  1. @Kid Dracula I actually like Starship Hector. But I never managed to beat the sixth level. Good job! I beat Iron Tank.
  2. I beat Muppet Adventure. What a shitty game. Why hasn't there been an AVGN episode about this one yet? That pink monster in the fifth level caused me to lose many lives and two game overs. Only later did I find out how this "duel" actually works: when it comes at you and tries to push you away, you have to take a small step back and wait until his arms are stretched out. Then you approach it and push A to "attack" him with your feather. This pushes him away without pushing you away too.
  3. Damn, I was just about to post that too. Anyway, congratz.
  4. I just beat Flintstones: Rescue of Dino and Hoppy. It took some time to get used to the sloppy controls, some blind jumps and various other quirks. The ice level had me close to giving up on that game, but after that I started having fun.
  5. Kirby's Adventure is done. I've played this once before, but never made it far due to loss of interest. Now I'm happy that I've finally got around to beating it. This is the first Kirby game I have ever finished.
  6. I beat Rad Racer II again and have just started a playthrough of Dragon Quest 2.
  7. StarTropics is done. Another classic Nintendo game that I have never even played before. I enjoyed it quite a lot despite a few unfair or annoying passages. Some levels were also really really tough especially the final level and its boss battles had me swearing a few times.
  8. Phantasy Star is a Master System game. It's definitely worthy of being added, but at least not a Genesis/MD game. I don't know how much of a challenge you like, but Dynamite Headdy and Contra Hard Corps are easier in the Japanese version and therefore maybe a bit better. If you like dungeon crawlers or rogue-likes, then I would recommend Fatal Labyrinth as well. Also, Galahad is an interesting and unique platformer that not many people know of. Mystic Defender may be worth considering too since it's pretty decent and extremely weird (in a good way). Saint Sword is another good action platformer that isn't well known. Then there's Slap Fight MD as another good shmup, Snow Bros. as a competent Bubble Bobble clone (if you care about something like that), Undead Line (if you want a brutally difficult shmup similar to Gaiares) and the imho best Action RPG on the system Tougi-Ou: King Collossus. As for the NES I could recommend The Krion Conquest or rather the Japanese version Magical Girl Doropie, if you like games in the style of Mega Man. Holy Diver might be worth a mention too as it's similar to Castlevania. Another lesser known game on the Famicom would be Valkyrie no Bouken: Toki no Kage Densetsu, which is similar to The Legend of Zelda. Image Fight is an okay-ish game on the NES, but I would rather play the much better PC Engine version. Anyway, the lists look really good so far and I'm sure that you'll have plenty of good games to play in the future.
  9. If Plok! counts as obscure than that would be my pick. Also, Breath of Fire 2. It may have been somewhat common in the US, but it was and still is quite rare in Europe and I never met anyone who had heard of this, let alone have a physical copy. Then later, through the wonders of emulation, I got to play a bunch of SNES RPGs that were never released over here, such as Seiken Densetsu III, Chrono Trigger, EVO, 7th Saga and a few others. There was also a time, when no one over here knew what Shin Megami Tensei or Persona was, not even the store clerks at game stores. I had to spell it out so that they could find it in their computers and tell me whether they still had it somewhere.
  10. I just beat Kid Icarus. I can now understand why it usually plays second fiddle compared to other classic Nintendo games. With the extreme difficulty, the constant grinding for points and hearts as well as annoying enemies like the thieves or the eggplant wizards this often felt more like a drag/chore than an actually fun gameplay experience. I can't believe that a company known for being kids-friendly would include such mean-spirited elements into their game. I played the GB version last year and thought that one was a bit more streamlined, but maybe I'm remembering it wrong. Anyway, a well-deserved pain point. Ha ha! @nerdynebraskan I actually like the simplicity of Dragon Warrior/Quest I as well and it's sort of the comfort food of JRPGs. Maybe people back in the day didn't even mind the grinding and probably enjoyed that since you are constantly rewarded with something, whereas in many other games you would just end up hitting a brick wall and either had to get good or give up. But the Super Famicom and GBC versions both improved so much over the original game, that this one feels a little outdated. But anyway, if it counts I might try to complete some of the other Dragon Quest games as well.
