Just finished Star Force. The difficulty spikes like crazy right in the middle of the game and then relaxes a ton and never quite gets as hard as the middle again. Very weird.

I don't remember where I got before, but it must have been that hard middle part.

Good to know I have a chance of beating it one day, if the difficulty goes down.

While I'm addressing ya, you and @WashYourFacewere talking about stepping up to Fester's Quest. Were either of you seriously considering doing it soon for this thread? I was probably going to do it again in the next week, unless one of y'all are ready to step up and try a first-time clear.

I don't have the time to devote to it now. Just something I want to try and do some time. Go for it, if you want.

Another thing that didn't bother me that much, but was definitely a hindrance to my enjoyment of the game, were the olives. Since I died constantly (see my comment above about how I suck) I regularly had 0-5 olives, meaning every time I had to buy something I needed to spend about 10-20 minutes farming easy enemies for olives.

Hey if you aren't grinding for exp/gold, then you aren't retro gaming 😉

Just finished battle of Olympus. God damn was this another frustrating one. The knock back when you get hit is endlessly frustrating from the first boss all the way to the final dungeon. Most people compare it to zelda 2 which is frankly insulting. It's got some similarities but it's very dramatically worse. On the plus side it has decent music, good graphics, a nice big open world and lots of powerups. Just very frustrating and you don't usually have a lot of resources to deal with the challenge

I love it! I used to have it as one of my top 10 NES games. But that's probably an exaggeration. It's got some flaws for sure. I might be blinded by nostalgia.

Goal is done after more tries than Id like to admit to on the final game against England. I didnt do any research on the players and teams abilities. Usually for games from the 90s, brazil is a pretty safe bet. But englands players were a ton faster than mine and that made it really tough. They can catch me from behind at will and if they get passed me dribbling the ball they are just gone. Could be final game or just team selection or maybe both. Either way, first time clear and I had a great time with it

What game? Oh, you mean Goal! <--- the ! means you have to shout it

I beat this back in 2014(? I think) as USA. I don't remember a whole lot about it, except feeling like it should be worth more points, because it's not easy. I think it was worth less back then.

Funny you say that, I'm considering beating Fester's Quest this year as well. I never played it as a kid, but played through a few bosses last year. The bosses are just so clunky I couldn't bring myself to try to make it all the way through at the time, but it's definitely one I want to do.

Unlike Blaster Master, which I'm pretty confident I can beat once I sit down and do it, I'm not that sure about Fester's Quest. I've made it about halfway through before. Yeah, too many flaky parts and tough bosses. I suppose I'll probably beat it, but it's going to take some time and dedication.

Just finished blaster master. Very fun game, top 25 imho. I'm surprised it was still left since so many people have it in their top X lists. This was my first time beating it, it seemed so daunting before; it's definitely a walk through or heavy exploration game. The controls are SUPER tight, until the last section when you have the ceiling climb then it's obnoxious.

I have it on my personal list to beat this year (along with Fester's Quest and Ultima III). My friend beat it back in 1990 or so, and I never got around to doing it. I haven't tried it yet this year, because I know it will take me some time.

I'm done with the first 8 missions of Conflict. It's a really frustrating game, since the battles (especially air) come down to random chance. It's like playing chess and making the right move and then having your piece randomly explode half the time.

Yep. That game pisses me off.

BNB has a few rough spots, but I still think it's one of the better NES baseball games. Did you enjoy it? What's next for you?

It's a good baseball game. Unlike RBI and Bases Loaded, I can't find a pattern that is a "guaranteed win". Seems like there's lots of random chance involved, based on the stats, which is fine. I actually lost a few games. There's also some weird quirks, like sometimes the other team's runner hangs out by 2nd base but not tagging up, so you can get an easy out. And annoying how it throws to a fielder who is right next to you sometimes when you're trying to throw to a base. But it's pretty decent.

Tomorrow I will probably start Athletic World, I've got my Power Pad out and ready to go!

I did have to practically memorize the game before I was able to beat it, though. Not only memorizing the mailbox targets and the hazards, but remembering exactly how, where, and when I would make my moves to hit the mailbox or the enemy with my paper.

I agree, it's all about memorization and repetition. It's been awhile since I played it (I'm starting to forget stuff from over 5 years ago, I guess) but yeah just know where the obstacles are and the best way to deal with each one. Avoiding them completely, if you can, is usually the best option. Save your papers to be used as weapons/defense.

    Paperboy 2 is done.

I think I'll start Wrecking Crew next. If anyone else is playing it, you should let me know.

I'm not, but have you played/beaten it before? It's mostly fun and not very hard but there are a few levels that are really frustrating.

I think I've played it about 5 minutes total. Maybe I should try it since I actually liked the first one.

Since we're being transparent, I played it about 5 years ago and got to the final boss and haven't beaten them. I still have my save game and at some point plan on loading it up, and grinding if I need to, to finally beat the game. It won't count for this thread, but when they start a "beat every game in the 21st century" I'll be ready.

Those are both relatively easy, yes. I'll probably do HotL in the next couple of days unless someone beats me to it.

Heroes of the Lance is the sort of game that you have to hug a walkthrough to get through semi-painlessly. And that's not everyone's cup of tea.

Battleship is just too fucking long. It's what, 35 or 40 missions? And if you don't get a lucky shot on the submarine once it's introduced, those missions just take foreverrrrrrrrrr. But since I'm apparently a masochist, I've been thinking about starting this one in the next week or two unless someone wants to get a first-time clear on it.

True, if you play Heroes of the Lance without already knowing the way, or using a walkthrough, it's pretty rough. I don't find Battleship too painful to go through, maybe I'm just a Battleship fanatic. Or maybe I've been desensitized by other games like 10,000 innings of baseball.
