  1. I watched I Confess today. Man, Hitch sure knew how to make ‘em. They don’t make movies like this anymore. I haven’t watched this movie in probably 10 years. It’s a great hypothetical…man commits murder and tells a priest in Confession and the priest cannot say anything.

  2. I watched The Night House yesterday on HBO Max. I don’t know how this movie got such good reviews. It’s a horror movie that tries to subvert expectations. However, I saw part of the twist coming early. I find one of the big reveals to be handled with lack of respect for what happened. I also found some significant plot points to be completely undeveloped. Like Malignant, I was disappointed in this movie, but at least Malignant was aware enough to not take itself too seriously.

There Will Be Blood is a masterpiece.

It's based upon Sinclair's novel "Oil!" which I highly recommend reading 🙂

I hated, and I can’t emphasize enough how much I hated There Will Be Blood. It was well done, but I despise entertainment where I find that the main characters lack redeeming qualities. Yes, that happens in life, but I don’t like to spend my time with fiction like that.

I watched Death on the Nile this weekend. The movie was bad. The supporting cast was underused, Gal Gadot and Armie Hammer were terribly cast, and the CGI was horrible.

  4. The director’s cut for Rocky IV was on sale for $5 on iTunes. I watched it and I have to go back and watch the theatrical cut, but I think they added a decent bit of monologue which I do not like. I’ll stick with the original cut. Hopefully Amazon has mercy on us and either gives us a physical 4K set or licenses it to a boutique firm like Kino.

I really liked The Last Duel, but I do need to watch it again. The acting that was required to show the different perspectives of each event were top of the line. The fighting is probably the best fighting I've seen with people in armor. And the writing had several subtle nuggets of gold  and the story had a nice flow imo.

I enjoyed it, although the third perspective felt like it was rushed compared to the previous two perspectives. I also thought the wife was the most interesting character, so it was disappointing she got less time from her perspective. Also, I cannot stand Ben Affleck in most roles. This was vintage awful Affleck to me. I wish he’d just direct. He’s so much better at that.

  6. I watched Nightmare Alley. I liked it, but it definitely had some pacing issues. I found the ending to be predictable. I haven’t seen the original, but I think I like what I read of the plot better than this.

I watched Doctor Sleep the other day. It was okay, but I definitely like the book better. Then again, they were trying to work with the book and The Shining film. As much as I like the original film, I do think the ending missed out on King’s intended message.

I also watched The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It. I feel like these films just keep getting worse and worse. I think the Annabelle Creation spin off was the last good one.

My Castlevania Collection showed up today, the classic box which had the wonky nes dust jacket thing, box, slip cover, poster etc.  All things said, not impressed with the packing, it's very stuffed in there, overly stuffed to where it does harm to the box.  BUT...I went in on it for the audio CD and I'm very impressed with the over 20 tracks it has.  I don't get why they refused to tell people what tracks they were when it was assembled, but whatever, gamble paid off.  I've already MP3d the stuff and uploaded them to my phone. 😄

My box was crunched just like my Curse of the Moon 2 classic box. The two times I ordered something more than the standard box and they both got crunched. Thankfully, I have gotten free replacements for both. However, it makes me even more hesitant to order these cardboard box editions.

  8. I watched the remake of West Side Story. Outside of Maria, I found it to be  inferior to the original even though that is not my favorite musical.

I watched The Last Duel. It was good, but definitely not Ridley Scott’s best. I also watched Mary Queen of Scots and probably preferred that movie to this one.

I finally watched Vertigo and Anatomy of Murder. Jimmy Stewart is amazing. He might be my favorite actor. I can’t wait for The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence to come out on 4K. I loved both these movies, but I couldn’t help but laugh at the ending of Vertigo. I also rewatched Psycho. Hitchcock was brilliant.

I watched KIMI. I’m not that big of a Soderbergh fan. He’s more style over substance to me. Zoe Kravitz was great and I appreciate the COVID references. However, the second half of the movie was poorly executed to me.

I also watched BlacKkKlansman. I usually can’t appreciate Spike Lee films, but so really enjoyed this. Between this and WSS, I found myself rethinking race relations in the U.S. I’m been more just uncomfortable by some of these far-right people, but now I’d disgusted by them.

Lastly, I watched 1931 Dracula. The acting and cinematography were pretty primitive, but it kept me engaged throughout the whole movie.

    Next up is Nightmare Alley.

  9. Yeah, I’ve been spending more time on blu-ray.com lately. Even there it was kind of a quiet topic. This man brought me a lot of joy in watching his films, even things like Draft Day that were mocked. He’ll be sorely missed by me. His son’s stuff is hit or miss for me. I really liked his son, Jason, in his early stuff. The more recent stuff, including Ghostbusters Afterlife, not so much.
