I've seen a lot of comments like this. Anecdotally, I got my 3DS within a year of launch, and have never had a hardware issue of any sort. And I've put thousands of hours into the thing. Like, many, many games that are 50-90 hour completions.
But very few demanding action games. I ain't white knuckling the thing.
As you know, I'm not into RPG's or anything slow paced, I almost exclusively play the twitchy stuff!
Also, my original launch style 3DS hasn't worn out, but each of my later 3DS XL and NEW 3DS XL have had certain issues or another crop up over time, so I have bought a second NEW 3DS XL already.

I can't find my Super Mario Maker edition 2DS been missing for a while.
Is 2DS fully as backwards compatible as a 3DS is? Should I get a NES or Zelda edition 3DS? Ack!
Yeah, the 2DS is compatible with all DS games. However, there is a distinction between the 2DS and the NEW 2DS. The former won't work with the limited handful of NEW 3DS exclusive games.
And, dude, have some class. Zelda edition all the way!

Someone tell me something interesting they found. You can only search for individual games right?
Steel Battalion Big Box: 2
You had access to the full libraries of every console ever made, and THIS was in your top picks to search for?
You are a special breed, Tyler!

I agree with a lot of the points here, the fact is the 3DS has a banging library (especially with the DS backwards compatibility), doesn't emulate well, and it has arguably the most attractive form-factor of any handheld. It's way more compact than modern handhelds like the Switch, and with the clamshell design you don't even need a case for them, just shove it in your pocket!
Another thing that hasn't been mentioned yet, however, is the fact that they wear out over time. If you use your 3DS a lot, the circle pads get worn, the shoulder buttons go fucky, and many of the 3DS colors have paint which chips off over time. I'd imagine a lot of hardcore 3DS fans aware of these issues will have at least one or two spares ready for when they want to swap out their main unit, so there will basically always be demand for fresh systems even from people who already have one.

Let me take this moment to promote The Backlog Challenge™
"See all those games you're supposed to play, but never do because you're too busy, I dunno, watching YouTube videos of cats or something? Well take the reins today, and... like, do it and shit. Those lists aren't going to cross themselves off!"

My backlog is playing Banjo Kazooie again!

I love PlayStation and some of my favorite games are PlayStation exclusive games. But, to each their own.
I think I've only played a decent amount from that earlier list because my gaming has been a pretty broad mix of PC, retro, and modern. For many years, all I really had was PC so I was pretty heavy into PC gaming. That definitely feels like a segment that isn't as well covered across VGS, just generally speaking. I know we have a few PC gamers here but it seems like most people here are into consoles.
My distaste for the Playstation is a personal preference thing, based on feelings rather than rationale.
I can fully accept there are great games and experiences on the system that I would enjoy, but never will, and I'm okay with that.
Actually, it's helpful to have such a large swathe of gaming taken off the table, as it helps me focus my collecting and playing on the systems I prefer.
But, I would never judge someone else for their preferences, just as I don't really mind what people think of mine!

No. Most 360 games are on PS3.

@Splain ALERT!
Continuing with the theme of DMA games, I decided to go back and replay one of the all-time N64 greats, Space Station Silicon Valley!
Such a fantastic, fun, funny and inventive game! Absolutely deserves to belong in EVERY N64 gamer's collection, without doubt!

Wouldn't you rather be a human in the Wall-E world? Seems more appealing. I mean, we're already neck deep in mass consumerism right now.
Nah, I think you're missing the wood for the trees with this one. Where's the GOO?! Plus, I wanna be fed like a baby bird by one of these guys:
The WALL-E robots are too cute, they don't do it for me!

I just wanna live in goo, getting fed/jerked off by a robot. Is that a crime?!

Do keep in mind that there's no N64 in your goopod.
I'm PRETTY sure they've got a metal tube for that too dude... I think one of the ones that attaches in one of your upper-vertebrae!

Everyone's always talking about the Matrix, red pill, blue pill, stay or go...
Red pill is an obvious non-starter for me. I hate multi-cultural rave orgies, and no way I'm subsisting on a diet of dank mushrooms and recycled urine. The eventual, inevitable tearing and biting death by metal mandibles doesn't appeal much either, frankly.
Blue SEEMS like the better choice upfront, but I'd still have to go to virtual work, pay virtual taxes, and listen to virtual nagging from my virtual significant other. Sigh.
So, my idea is the way forward IMO... Purple pill! Take the purple pill, leave the matrix but STAY in the pink goo pod!
Imagine the advantages! It's basically a life-long, all expenses paid goo holiday! All day, all you gotta do is wallow in a warm, nutrient rich gloop, having all your earthly needs serviced by an entire city of menacing, but ultimately servile robot overlords! No more early starts, no more scraping by to survive, no more wiping after you go number two! The benefits are endless, frankly.
Sure, some might chaff at the loss of personal autonomy, or the potential for boredom, but I'm not so sure... I never used my autonomy for much of anything anyway, and I'd imagine a bunch of those crazy tubes would come in handy for ALL sorts of entertainment options, if you catch my drift... You'd DEFINITELY be able to tune into HBO on ONE of those things, at least!
I, for one, WELCOME the pink goo pod! Who's with me?!

