Game Debate #93: Counter-Strike

At the time of its release and initial explosion of popularity, I wasn't playing a lot of FPS games but when I did, I generally still preferred the Build Engine games (Duke/Blood/Shadow Warrior) for single player and Unreal Tournament for multi-player. Even at the time, the Half-Life Engine felt like it had a bit of jank to me, which kept me from fully appreciating it. I tried playing Counter-Strike a few times at LAN parties but, between getting absolutely curb-stomped by more experienced players and not having regular access to that kind of network environment, the game just never left a lasting impression on me. To this day, I could probably count the number of CS matches I've ever played on one hand.

I have wonderful memories of playing this in college over LAN.  I got pretty good.  I really liked the Day of Defeat mod.

8/10. It's a great shooter. I just never liked waiting out rounds when you died, so I always preferred games like Unreal Tournament. I get why the one life thing makes the game more tactical for playing as a team, but playing with randos, meh.
