CIB copies.

Several loose carts, something like 3-5 manuals and one sealed copy is all that has surfaced.

Anyone ever seen a CIB? If these exist surely someone has shared a pic somewhere.

Yeah that's not correct haha...I know of one sealed copy and he wants to remain anonymous...as far as box's and manuals go...I've never seen another box other then the sealed one...I've only seen two manuals...but the boxes and manuals being very rare makes sense to me from the info I've gotten of what took place back then...the same goes for the one known sealed copy...it makes sense why they simply are not out there...now the carts themselves...they're out there to be had...I'm not saying millions of copies haha...but enough that they do come along every now and again 😁

That sealed copy yo, F***e literally got the biggest win ever

I spent a lot of time looking for evidence of other CIB copies when I was creating my variant list and also found zero evidence for their existence. I'm not saying the pop report is wrong, but I believe only a few boxed copies were created as proof of design and we're never actually produced in mass and sold. I'm guessing they released a cart/manual only version in South America, maybe sold directly to used games stores rather than regular retailers. I think the boxed copies that do exist were probably in the hands of designers and/or executives and have only changed hands in private sales.

Isn't the hardware itself (inside, minus the screen) basically the exact same hardware that they used for the Super NT and Mega NT, if not the NT Mini as well?

I have no clue. I'm not much of a tech specs kind of person when it comes to this type of stuff. I just know it feels sturdy and reliable and the screen is great. Maybe someone else can weigh in on the internals.

Interesting.  I just had a lot of fun with Ori, but I easily prefer Hollow.  Different strokes I guess.

And I have zero qualms with that. Everyone should play what they love. I think there is some level of objectivity when you focus on the technical aspect of gaming, but in general it's a highly subjective hobby and I love that part of it. I just hate typing "in my opinion" after every statement. Everything I write is my opinion! So hopefully no one takes any offense to what I say.

That's libel and I won't stand for it!

When I was young and dumb I used to think this movie was a 9/10 classic. I haven't watched it in 15 years, but I'm guessing it's more of a 6/10 for 2023 me. I think the chances of me ever watching it again are slim to none, but if I ever do, I'll come back and update my score.

I was playing Super Mario Advance 2 on the pocket on cartridge and it’s really nice so I decided to install some extra cores and grab some roms for testing out that functionality. Wow it is really good. Downloaded a game for GBA and it ran solidly, got a 700 NES ROM pack and played a few of those, really smooth. Got a TG16 ROM pack and played those a little and really smooth. The screen is gorgeous. Really nice device. Can’t wait for more cores to really test the size limits of my 128GB card. Oh GUI windows pocket updater for the win.

I agree with some others that the form factor is not the best, but the hardware itself is phenomenal. Love the ability to unlock more cores as well.

  7. For me it all boils down to fun. Gaming is something I do to experience joy. That can be broken down into different forms of fun, but it's really that simple. If a game is not fun, I don't play it.

Now, if we want get a little more academic, I could probably come up with a few categories of fun.

    1. Simple Joy (Uncharted, Grand Theft Auto, Mario)
    2. Mentally Challenging (Myst, Tunic, The Witness)
    3. Dexterity (Celeste, Doom Eternal, Super Meat Boy)
    4. Competitive (Rocket League, Halo)
    5. Pure Difficulty (Dark Souls, Hollow Knight)

Obviously there is a lot of overlap between these different types of fun (particularly dexterity and difficulty), but it provides a nice jumping off point for discussions on why I enjoy certain games.

    Uncharted 4

    Spoiler

So, clearly a powerhouse of production value, storytelling, and cinematic thrill rides.

Gameplay?  It's good enough, but not what these are known for.  And my very hazy memories of 2 and 3 are telling me that the formula is pretty much untouched here.  Climb a ton of things, fall through a ton of things, shoot a ton of guys.  It's fine enough.  Those things are a vehicle to deliver the story and the thrills.  I can accept that.

It also makes me want to pull out my copy of Blood, Sweat and Pixels and reread the chapter on U4, because it laid out what a nightmare this was to develop.

I loved that game. For me, Uncharted 4 is the pinnacle of the big budget, linear, action adventure games that Sony does so well. This is a Summer event popcorn flick that goes down easy and let's you completely shut your brain off for a few hours. Gameplay is standard fare, but you get those bombastic set pieces (the drive through town and over the bridge was my favorite in 4) that are ridiculously entertaining.

Uncharted games will never be among my all-time favorites, but I love the experience of playing through them. Still need to boot up Lost Legacy at some point.

Oh shit haha. My favourite game of all time, Metal Gear Solid. My copy didn't have the case, so I had to find a guide for the codex number. I did use it a few more times but the game is on a whole other level.

The meta stuff in that game is so great. Thankfully I had (and still have) the actual game with the case, so I was able to figure it out. There is actually a great reference to the Psycho Mantis boss fight in the recently released game, High on Life.

I'm with you though, I usually try to avoid looking things up since I get so much satisfaction from solving puzzles. That being said, as I've gotten older and busier, I have no qualms about pulling up a guide to see if something in game is worth doing. Spend ten hours pixel hunting to get some slightly better armor? No thanks.

Another honourable mention. Theres only ONE game I've had to use a walkthrough guide for, or look up the answer. Still proud of this.

Come on, man. You're gonna drop that tease and not even tell us the game? Spill the beans!

I think of all the Metroidvanias I've played in the last 5 years (Dread, Samus Returns, Ori, both Axiom Verges, the Shantaes, the Alwas, Blasphemous, Carrion, Tales of Iron, Bloodstained, Salt & Sanctuary, Cave Story, The Messenger, God knows what else), Hollow Knight is the game coming out on top.

I'm just not feeling it. I just beat what I presume is the 3rd boss fight and I'm finding this game quite tedious - to the point where it's becoming a grind. It's actually quite frustrating somehow even though it's not overly challenging... Hard to explain. Might start fresh when I have a few hours uninterrupted to play. I think I've been playing around 6 hrs now and feel like I could get back to where I am in 30 min.

I think it should be more acceptable to dislike Hollow Knight. If you can power through to the end, it's a very cool experience, but the game has some serious faults, especially early on. I think people are too forgiving of it's problems since they tend to go away as you're hitting hour 10 or 20. I would go so far as to call the early parts borderline bad due to some baffling and punishing design decisions. In my opinion, a great game should be great from the start. Discovering new things should be just as fun as mastering them. Personally, I'd rather play any number of other Metroidvanias and games like Ori absolutely smash Hollow Knight.

I did a longer write up somewhere else about my issues with the game and I'll share it here if I find it.

Anyways, more power to people who love the game, but I certainly wouldn't feel bad or wrong for disliking it.

    I know the feeling 🙂

Although I didn't hear that they are very buggy, is that true for all of the releases?

I believe at least three of the six games have game-breaking bugs which make them unbeatable without a patch. Obviously most of us will have no problem updating the games, but it sucks having unfinished versions of the games on the cart.

  13. For some reason I can't resist these NIS Prinny collections. I've heard the games are super buggy and maybe even unable to be completed, but I'm a sucker for this stuff.

Here are the three games my son got for Christmas (all for less than a single new game when I was a kid, somehow) as well as Observer for the collection.

Origami King is the best entry in the series

That seems to be far from the general consensus. However, if that were true, then I wouldn't even bother playing any other games in the series because Origami King was terrible. In fact, I would argue the battle system is even worse than Sticker Star. The rest of the presentation saved it from being a total disaster.

Thankfully, it seems like a lot of people consider the original and TTYD to be classics, so I'll probably check those out at some point.
