  2. I did not watch, but I am also not able to vote for any of the choices.

Retro is a style. A style that calls back to the past. It does not have to be confined to a specific medium or hardware constraint.

Mega Man is a vintage, 8-bit platforming game. Shovel Knight is a retro, 8-bit style platforming game.

I’m curious if there is such debate about terminology in other hobbies. This topic comes up surprisingly often in game collecting.

Half the reason for me to collect is for the high I get when finding a crazy deal out in the wild. The high fades quickly but the memory remains forever. When I look at my collection I remember the story behind almost every piece I own and it makes me feel proud. Maybe I found a rare piece in a flea market, or maybe I got a broken game someone was going to trash and I brought it back to life, or maybe I traded and got a good deal, etc. These make for great conversations to share with other collectors.

Yes! This and getting to share my collection with friends and family is why I love the hobby.

  4. I generally like to play games on the system I originally played them on. Port or no port.

For Final Fight, I originally played the arcade, but played the SNES port a lot as well.

I own a copy of the SNES version largely for the nostalgia, but also Capcom Classics for PS2, because it retains the co-op mode from the arcade that the SNES version lost.

Regarding “retro” games, I can enjoy the heck out of Streets of Rage 4 without it impacting my appreciation of playing the original games on a Genesis.

Put a very long, very deep gash all the way across the front and back of my hand in high school.  I woke up at my friend's house (his dad drug me in from a car) and ate breakfast with his mom and grandma, trying not to puke or bleed on the table.

All these years later it's not super visible

Yeah man. I gashed my palm one time and didn’t realize. Bled on the sheets and ruined them. Woke up thinking “why does my hand hurt?”

The GBA library is massive and contains a ridiculous number of quality titles, so I think it's a reasonable question to ask. In fact, if the GBA was a home console rather than a portable device, it could reasonably be the favorite. But I feel like these arguments are heavily biased towards the consoles and the portable devices are a different category. Until the Switch that is...

My first thought after reading the initial post was that GBA was more akin to what the Switch is today.

GBA is like the little brother to the Super NES. Both from a great family.

  7. My primary curiosity: Is there a way to use the Game Boy Player to without having some kind of disc in the system?

I’ve spent a few days reading up on GameCube mods and have found more questions than answers. Seems like there are a lot of great soft mod options now in 2020.

What have you found to work best? What would you recommend against?

Any tips or suggestions are appreciated!
