Rules: - Games must be started and finished no earlier than January 1, 2024, EST. - No cheat codes, game genie codes, glitches etc. may be used - Emulation is allowed, but no save states, altered roms, or any advantages over playing on original hardware. (Super Game Boy and Game Boy Player are allowed.) - Game saves and passwords can only be used if they are obtained from a fresh new game, started this year. - Photos are not required, but they're fun. Scoring: I've simplified the scoring just a little, still generally based on previous clears, with a bump for games that have never been beaten here. Requirements: - 100% completion is not required, thus the default or “normal” difficulty is typically fine. - Definite ending or credits screens are king. If a game has a “bad” ending and a “good” ending, the “good ending” is typically required. - If a game loops indefinitely, only one loop is required. - Specific requirements are given for each game, though they're always a work in progress. I tried to anchor the requirements for trickier "unending" games to actual in-game metrics, such as high score tables, obvious loops, etc. So if some requirements seem too easy/hard, it’s because I didn’t find a better anchor. - Games with indisputable endings might only say “Complete,” but I’d like to eventually include how many levels/stages/rounds are in the game, as that can be useful for first-timers. (e.g., Complete All 8 Stages) - If anything looks off, or if you want to challenge/discuss these metrics, please do so. Games not in the list: - Wisdom Tree unofficial releases - Pokemon Yellow: due to the presence of a GBC header in the ROM of Pokemon Yellow, it is included in the GBC completion thread. - 5 Infogenius titles: These are too much fun and would spoil the rest of the list. - Mortal Kombat 1&2 (single cart) : Games tracked individually, since each has its own cart - Asteroids/Missile Command: Games tracked individually, since each has its own cart - Centipede (Accolade) and Centipede (Majesco) are consolidated into one entry, since gameplay is identical across both titles. Centipede/Millipede and Race Days each include entire games that exist on their own cart. Completion requirements focus only on the modes that aren’t already represented on those other carts. Japanese games? Sure! Beat any Japanese game you like. They're not listed out, but any game you beat will get added to the very bottom of the chart, and they'll be worth 3 points each. It seems that you have to top the course leader board in order for the caddy to say something other than "Nice Game. Please Play Again." I say this because the NintendoComplete longplay gets under par but doesn't get 1st and the congrats message doesn't pop for them. If 1st is needed as I assume, then for Japan, that means a score of 66 or lower (possibly need 65 as I don't know if a tie of 66 will count), and for USA - the harder course - 60 or lower (possibly 59). There is almost no way I'm going to be able to do this without resetting every bad shot but I'll put a couple more days of tries into the Japan course. After my first day, my best round was +12. If I'm save scumming my way to victory (which I plan to do next Monday if I don't get it naturally beforehand), I'll simply cheese both courses to see if there is anything extra for landing 1st place on both. Last night, I was doing okay and was even par up to hole 12 but then it all kept falling apart. So naturally getting under par may not be out of the realm of possibility. But I think resetting the game on every bad shot (the game saves after every completed shot when the ball settles) is probably the only way to actually "beat" the game. Since the save system is mentioned in the manual, it doesn't really feel like cheating either (to me at least). I'll still try a couple more days to see how much I can improve, but there's no way I can do the US course "legit." But I started the game and completed it all during January. I even completed all of the secret levels just for fun. I'm currently in the middle of a Donkey Kong playthrough. I forgot this game has just over 100 levels, so it might take me a week or two, but I really enjoy this game. Some lower matches were harder than the championship match. Other times I could just continually get my opponents into a corner and continuously pummel them with a suplex and dropkick combo. There's a circle icon in the game that I think activates a special move, but I didn't use it. Pretty meh game. In other progress news, I am on Chapter 2 Story 3 for Wario Land 2. I really like the game. I looked up a guide for getting all treasures and I have been getting all the little pieces that you get from the bonus games at the end of every stage. I also learned that there are hidden levels once you beat the main game which is pretty cool. For Vegas Stakes I have $30,000, thanks to the lottery ticket event being a winner multiple times in a row, as well as playing the roulette. There are 3 casinos in the game, with the last one being unlocked only when you have $100,000. I played against Ollie, he kinda sucked at playing lol. Wario Land 2 is good, but it's hard for me to go back to it after beating the excellent Wario Land 4 last year. I like the music and the graphics. It's weird not seeing any colour as I'm used to the GBC version. I couldn't tell any differences between the 2 versions as far as I could tell. I only beat the "main" part of the game. As I mentioned in a previous post, there are hidden levels that open up after the game. There are 25 more treasures and 25 more panel pieces to find along with multiple additional endings, making for quite a high replay value. With that game out of the way, I will hopefully get some time this weekend to work on Link's Awakening. Vegas Stakes is looking like more of a long term project with how slow I'm playing. If it continues to be slow, I may give up on it temporarily and come back later.
