  1. After the epiphany of @Gloves about “not buying infinite games” and my attempt at The Backlog Challenge I thought I would arrange my games by either A) I bought for the purpose of playing B) Really want to play C) have played and will probably play again.

    Right now I have limited shelf space and tend to rotate stuff in and out that I don’t really play.  So, I thought get the games out I really enjoy or really want to play and focus on them.

    It’s odd but I find this exercise refreshing.  I’ve got a long way to go.  I’ve packed up two medium size tubs so far.  I’m not saying I’ll never play the games I put away.  They are lower on the priority list right now, though.

    I just wanted to share and figure you all would appreciate it.

    I didn't see this mentioned, but Umihara Kawase is one of my favorite SFC games - it's super cute, fun, and has a unique grappling mechanic.  It's a simple puzzle platformer game, but I have always enjoyed it!

    I'm not sure if it counts for this thread, as it has technically been eventually released here, just not on SNES.  There is a digital release now, and then also the game Umihara Kawase Fresh! for Switch.

    But if you are looking for specifically console-specific exclusives, it's a really fun game (in my opinion).

    Thanks!

    is there a difference between the SFC version and Fresh on the Switch?  I try to steer clear of digital releases as much as possible.

    @Lago I'd recommend Binary Land [Famicom] if you like action puzzlers. It's a neat mirrored maze game where you control two penguins at the same time.

    I also like Raiden Densetsu [SFC] over Raiden Trad [SNES] because the configuration menu allows for extra continues in the Japanese release. And I know most people don't like the Super Nintendo Raiden port, but I still think it's fun in a mindless way (as far as shoot-em-ups go).

    Thanks!  I’ll add Binary Land to the list too.  Most of the games I’ve got on my wishlist are reasonably priced, which is a nice surprise.

    I don’t remember ever seeing much legit console stuff in the Philippines. Mostly Chinese bootleg Famiclone, GB/GBA and PS1/PS2 stuff.

    Wonderswan was the only legit thing I ever remember seeing at retail years ago. it’s a very poor country, so like 95% of the population can’t afford legit games

    I was curious about this as well.  Although I did see some YouTube videos of a couple shops.  I figure worst case scenario I will have fun looking and will just order some games from eBay.

    which I already did a couple.  😂

  5. I’ll be in the Philippines and am going to check out some game stores.  What are some games I should look for that would be fun to play?

     I prefer games that didn’t get released stateside, unless they are so different they might as well be another game, and games that aren’t to text heavy for story as I won’t be able to understand it.

    fun, quirky, whatever you think is awesome.  Let me hear it!

    Thanks in Advance

  6. Finished Atari 50 today.  I loved going back and learning about the history of Atari.

    Atari was right on the cusp of “before my time”. I don’t have the nostalgia for it that I do for Nintendo. That being said some of the games are just hard to play. It seemed like Atari was stuck in the Asteroids/Missile Command era and just couldn’t move past it.  Which is a shame. There was so much potential there.

    Definitely would recommend for anyone wanting a good look back at video game history.

  7. Not on my list but I did a run through of Super Mario Bros. with the kiddos.  We went through every stage, it was fun.  The kids really enjoyed figuring out the maze castles, which is something I never really liked much.

    Well, most of the titles were already released or going digital before they signed with LRG.  So I think this is just a promotion for all of those collectively with the LRG name attached.

    This is what I thought, outside of distro titles that they bought the physical rights to digital games and handled that.  It just surprised me when they said shop our digital titles.

    Target delivered my copy of Advance Wars Reboot today - been playing it and the visuals look nice - they have put in really good voices also.

    This is also on my extremely short list of games to acquire this year.  Didn’t realize it was out.

  10. People that have way more experience with the Switch library than I do, do Switch cartridges typically contain the whole game where you can play and keep playing straight out of the box or do you have to download and update most of them to be able to keep playing?

    excluding the code in a box games.  I know those are download.

  11. Man it has been a minute since I have posted.  Managed to knockout my secret Santa gift this year!  Chip N Dale Rescue Rangers.  Big thanks to @JamesRobot

    This game was a big nostalgia trip for me and just overall a ton of fun.  I was getting my legs under me when my son came darting by the tv with a cartoon like stop and said, “what’s that?!”

     I told him and he immediately wanted to play.  So, we played through the game on co-op.  Made the game even more fun!

    It’s funny remembering this game.  Some parts I remembered like the back of my hand and other parts I kept trying to figure out when they put that in there.

    Since I did so amazing in 2022, I should probably carry over my success to 2023.  Sure, I didn't actually *finish* any of the games, but I started several and made some progress there, so I still consider it a win in my book 🙂

    I'll have to think carefully about what I can actually accomplish, and will update this when I can!

    Ok, I think I have a list.  I've partially played some of these and never beaten.  Need to go back and finally make it happen:

    * Psychonauts 2
    * Alwa's Awakening
    * Rakuen
    * Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice
    * Paper Mario: Origami King (Switch)
    * Nier: Automata (PS4)
    * Panel de Pon (SNES) (JP)
    * The Last Guardian (PS4)
    * Moonlighter
    * Papo & Yo --- beat 02-12-23!
    * Transistor
    * Pyre
    * Jade Empire
    * Control --- beat 01-09-23!
    * Alan Wake --- beat 01-18-23!

    Jade Empire is an absolutely awesome game and I wish they would come out with a sequel for it.  Amazing story with martial arts action that improved on the combat system of KOTOR.  I can't recommend this game enough.  When I was doing an "evil" playthrough it hit me in the feels hard enough that I stopped playing.  I don't do great with "evil" playthroughs.

  13. I'm marking Stacklands as complete.  I don't think there is an actual end to the game and I've pretty much done everything I wanted.  i was super pumped at the beginning but the game turned into a bit of a slog in the mid and, what I am assuming, late game.  Still definitely worth the $5 if you like card/roguelite/survival games.  I ended up sinking close to 18 hours into this game instead of my anticipated 7.  It did something right, haha.

    On the brighter side, I have ended up spending roughly 24 hours more than I anticipated gaming this year.  I'll give some credit to the backlog challenge for that as it has given me a clear defined goal to shoot for.  Also I wanted to spend more free time gaming instead of getting distracted by other things I'm not as fond of but end up being more of a time sink.  Glad to see I am actually doing that!

  14. Managed to finish Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney tonight.  Breaking this game into chunks is absolutely what helped me get through it.  I really enjoyed the game but that last case was an absolute nightmare for me in some spots.

    It’ll be a while before I start another one.  Still really glad I finally finished this one.
