  1. 2K15 came with my PS4 when I bought it and I had a lot of fun with it.  I don't play online., I really enjoyed the MyCareer mode and the MyGM mode.  I got really ticked off at the reliance on virtual currency in MyGM as I could buy the team for 50 VC, which I somehow earned through the game, but by the time I got their the server was down and ... well I could buy the team but couldn't.

I also have 2K16 which I played for a few minutes and didn't really give it a chance.  Mainly because my player was so God awful I didn't think he deserved to be in the NBA, and it felt like a pay to win scenario.  Full disclosure I like playing games but I am actually not that good at games so I understand that some of this could have been a PICNIC error.

Anyway, I've been getting the itch to play again and wondered if I should look at grabbing a more recent release for the PS5?  Really appreciate your thoughts.

Man, Vagrant Story has been on my backlog since the day it came out. I wish Sony would put some better games into the "classic" catalog for PS Plus or whatever it's called now.

I wish I could say I can’t relate, but I can.  It’s on mine as well.  I tend to not look at the backlog.

    Square Enix RPG (Harvestella?)

    Return to Monkey Island

    Persona 3 Portable

    Persona 4 Golden

    Persona 5 Royal

What kind of RPGs specifically? Classic turn-based? Action? Strategy? The PS2 especially has a pretty varied RPG library with lots of great options.

From what he has told me about his play history he’s wide open as long as it’s RPG, but I’d say the RPG he played the LEAST was tactics type games.

  5. I've got a friend that has never played a PS1 or PS2.  He's a huge RPG fan and, more or less, asked what games he should look into.  So, if you were in my spot what games would you recommend?  And would you recommend they play in a certain order?

  6. Nintendo Switch: Triangle Strategy.  I really like this game, but man some of the story sequences are long.  Still I'm a sucker for tactics games and this one plays like a refined Final Fantasy Tactics.

Nintendo DS: Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney.  Still trying to figure out why I put this down so long ago.  My guess is I got stuck on some part and just gave up.

PS4: Mega Man Legacy: Playing through this with my kiddo.  We've beat 1 - 5.  Currently working on 6.  I absolutely spam the ever loving crap out of the save feature on this.  I still get frustrated at parts, haha.

  7. Oh man I am terribly indecisive about this.

RetroCollect: It's an app that has a website I've never used.  I like it, but you do have to pay for it.  You can buy a system or bundle.  It never did everything I wanted it to do, and it had some bugs at one point.  I think they have the bugs worked out.  I still use it, albeit sporadically.

Gameye: It's a free app.  Adding games was super easy.  I think it uses PriceCharting for its prices.  Something turned me off from it, but I can't remember what.  Probably just some feature I wanted or didn't like.

GameValueNow: It's a website.  It kept crashing or wasn't available, and I don't think it has been updated for a while.  I loved the interface though.  I quit using it because of its lack of availability.

PriceCharting: I guess this is one of the most popular.  Has some nice features, some features you have to pay for.  As others have said the prices can be off, but this is what I am currently using in tandem with

The old fashioned spreadsheet:  Yup.  It's a spreadsheet.

  8. Date 2/27/2022

    Kids Age: 7

    Game Name: Transformers Devastation

    System: PS4

I realize it has been a while since I posted one of these.  My kids have discovered Roblox and have spent the majority of their gaming time playing that.  New game every 5 minutes if that's what you wanted to do with it.  Way different than when I was growing up.  You had a handful of games and had played them so much you could beat them blindfolded.

This game was a little bittersweet for me.  My son's gaming skills have gotten to the point where he can handle most of the game on his own.  I'm happy to see this, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit I'm gonna miss the "Dad help me with this" times.

There were a couple of those, though.

I've got to say that this game was the Transformers episode that I wanted to be in when I was a kid.  The game felt like you were playing through the cartoon series from the graphics to the voices, even the scene transitions.  It did a fantastic job of smashing all those nostalgia buttons.

It absolutely hooked us right away, too.  The tutorial had you fighting freaking Devastator.  I mean if that doesn't have you chomping at the bit for more, then Transformers might not be for you.  I also appreciated the fact that there were plenty of helpful "push this button to do this" hints that popped up on the screen.  Especially after we had let the game sit for a couple of weeks.

The game has a good assortment of Autobots you can choose from, but we primarily stayed with Optimus Prime.  We did play with Grimlock for a little bit, and tried out some of the others, but we always came back to Optimus.  You fight a ton of the Decepticons too.  Wonderful assortment of characters.

The game goes complete old school on the last stage when you have to fight all of the previous bosses leading up to your final confrontation with Megatron, which was awesome.  In this last stage you have to fight Devastator and Menosaur at the same time, which prompts Optimus to say "This ... will be difficult."  I found that hilarious.

The only time my son really needed help was the two battles in outer space with Starscream and Megatron respectively.  The camera was absolutely disorienting in those battles.

There is a weapon upgrade system that we completely ignored.

The game clocked in at about 7 hours and each chapter was about an hour with tons of clean stopping points throughout.  It really was laid out well.  I felt like this game was a passion project.

favorite line from my son at the beginning of the game, "Daddy is his name Possumus Prime or Awesomeus Prime."  I cracked up.  This was his introduction to Transformers.  He's officially a fan.

On a side note I bought this game used from GameStop, and it was a formal rental.  Only PS4 rental game I have ever seen.

That's the tecmo bowl clone people were losing their minds over being so good awhile back isn't it?  I saw that LRG got a run of #DRIVE for sale too which up until Switch was only an ios/android release.  I grabbed it out of curiosity, I think refined for a non pay as you go format it could be fantastic given how it works.  On mobile it's a very slow grind unless you pay, and touch controls just never cut it either.

It is.  I’m hoping they refine Retro Bowl somewhat as well.  Mostly optimize it where you don’t have to pay to advance things, or speed up said advancement.

motion controls aren’t really my thing, so a controller will be nice.

Right now the game plays a lot like Great Football for the SMS as in you only play offense.  So, it’ll be interesting to see if defense will be added.

Kinda depends on how you define fullset. Ive always seen it as one per title. All the collectors editions and re-prints are just variants

I view it this way as well.  6 different cover variants of Asteroids vs Meteors?  Pick the one you want and check the game off the list.

Yeah you kinda hit the nail on the head, that's how it normally works. The Switch collecting crowd is made up of a larger number of people newer to collecting as far as I've observed, and it's one of those hot-and-cold things where a lot of questionable decision-making happens in the earlygoing. Like wild excitement and fervor at the start and then "whew ok this is a lot to keep up with😓", and thennn bail altogether and sell everything once they can't keep up and let go of the FOMO. Many hares in the game, few tortoise'.

Another added variable in Switch full-set collecting that separates it from how we would normally collect full sets is the massive abundance of limited and collector's edition games. You'd think that little barrier of entry alone would be enough to hinder most from the pursuit. Like, sure you can collect all 2,000+ physical games, buuuut do you have a copy of Crayola Horsie Adventures with the little stylus pen that only 200 copies were made of, and only sold at select Chapters locations in western Canada during the summer of 2019? Or all seven versions of Streets of Rage 4? It's gonna wind up being the hardest console of all time to collect a full set for (and probably one of the least worthwhile to, given how the shovelware releases are really starting to hit a stride) by the time the life cycle of the system is over. A full set in 2024-25 or whatever would look insane.

To me, going for every variant of every game for the Switch is just to much.  I do think going for every game is achievable though.

Not initially on release.  I don’t understand pursuing it that way.  Most games still go down, initially, in value.  Then again, if that’s how people want to spend their money more power to them.
