    So from what I am seeing it appears that this was never submitted with the map. I am assuming the map came with every copy. Is there not a way to tell if an item is complete?

    It shows the map is in there.  On the back of the wata label in the 5th pic or whichever it says GSI: Legend of Zelda Map

    I tried to search for NA threads, but I wasn't really able to find anything. I'm getting the feeling that all the old threads are being removed from Google. Looking on bootgod, the earliest right bros I saw had the latest date code of 9013 which was the last week of March 1990. The earliest ROM chips on bootgod are from December 1989. With the time period established, the codes actually do look like dates in the format YMMDD.

    91208 = 1989 December 8th
    91219 = 1989 December 19th
    00119 = 1990 January 19th

    Most of my variant experience comes from Zelda variants. Unfortunately, none of the NES zeldas have these codes, but I remembered that Link's Awakening (original and DX) have similar codes. My LA DX box has the code 991028 (1999 October 28th), this matches the date code on the cart (9943, 1999 October 17-23) and the manual (the -1 manual was the first with the solid E esrb rating that was introduced around September 1999, the -1 manual is also pretty uncommon meaning it was quickly replaced by the -2 manual). The code of the LA DX was 6 long but this ebay auction of the original LA (https://www.ebay.com/itm/264552165499) has the code 30607 (1993 June 7th) which is 5 digit code a bit before the release date. And then I found this site (http://www.game-boy-database.com/game-ML-3206-USA.html) that calls the code the "box date" along with hundreds of scans that, from what I've seen, prove this to be true.

    I'm pretty sure at this point that these codes are the date that a print run was started. It's a bit strange when comparing to chip date codes as those change weekly, but I assume that the box printing process has a reason why this was changed less often. So, returning to the SMB 3 codes, it seems that 00119 is the third print run and not the first. I went and found ebay links for the three codes (see below). The Wata post mentions that the 00119 code has "a very subtle white hue around the nintendo logo on the back of the box." I don't really see this in the first link for 00119 but I see a bit of white below the logo in the second. This appears to be more like an offset during printing instead of a design error across an entire print run. In fact looking at the back of the box in the 91208 link, the seal and the blue text also look a little offset as well. While looking through ebay, I found a half-dozen 91219 boxes, two 00119 boxes, and I stopped when I found a 91208 box. I trust Wata when they say 00119 is the rarest (I only have a small sample size after all), but it doesn't look like 91208 is the most common either.

    91208: https://www.ebay.com/itm/133221972723
    91219: https://www.ebay.com/itm/133256610069
    00119: https://www.ebay.com/itm/333445412714 and https://www.ebay.com/itm/264542760640

    So, I guess it's up to @austin532 whether he wants to add them to the list. Personally, I don't think I'll be adding these print run date codes to my Zelda variant list. I already don't differentiate when it comes to cart date codes, and there are other outwardly visible production marks that I am also ignoring (stamped codes on cart labels, mold codes on cart shells, etc.)

  3. Anearth Fantasy Stories for the PC Engine.  There's been a few jp rpg's translated for the system but not this one for whatever reason, and since the u.s. side was very light on rpg's I've always wanted more.  The very last game Hudson published for the platform and you can absolutely tell as it looks gorgeous.  One cool thing about your character development in the game stems from your choice at the very beginning.  You're the orphaned baby in the snow in front of the church there and depending on who you choose to adopt you, determines the family you live with and ultimately what skill set you will have.

  4. PC Engine for me.  I love grabbing random lots off ebay or wherever and testing each one not knowing a thing about em.  There's so many games on that console that are unlike anything else.  For those of you with an everdrive give Gekisha Boy as shot for an example of what I mean.

  5. With all the wata/heritage hype I run into this dilemma daily.  What if this inorganic speculative bubble turns out to have legs and minty hang tab boxes are worth a fortune?  What if 2019 is my last chance to buy a nice Metroid for less than 4 figures?  Me weighing the pro's/cons is a struggle sometimes.  I've been around long enough to know that you'll always have another opportunity to grab something, but it's rare that the next opportunity is cheaper than the previous one.  So to answer the question I will let the FOMO win if I'm positive it's something I would grab further down the road whether I buy this one or not.  There aren't a ton of things that fit that description but I'd rather just have it now than hope it's cheaper the next chance I have to grab it.

