Nice job!  I was planning to do this one again... eventually.  If I felt more competitive at "Beat The NES" I would probably take a note like: never beat Castelian for the points.  Always let someone else destroy their overall resolve by going after it instead.  Pretty much everything you've said about it is dead on but for some reason I'm still convinced that I really like this game..  I even have it CIB for Atari 7800...

I think the frustrating aspect of it, is that theres a guise that its a really easy game.  I did like it when I was playing it at first, but they just require too much from the player.  It would have been a lot better if it was more puzzle based, than platform based at the end.  Thats really where my frustration came from, the 'reactionary' stuff, like jumping, or shooting.

EDIT: I hate Goonies II but I'm gonna use a guide.  What I hate about it is its obtuseness but its another I don't remember being really hard, just confusing.

  2. Just beat Castelian... if you want my NSFW review here it is:

    Spoiler

FUUUUUUUUCCCCCKKKKKKKKKK YYYYYOOOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUUUU!  This game pissed me off to no end.  Its so easy but its so bogged down from such shitty controls, weird hitboxes and unfair randomness.  The game really isn't that bad (I used a video playthru) but the last level is just so incredibly unfair for what they ask of you, and you have to learn to jump at the VERY edge of the platform and sometimes the game eats your input and you fall to the ground.  At the end you have to perform these jumps MULTIPLE times.  God daamn... its only 8 levels and not super long but this is a game you have to be one with the controls.  UGGGGGH I NEED A BREAK.  I actually threw my controller against the floor and turned it off in frustration when I reached almost the end and time ran out, I was probably 30 seconds away from finishing it earlier today.

  3. Just finished Stanley.  I was having a lot of trouble at the end because I kept going in the final temples tube and not being shot out.  Then I realized I forgot the Iron Breastplate and as soon as I touched the bottom of that tube it shot me out.  Fun game!  Recommend it.

OH!  I forgot to mention the silly ending haha.  Just in case you wanna play it heres a spoiler:

    Spoiler

You spend the whole game looking for Dr. Livingston, when you find him and ask if he wants to leave, he says no and you fly back home, making the whole adventure pointless haha.

  4. I grabbed a few games to test and wow, I forgot I really liked Stanley: The search for Dr. Livingston.  I wanted to just play a little and it sucked me in.  I beat it a while ago but remembered very little.  I didn't remember it being very hard but it's slightly challenging, has passwords, very generous with continuing and has light metroidvania elements.  I'm digging it!  Ill prob beat it by tomorrow (it is a bit long) but I strongly suggest people give this one a shot.

  5. Just beat The Guardian Legend.  Really a fun game but I forgot how long it was.  After finally beating the Area 3 boss, things went pretty smoothly till Area 9.  9 and 10 were both pretty tough but nothing too bad because you end up having so much stuff you can just spam it as much as you want.  Forgot this had a boss rush at the end too.  Final boss was pretty easy too, only took 2 tries, and the first try was just figuring out what he does.  Def a good one, esp if you take it in parts with a password.

  6. Before you beat it, I watched a speed run of it cuz I remembered a majority of the game just being a fetch quest.  Then I saw the Doom battle, and I remembered when I beat it the first time years ago on an emulator, I save scummed to beat Doom by trying to punch him and getting him stuck in the wall.  So good on you!  I don't think the game is as good as you might say, altho the music is fine, the graphics are kinda eh, but as a game geared for kids, it reminds me of the first TMNT where they just missed the plot entirely for its audience.

It looks like you beat Karnov before for the 2015 thread. That's notable, because it means that there's now only one game remaining that has been beaten by a different person in every year of this competition - Bubble Bobble. There were two entering 2024, and Karnov was the other one:

      Karnov Bubble Bobble
    2012 Crabmaster2000 Nightowljrm
    2013 gutsman004 WashYourFace
    2014 fusoyaff2 Logo1285
    2015 guitarzombie Bea Iank
    2016 SasoriVader Bearcat-Doug
    2017 Bea Iank Laketown04
    2018 Jandrem MrPeaPod
    2019 Gloves nerdynebraskan
    2020 Kid Dracula Kid Dracula
    2021 Elkovsky CasualCart
    2022 PII Crabmaster2000
    2023 mbd39 Khromak
    2024 guitarzombie ???

If anyone has previously beaten Bubble Bobble and wants to do it again, I don't mind. I just find it interesting. Besides, there are still another 21 games which have gone unbeaten in some years, but have also never been beaten twice by someone.

    Haha oops!

Who Framed Roger Rabbit? is done.

