I said before the chess engine in the original Chessmaster program is rated at human expert level, roughly Elo 2000. Good enough to beat most casuals most of the time, but a master player would hand it its ass.

Looking into it further, it was a lot tougher to accurately rate computer programs on the Elo scale back then. On the low end, it's probably got the skill of a good club player. Hardly a "chess master", though.

 

edit: For comparison, Battle Chess's Elo rating is a paltry 1500.