  11. I just finished Dragon Quest aka Dragon Warrior. I played the Japanese version, which according to this site should be identical regarding the gameplay. https://dragon-quest.org/wiki/List_of_version_differences_in_Dragon_Quest_I#NES_Version I hope that this still counts? Initially I thought that this would be a quick and easy playthrough, but I previously only ever played the remakes and never knew just how grindy the original version was. At the end I spent almost four hours grinding until I got to level 20 and even then I barely beat the final boss. While walking through the final dungeon I ran away from most enemies and tried to preserve my magic as much as possible. Despite that I was on my final few hit points and I didn't have any useful healing spell left. Just one more hit by the boss would have killed me. This was quite nerve-racking. Not sure though whether I should attempt the other games as well.
  12. I recently beat a few games on the SNK 40th Anniversary Collection on the Switch, namely Guerilla Wars (NES version), Crystalis and Ikari Warriors 2 (NES version). And in November and December last year I also beat Fatal Labyrinth and Phantasy Star IV, respectively, on the Sega Mega Drive Classics collection for the Switch.
  13. @scaryice I don't see Double Dare as a beaten game. Did my submission not count or was it missed? OH BOY! I just beat Fisher Price: Perfect Fit, Mickey's Adventure in Numberland and Mickey's Safari in Letterland. I did the latter two games on advanced, which seemed to be the medium difficulty. All of these are pretty bad and I feel sorry for any kid that was gifted any of these isntead of a good game. However, MAiN is the only edutainment game, that I have played so far, that at times actually felt like actual game. I doubt that any kid would have learned something from this, but at least the controls are fine, Mickey's sprite is big and decently animated, the voices are understandable and the music is kind of decent at times. Also, notice how Donald looks like a thug!
  14. Thanks Kid Dracula! My name on NA was the same, but I was relatively new and I had only participated in the NES challenge late last year. Btw. I just finished BreakThru as well.
  15. I did two levels of Defender II, played a round of Championship Bowling, won at Double Dare and completed all four levels of Fisher-Price: Firehouse Rescue. I feel stupider for having played the last one...
  16. I finished one loop of Sky Shark, i.e. 5 levels! This game is tough, but I also quite enjoyed it. However, it's a bit flawed as well. You can barely see the enemy projectiles on the screen and at times they seemingly merge with the background. Also, your hit box is a bit too large and wonky. I think with some tweaks this game could have been more popular. It also reminds me a lot of Toaplan shooters. I had to double-check that this was actually published by Taito. I'm trying to beat Crystalis next, but that game is a bit longer. Maybe I can still clear it over the weekend.
  17. Guerilla War is done too. It would be an extremely tough game if it wasn't for the unlimited continues. Thanks to them it was easily possible for me to beat this game, but it still felt a bit like a repetitive slog. At least the game was technically much better than Ikari Warriors I and II.
  18. I re-beat Ikari Warriors II. Somehow I was struggling even more this time, even though I now know the game pretty well. But I constantly did some stupid mistakes, that ended my run, or I struggled with Joycon drift. Joycons are just terrible for these old games so I finally gave in and bought a Pro Controller. It was an amazing feeling holding such a good controller in my hands and I beat the damn game on my first run with it. But now I'm sick of IW II and will probably never touch it again for a long, long time.
  19. What about games on compilations, like the Genesis/Mega Drive Classics or SNK 40th Anniversary? Do they count individually like Final Fantasy Adventure above or only if all are beaten? And what if there's a distinction between console and arcade version?
  20. Okay, thanks. It says that Galaga loops after stage 3, but I played it until I got a Game Over at stage 12 or so. I also played Balloon Fight for the first time ever and quite enjoyed it. It's simple, but addicting.