I did stumble upon a tip that could make Doom a *little* bit easier. I was on GameFAQs trying to see if there was a map of the tunnels in the outskirts north of Hollywood. (I've only memorized the locations of the three tunnels closest to the street entrance, and the Will fragment wasn't there tonight. While I didn't get much help with that, I did see that someone posted on the forum there that bombs and exploding cigars (the only weapons that will hurt Doom besides your fists) seem to have greater effect if you start with your fists and get his health bar past the "T" in "STRENGTH" when you charge your punches. Then if you switch to the explosives, they seem to do a bit more damage than if you start the battle with them. You're still mostly stuck fist-fighting the guy for entirely too long.

Of course, I knocked him off the catwalk on the first try with the explosives helping me out. But I let him land too close to the middle. When I got the dip cannon, he still killed me. I had to fight him again with just my fists, but when I knocked him off the catwalk the second time, he was further left and I had more space to melt him with dip.

I was gonna try this again, but I totally forgot how tough it is to punch Doom.

When I beat Karnov last year I figured out that you can really exploit the fact that you retain your items after game over.  Makes it very easy to farm.

My issue was just going in not maxed up on the level 4 and 5 bosses.  The level 4 boss I went in with just the regular shot, which was really tough.  But then when I went to level 5, I used my ladder for the level 4 boss and level 5 doesn't have a ladder so I couldn't get it back.  So now I couldn't power up or get back my health.  Then I soft locked myself and that was it.  Once i restarted, I moved thru all the levels quickly, then got hit at some random enemy at level 5, and it messed me up, so I had to fight the dinosaur not fully powered.  Then I figured out I could use the ladder and even with level 2 shot, the downward shot will hit the dino, and he can't really hit me.  Really those bosses are much easier when you have the shield.  Otherwise most of the game is somewhat of a pushover.

  10. I finished Karnov too.  Thank god it had infinite continues.  I didn't remember if it did or didnt, but my recollection was it wasn't a super hard game.  In fact some of the bosses are much harder than the final boss.  Another one of those games where if you know what you're doing and know where to use your powerups, its pretty easy.  Of course I was learning it and had to refight bosses over and over again in a weakened state, but I could tell what you make the game easy.  For example, knowing when to use your shield power ups for the boss, and which ones you can cheese.  Also knowing where the powerups are really help too.  Not a terrible game, really.

  11. Finished Super Pitfall haha.  I remembered the speedrun being stupidly short so I followed it and beat it!  Its not as bad (as a speed run) as you'd think.  Its got this really funny thing where after you save the girl, you can lose all your lives, game over, then the game plays the demo and because you're in the spot you should be when you beat the game, it plays the ending.

  12. What are the other biggies left?  I know Ikari Warriors is one of them.  If that goes, I'll def do Mutant Virus.  I'll probably also do Ultimate Air Combat as it wasn't super hard (until the very end) but its LONG.  At least there are passwords.  I've been thinking about doing Dynatron City next.  I've beaten it before but remember hardly anything about it.

Dragon Warrior 3 will be done tomorrow...and I answered my own question, turns out I'm an idiot. You can't change jobs INTO Goof-off, you can only start as a Goof-off. So it's impossible to have a Goof-off transform into another class, unfortunately.

I'm geared to the max and probably leveled enough to finish off the final boss, but I'm going to grind a LITTLE bit more before making the dive to take him out. @Gaia Gensouki @guitarzombie and @nerdynebraskan are absolute monsters now, we're tearing it up!

Edit: In DW3. Also in the contest, but in this context I meant their avatars in DW3 lol

Ah thanks :).  Although my list is running low!  I always prefer having a high point to completed ratio, than just # of completes.  The few I have left are ones I've beaten but don't really remember, so I'm not in a rush to relearn some of them.  None of them feel very attractive to even start right now.  Also the way it looks, looks like I'll have to beat Mutant Virus AGAIN, eh? 😞

Ok, time to start Blaster Master again.  Ill be back in almost 3 hrs, unless it glitches again, then I'm abandoning it.

Finished Blaster Master.  Looks like it was about ~2 hrs as predicted.  It took a little longer because I played it safe at the end.  I lost all my Hover and Homing Missiles so I farmed for them, which made the one room with the tiny jumps, spikes and small enemies MUCH easier.  I also tried to employ a new technique of holding down the A button, which locks Jason in place and used "Gun" to keep firing forward.  Worked well but its uncomfortable.  At least I was greeted with one of the best pieces of end screen music on the NES.

If it's 8 or so hours before your bedtime, that's barely enough time to squeeze in a run of Blaster Master. Today's the day!

Hah, I know but i'm still bitter that when I played it last week, it soft locked me half way thru the game.

I'm pretty sure only one loop is required. That's all I did last year.

Oh ok, i'll give it a shot.  I'm pretty sure I beat it but I can't quite remember.