    That's not true. Prices have gone up a lot, but it's not worse off than say the SNES which has experienced the same hike.

    There are a few super pricey titles, but that's true for any platform. A bunch of those aren't really worth bothering with either.

    Hell one of the major must-own titles for the system, Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, has practically not increased at all since I bought my copy 17 years ago!

    Yeah it's funny how this one has always been around $150.  Back in the day Rondo and Radiant Silvergun were the two most expensive imports and neither one has increased that much.

    Having owned both and imported optical on both, you will not a sliver of argument out of me on that.  Also the Saturns RCA ability was ghosty garbage too but for some realm of black magic within the NEC consoles RCA was sharp, even today is sharp on a LCD panel too without the ghosting or blur which I find strange as my Core Grafx is just crisp.

    I've been saying that for years!  NEC composite just looks better than everyone else's somehow

    I would have to imagine it's definitely on the earlier ports or they would seem biased towards the NES. I wouldn't mind specificity though like first console appearance, first American appearance, etc. when it's not actually the first appearance. Although in that case you'd really have to stretch specifics to put any kind of importance on NES Donkey Kong. First US Nintendo-developed console appearance of Donkey Kong? Like the John Wick comic book isn't the first appearance of John Wick, it's the first comic appearance of John Wick or Hulk 181 isn't the first appearance of Wolverine, it's the first full appearance. If you can narrow it down to a single adjective before appearance, maybe I'm OK with it!

    I'm glad you brought up John Wick, I didn't know that but I was trying to think of an example in that vein.  Where an appearance might not be first but it is the first collectible appearance.  I don't want to call arcades and home consoles different mediums like a movie and comic since they clearly aren't but that's kind of what I'm going for since they also aren't quite the same.

  9. And what about less famous first appearances, does anyone have a graded Gradius?  Does it say first appearance of Vic Viper?  I can kind of get with Arcades "not counting" for this sort of thing because it feels different.  But I'd also ask why we even need first appearances, just to copy comic collecting that way?  If they are going to keep this up then I fully expect my Turbografx copy of Fighting Street to say first appearance of Ryu and Ken.

  10. My favorite part is how it says "first appearance of Mario" and then follows that up with "port of the 1981 arcade game".  Ports should definitely not get first appearance credits, what's the point of labeling something a first appearance if it wasn't actually that?  I could accept first appearance in a home console or some variation like that.  But as you pointed out what about the earlier verisons of the port?  Will the same info be on those labels?  I think they're rolling out Atari soon so that will be interesting to see.

    They make protectors that are a little bit taller and wider but the standard size fits perfectly. Especially if the shrinkwrap is still on the box which makes things a little tighter. My only complaint is that they scratch up pretty easy from normal shelf wear. So you need a protector for your protector.😄

    Yeah I mean the width is fine, and is the important part if shrink is still.  But like I said the height is my issue with them.  I've bought games before that have had them on that fit better.  So they're out there somewhere.

  12. I'm sure this has been done before but what are everyone's favorite plastic box protectors for NES?  I have some from both Video Game Box Protectors and Retro Protection and both of them are a little too tall for my liking.  Anyone use Kollector Protector or have somewhere else they prefer to get them from?

    Do any of these companies make anything less than the gaudiest, most overladen with controls, nonsense control panels??

    spacer.png

    5 joysticks?? 7 buttons per player for players 3 and 4???

    You call that Gaudy?  Hold my beer.....

    mamalien.png.1ba7d7c31828ae4ae229979e70babe45.png

    But to be fair that 5th joystick up top is for play with the spinner next to it, and all the joysticks have 7 buttons.

  14. I can't vouch for them personally but we have a local place that people seem happy with.  Northcoast Custom Arcades https://www.mameroom.com/webstore_home.asp has a ton of options from diy kits to completely finished machines.  Tons of options as well, upright, cocktail, pedestal, custom graphics etc...  It ain't cheap but if they're looking for a more hands off experience it might be worth checking out.