Thanks for the concern! Luckily we're all safe here at Casa del Opty!
A few bits and pieces did fall off some shelves in the game room, but nothing damaged, and besides I can't really complain about any of that anyway when it's been so much worse for others!
Good thing Taiwanese are so productive and industrious, we'll have things fixed up proper in no time!

@Splain ALERT!!!
It's finally done! I've finally defeated Body Harvest, a game I first got for Xmas at the age of 12 and has haunted me ever since!
There is so much to this game, it truly is one of the most underappreciated games on the system IMO.
There is undoubtedly a great game to be experienced here, although diminished somewhat by a few significant flaws. I'd say it's as close to greatness as you can get without quite getting over that line.
The main problems with the game IMO are the punishing difficulty (especially when factoring in the absurdly long stretches between save points), and also the relatively mundane quest elements that often consist of simply locating an item and bringing it somewhere else.
The thing is tho, there are also fantastic and truly impressive elements to the game as well. The combat is really fun, with well designed enemies and great weapons. Controlling the various vehicles is awesome fun, a true highlight, and the massive open worlds are incredible for an N64 game.
There is also TONS of content here, tens of different vehicles, 5 HUGE levels which would each be enough for a whole game in themselves in many respects, and there IS a decent variety of objectives and things to do as you play through the various stages.
The game also has a great atmosphere, augmented by an impressive and immersive soundtrack. This game has a truly epic, almost overwhelming and intimidating scope to it.
It's not for the feint hearted, and it's not for the easily frustrated or impatient. It is also a game I would DEFINITELY advice to have a guide handy, because you ARE gonna get stuck an hour into a play session, with more than an hour before the next save point, with enemies all around and a dwindling health bar crying out for whatever mercy you can get!
But, for a true deep-cut N64 experience, if you can say you bested Body Harvest on Hero mode, if you have GONE there and lived to tell the tale, you deserve a truly rarified kudos. I recommend this game to those N64 hardcore, unreservedly.
To everyone else give it a look, you'll probably find a ton to enjoy, but don't feel bad about giving up once the grind hits you halfway into the second level when you just lost an hour's worth of progress because you accidentally fell in a ravine and drowned!

How’s your lawsuit going Opty? Can you give me the name of your big shot lawyer so I can sue PSA because nobody wants to pay $1,000 for my Kenny Powers rookie card anymore? Thanks bro!
I don't need to sue anybody, because I didn't burn all my money in a giant hype pit like a ton of other people did.
The only rookies I know of are all the comic book and baseball card collectors who stumbled blindly into graded game collecting as though it was a thing.

Lol, did it really take you two weeks to clap back with that?
You are correct that the WATA fraudsters got incredibly lucky in the timing of their little scam here, as it did coincide with a remarkable and anomalous boom in collectable markets.
But, that doesn't change their ill-intent and their deceptive actions, which are all now a matter of public record. They were gunning for that boom before the pandemic was so much as a twinkle in a Chinese bat's eye.
If there was no WATA, that covid boom money wouldn't have gone into graded games, it would have just gone into regular game collecting (which it did AS WELL) or other collectable categories (which again, it did as well).
The pandemic boom in collectables is not a part of the accusations against WATA, and to conflate them is a product of either ignorance, willful ignorance, or an intention to distract or mislead.

I'm currently working on a playthrough of Body Harvest on Hero mode. It's been a 25 year journey for me with this game, I first got it for Xmas when I was 12 years old, and it's been kicking the shit out of me ever since!
I've tried and failed to beat this game several times over the years, but I THINK I'm finally man enough to do it! I've just beaten the first Alien Processor in the America level, which is further than I've ever gotten before...
I think I got this one guys, wish me luck!

I'm a contrarian reverse purity test pioneer. I look at what @OptOut collects and then do the complete opposite, but also make sure to do it faster and better, all while waging a campaign of harassment against him to ensure he knows I'm better at collecting than him, and that he'd best stay out of my lane if he knows what's good for him.
It's working out pretty well.
I know you are, but what am I? Goddim.

What is going on with 3DS hardware right now?

I would only use it a little bit tbh. Most games didn't really make good use of it, so I didn't bother at all for a lot of them.
Even for the especially good looking 3D games, like Zelda, Luigi's Mansion, 3D land etc. I'd maybe turn the 3D on every now and then, but I'd quickly turn it off after appreciating it for a little bit.
The main problem for me with it is ghosting, finding the best viewing angle, and that the 3D effect sort of seems to diminish over time as you get used to looking at it. I would feel quite fatigued by looking at it if I ever tried to keep it on constantly.
But, glad some people really could enjoy it properly tho!
