It was the second of the three Naxat Soft shooters for their Summer Carnival (a competitor to Hudson's Summer Caravan.) The other two were Spriggan and Nexzr Special, both for the PC Engine.

I played the hell out of Nexzr when I got my PC Engine Duo a few years ago. Spriggan is also a gem. I have never played Recca despite hearing so many good things about it over the years! This contest also gives me a chance to break this out...wait for it...

  2. Nice! Glad you had some fun with it. The damage jump-up was how I normally got through the pit jump section as the last pit jump normally causes you to collide with the green boomerang enemy. I enjoyed watching you jump back and forth in the pit- truly a low gravity man. Which leads me to wonder if in fact it was intentional?

Actually no.  You can literally stand in one spot and never get hit.  Of course if you want to score points, you have to move..

Misunderstanding. No, you don’t even have to move to score points in this spot. Just jump and you’ll never get hit as far as I can tell so far.

  4. I had high hopes this would be similar to the DK contest- a game I’m familiar with but never played much and certainly never for high score. That ended up being really fun despite the luck factor on the barrel drops.

Mario Bros would be much better if there were a time limit. Also the scoring is kind of strange. It makes sense to be awarded more points for clearing multiple enemies quickly and you are. 800 first enemy, 1600 second, 2400 third and so on. But often you’ll miss out on the coins you get for clearing enemies if it finishes a stage. It would be more fun if that factored into the score. But it’s irrelevant anyway if you farm icicles or fireballs.

What is the difference between game A and B anyway? I didn’t notice a difference.

Lol are you even playing or just trying to see how much of Doug and Bert's time you can steal? No one else will roll the score anyway. I think id rather clean out my garage or do some major household chores that takes hours. At least there would be some variety in it

Edit: @Kid Dracula will roll it too. He will probably figure out some stupidly crazy way to do it in like 10 min though

I played for 20 minutes or so last night and wasn’t feeling it. But now I feel I have to put in somewhat of an effort! Perhaps I’ll suffer through some tomorrow. Definitely enjoying the WWF style banter of Bert and Doug.

There's nothing poorly programmed at all about the last level (it's actually a very well designed game IMO). As MeganJoanne has pointed out, you have to hijack and use the enemy vehicles in order to traverse through the last level. This was by design. The walkers can high jump.

It is an excellent game and nothing poorly programmed at all as it turns out haha. I did hijack the enemy vehicles but there is none to be hijacked on that first pit with the high up ledge. Without knowing the robot walkers can high jump I still managed to figure out a way. If you time your jumps perfectly you can actually hop out of the pit twice and make the jump to the other side. I guess it's irrelevant as nobody would use that but I'll try to upload a video to show you what I mean.

Okay, made a video, hope this helps. Unless you want to watch the whole thing, fast forward to around 7:07. I ran out of time prior to that not paying attention, didn't feel like stopping the recording and starting another so I just kept it rolling. Anyway, starting with no power ups, used only what the stage offers, got through it, though because it has been ages since I played this, took me over a dozen tries to accomplish it. I owned this back in the day and played the hell out of it then so used to be really good at it, so when I saw the question I was like, hmm, could have sworn I got through it multiple times with nothing to start, but I had to be sure, so took up the challenge to find out for sure.

Ahh ok I definitely missed that the robot walkers could jump on their own with precise timing. Very cool! It didn't make much sense to me that you could get trapped like that. I actually did find a method through that first pit but I don't think the programmers intended it to be done. With exact timing (I think it's done to a frame or two) you can jump over the pit. When you land in the pit, you can spring back up with the right timing. I ended up finishing the game that way today but it took me a looong time to be able to figure out. Perhaps I'll post a video so you guys can see. Thanks Megan!

@Kid Dracula might have something for you. but his endurance hhas yet to be seen 😁

I'll give it a shot. Don't think I'll be putting that much time into it though. And hey! 6 loops of gradius gets no credit? 1 life on adventure island until world 7? Haha ok I'll try to do better!

