Bat top isn't getting as many votes as ballz, but I'm still curious.

People who voted bat top, how do you grip your stick?

Man I'm surprised this thread has been able to stay clear of innuendo so far.

from the left side towards the top or a bit over the top but still hanging off to the left. For some moves it's a loose grip where I smack it to the right with my hand and back to the left with my thumb. I tend to be a bit more aggressive on a bat top since the dead zone is bigger.

Ya 😕 that’s what I found out. I had a sanwa. It was nice but like you say it just like hitting a d-pad. Even if you had a pressure sensitive stick I don’t know if any game is programmed with that in mind?

You had games like Blitz that used the 49 way stick so there were 3 distance zones per direction. Other than that, Space Harrier used a true analog flight stick. Star Wars Arcade (80s) used an analog yoke and the 90s ones used analog sticks.

  3. This discussion is still going on eh? RE the charge: It's most likely in lieu of an ongoing licensing since it's more or less inevitable that some of their code and work will be used in all works produced using NESMaker.

Bat or ball is aright, long as I've got an octagonal gate. Square gates just feel werid?🤔

They do but they make it possible to do a 4-way / 8-way switch. Nothing worse than trying to play pacman on someones rig that didn't know the difference and have him not move right due to hitting 2 directions at once.

I'm likely gonna mod my Asteroids Arcade1Up here soon and I'm on the fence about the setup.  Leaning towards ball top.

I foresee a lot of 2 player fight games getting played.  Any argument one way or the other for fighters?

I would say go ball top as the Sanwas and Seimitsus have that quick response that makes them a top choice among the competitive crowd. The only reason to go bat top, and I mean like a Happ bat top since thats what I find most people tend to mean by that due to those being in pretty much all of the American arcades, is being used to it. For example, on a bat top, when playing fighting games I tend to do double taps or fast back and forth motions by more or less smacking the stick from the side. The Sanwa style ball tops have a much shorter throw and feel much more clicky feel, vs the springy feel of a bat top and as a result, people tend to grip and use them differently.

I actually just received my two bat tops today for my Sanwa JLF sticks, ordered on Amazon. I really prefer the bat tops to ball tops.

Oh that's pretty cool. You get the shape of the bat top with the clicky short throw of the Sanwa.

I like how people always tell me how much vinyl is than a CD because its analog but yet never talk about cassettes.

You would be correct. It’s kinda funny because the CD is capable of better quality, but the desire to maximize loudness at the expense  kinda ruins that.

Vinyl has a physical limitation where if you tried to achieve that level of loudness, the cutting lathe would jump the grooves when making the master. That built in hedge against the loudness war is what leads to the better quality. Vinyl as a medium seems to impart a sound that people, myself included, seem to enjoy. But it does have drawbacks.

Also, the angle of the groove matters for quality. The outside grooves are a more gradual angle than the inner grooves. The stylus makes a better contact with the groove towards the outside of the record and as a result sounds better. This is why records during the vinyl era tended to have the singles as the first track of each side.

Cassettes on the other hand were just a compromise all around. Low track width coupled with slow record/playback rate (1 7/8 ips vs a minimum of 7.5 ips for professional open reel formats, more commonly 15 or 30 ips) lead to poor audio quality. Again, it does impart a sound on the audio that some people may enjoy. But you are actually better off with mp3 than cassettes, and mp3 is not a quality format.

I did on the previous page. Cassettes are objectively crappy, but they do have a sound that they impart on the material that some people might enjoy.

  9. Bat just because I'm US based and that what we mainly had here. I can see the benefits of the ball top, and would actually use one if building a panel, but I just have more experience with bat so that's how I gotta vote.

Tongue of the Fatman (a pre SFII fighting game on the PC)

I remember being about to buy this, from a Marshall's of all places, and ended up getting a boxed shareware copy of the brand new original Doom instead. Had to jump through all sorts of hoops and make a dedicated boot disc to get that to run on my IBM PS/2. Ended up playing TOTF years later tho. Pretty cool game.

I'm gonna go ahead throw Sierra adventure Codename: Iceman, the original Battletech/Mechwarrior, and Heart of China into the mix of obscure games as well.

  11. Moved about a 3 hours minimum drive from where I grew up. Aside from some people, I don't miss it at all. There was just nothing there for me. Plenty of others did the same. It's an odd feeling going into a business where you were bound to run into people you knew every time, and not recognize a single person. Being a stranger in a place you once called home.

  12. Stage - Bubble Man

Robot Master - Plant Man, jk (🎶Plant man knows where the plants will grow🎶) , actually Nitro Man cuz he morphs into a biker on a crotch rocket.

Song - Bubble Man or Wily Stage 1 from MM9

    Weapon - Metal Blade

I take it you’re also from Jersey.

    Pork roll or Taylor Ham?

Taylor Ham (incorrect) if you're from North Jersey, Pork Roll (correct) if you're from South. Taylor is a brand of pork roll. I happen to prefer their competitor Case's, but Taylor is still really good shit. Also, us SJ folk get another breakfast meat that comes across from PA, Scrapple.

    Strongly disagree:

That one is great but I still like the MM3 one better. I think it's the solid Green/Blue sides that box the background into what looks like a little scrolling window that throws me off a bit on the Excitebike profile.
