But I like my Xbox Series X..

It is great for backwards compatibility.  I am playing many 360 enhanced at 4k with AutoHDR.  Looks amazing.

Sure it doesn't have all the exclusives Playstation has but I think most of those are overrated.

I always really appreciated the backwards compatability on Xbox One. It's funny, I sold my Xbox One a couple years ago when the game room was taken over by the baby. But, lately I've been thinking I sort of miss it and maybe I should see if I can find one to replace the broken BR player in the living room. Which would be an excuse to have another Xbox One.

At the moment, I don't see a reason to spring for the new Series X. But I will say that even with the lack of exclusives that PS has, Xbox is really the only non-Nintendo consoles that appeal to me now. Wonder how cheap I can find an Xbox One for now that X/S is out?

1993 - Great game, uses the first person perspective actively to its advantage rather than just being a default "because that's how the genre is". Very well done level design on most stages, that really think about how monsters spawn in relation to your positioning, requiring you to use the layout to your advantage.

2016 - Really good game, focused on action combat, and for the first time ever actually cool boss fights in an FPS. Overall though I think the game ended up feeling repetitive partially due to mostly identical locales, but also because combat doesn't rely much on the arena itself but more on just constantly moving, which means every fight in the game requires sort of the same approach. You don't fight enemies to progress, but stop in arenas and clean them out, and move on.
I also think it's weird how the game starts out mocking story exposition that breaks the flow of the game, but then later on it proceeds to do the exact same thing itself.

    This. Exactly.

Load up that Everdrive if you want to play a game using the NES system/controller.

as several folks have said in this thread, though. The Everdrive/etc doesn't appeal to all. I know that we're probably talking in circles at this point. So I hate to repeat things again, but, sure I prefer actual legit games. And I've taken to buying imports of NES/SNES games and patching them into English on my Retron5 personally, which feels "legit" to me (as I'm not really concerned with COLLECTING).

On the flip, I recently bought a super cheap bootleg of Magical Chase on GBC. The cart is BRIGHT YELLOW and there's zero chance that if it was in the wild it would fool anyone into thinking "oh, this is real, I better drop $400 on it." To me, that's a win-win. I "own" a Magical Chase GBC cart in some capacity; it makes me happy to have it added to my library of games; and it's very super obviously a bootleg and not a phony trying to trick anyone.

Have you played Master of Monsters (Genesis), Brigandine (PS1), Dark Wizard (Sega CD) and Nectaris (PS1)?

Battle Worlds Kronos (Switch)  is extremely deep and very engaging.  One of the few console strategy games where the AI is not dumber than a box of rocks.

I haven't played any of those you mentioned. Though, all my current consoles are Nintendo only. I know that at least Nectaris is on Virtual Console, though.

Thanks for the heads up on Kronos. I've eyed it a few times, but never heard much about its quality one way or the other.

  5. lotta Evercade love in here lately, haha. I'll admit, it's a cool looking system. And I like that there's a console and handheld version now. I just can't seem to make myself want it. I just keep thinking that these same game collections could get ported to Switch, and I'd be much happier with them there.

Also I have a couple more rows that were cut off.  And I sold off stuff that went crazy with COVID.  Like Sleepaway Camp 2 and 3.

I was just looking on ebay this past weekend, apparently the "red cross" version of the box set goes for a pretty penny, and we have one sitting in a closet right now. (We're strongly considering selling  off our entire DVD collection, given we haven't really watched a DVD in like 3 years...)

  7. There may be a song or two, or an album that you dig, but you'd rather listen to other stuff.

^that sums it up for me. I mean, "Running With The Devil" is amazing. And certainly, if hard-pressed, I could cull their entire discography down to like a dozen-song playlist that I'd be happy enough to listen to. If I had to. But as I mentioned in the Nirvana thread, Nirvana/grunge/late 80s "college rock"/early 90's alternative - that's the stuff that really molded my ears. So to me, VH kind of felt like music that my older cousins listened to or whatever. It wasn't "my" music.

  8. I was tempted to give both a 10. The original was super important to me. It was sort of my experience with the whole concept of what Nintendo would finally perfect with Switch. Which is to say, I used to play that game on my Super Game Boy when I was home, and then bring it w/ me on my GB when I was out and about. I'll be honest, I never did learn Spanish in high school, and I blame that partly on the fact that I used to play Link's Awakening in class.

That said, for me LTTP is a 10. And Link's Awakening is just below that. So, I settled on 9's for both. In reality, the remake is probably a 9.5 (not because of the updated visuals - which I do actually adore, but rather the fact that it utilizes all face buttons, so no more bringing up a menu to switch items constantly). At this point, I technically PREFER the remake, but I still love the original and it holds all the nostalgias for me.

I'd really love it if the two Oracle games got the same remake treatment in the same engine. As much as I LIKE those games, when I go back to them now the item switching thing feels like a real chore. Also, they're just not as good as Link's Awakening. But I'd still replay them if remade like this.

That's badass. Congrats. The various colors were truly a thing of their time. Who needs iMacs when you can collect N64's?