  9. Do trades still go down? I got into a funny one with a friend where he needed a couch and we were getting rid of ours. We were gonna figure out a price but funds were an issue for him. We worked out a trade that ended up completing my Shatterhand cart! I haven't added a new piece to the collection in a looooong while and this brings me down to 35 boxes/manuals left (20 something carts). Tell me about some of your best or funny trades over the years.

  10. I finished Low G Man for the first time a couple months ago for the "Can VGS beat every NES game in 2020" thread. It's actually quite an enjoyable title! I was playing it again for a quick run through and ran into a problem in the final stage 5.2. In Low G Man you build up your power-ups for higher jump, better freeze gun, longer/stronger spear and lose these power-ups when you die. When I finished the game a couple months ago I had built up my jump from stages 4.3 and 5.1 and did not die and did not run into this issue in 5.2.

What happens is the level starts out with 2 robot enemies flying at you. Freeze them and spear them for bombs (every time, there is no chance of any other items). Then there is one more larger enemy you can kill for a chance at one of these items . After that there is a big pit that you can not jump across. You have to jump up super high to a ledge that you can only reach if you have level 3 jump. So if you don't have level 3 jump you're pretty much screwed. I did figure out you can do it with level 2 jump by freezing one of the 3 enemies at the height of their jump and jumping off them up to the ledge. Level 1 jump JUST misses even if you execute it perfectly. SO considering the first 2 robot enemies always gives you bombs, even if you get the much needed higher jump item from the other enemy that is still not enough to get up to the ledge.

The game does give you passwords however, so instead of giving up I used the final password which brings you to level 5.1, a short drop from the sky and a boss fight. Surrounding the boss are 5 minions that appear and reappear. You can hit them with the spear for items. So if you got really good luck you could collect the 2 higher jump items needed to pass level 5.2. So I sort of found a solution but still felt it didn't make sense. Why would the game programmers trap you in a way you can not escape? So I went back to level 5.2 powerless and attempted it and somehow found a solution! I think it's probably a glitch but maybe the developers did put it in for a reason. Before I divulge does anyone know what it is or have a solution for this poorly programmed end of the game?

  11. 8 Eyes completed. A quirky part of the game is after you defeat a boss, you sit down and have a cup of tea with them. Even the final boss as pictured here. Despite the blatant castlevania rip off, 8 Eyes offers enough to stand on its own. The control of your falcon, Cutrus really adds a level of depth to the experience. Apparently in 2 player mode the second player controls Cutrus. That’s pretty cool!

  12. Damn that sounds brutal @bronzeshield! After all the effort you've put in and still looks like it can't be finished under mysterious circumstances. More frustrating that you don't know the exact cause. I've heard that game is brutal but I've never played it.

I managed to sneak in some time and started 8 Eyes today. I am halfway through the game. It seemed difficult at first but once you beat the first level you can tackle the others (so far). Hopefully I can finish this off by tomorrow.

Damn, that list is getting tougher and tougher. Trying to figure out what to play next. Problem is I don't have many carts left on the list. A couple that I do have (top gun 2 and airwolf) I have already tried and failed miserably. Ive got a power pack coming in the mail from gloves, but it will be a little while before it gets here. I'll see if I can find something for in the meantime.

Shocked how long its been since @nerdynebraskan has checked in. Anyone seen him in other threads?

Good call on the power pack. I've always kind of wanted one but there's so few NES games I don't own. Since the Nintendo Age collection tool is gone I don't actually remember but think I am missing 30 licensed carts or so (and 60ish boxes/manuals). I know I don't have Zombie Nation or Krazy Kreatures which are both featured games in the contests this year.

Didn't know nerdy posted anywhere else on the site other than here! But I'm pretty sure I miss out on a lot of posts on the site. I don't know why I feel like that didn't happen as much at Nintendo Age. I never really used the latest posts/topics feature which seemed very popular. I guess I just got better at scouring that site over a decade.

Unfortunately I didn't get to 8 Eyes today but I will tomorrow. Hopefully it won't take me too long? Looking at the remaining list I will consider Athena (how bad can it be?), Mutant Virus (I know it will be baaad) and Q Bert.
