  1. SFC beat: Gokujou Parodius

This is the second Parodius game for the system. It adds an option to turn off the "roulette" powerup orbs. They can give you any powerup if your timing is good but good luck doing so while focusing on not dying. If you stop the roulette on the "Oh!" space or any powerup you already have, you lose all your powerups. I find them more of annoyance than help so it's nice to be able to turn them off. It also adds an option to respawn right where you die, with a few bells appearing, instead of getting sent back to a checkpoint. These options make the game a more pleasant experience imo. I beat on a variety of difficulties with a variety of characters (there are 11!) mostly with lives cranked up to 9, roulette off, and respawn on, but I did get one beat with default settings (2 lives, difficulty 4, roulette on, respawn off). There is a comically difficult 8th difficulty level accessible by inputting the Konami code on the options menu. I got through that by credit feeding and grabbing a green bell for invincibility after dying (and dying again shortly after the invincibility wears off).

  2. Soldiers of Fortune is done. I had to use a guide to find all the secrets to make it through the second half and I had to restart from my world 4 password a few times. I think there's a kernel of a great game in here but the unforgiving difficulty lets it down. It's probably more fun with a second player.

  3. Terrible beat em up. The safe thing to do against many enemies is jump attacks, which is boring. Larger enemies have some weakness you need to exploit, like doing running attacks. Final Fight would hit arcades later the same year and define what a beat em up should be. Everyone with a positive opinion of Golden Axe seems to be someone who played it back in the day and is wearing nostalgia goggles.

  4. Madden 06 is done. I took the Giants to the Super Bowl and beat the Colts on Rookie difficulty. Rookie is extremely easy. I was regularly scoring 100 points a game and shutting out the opponent. I'll play again on the next difficulty.

Here's Tom Coughlin getting Gatorade poured on him.

I'm on a misguided quest to 1cc Snake, Rattle n Roll. Once I got lucky and reached the final boss without a game over and two lives left, but I failed. The best I've done is beat the game only using one continue.

The first 8 levels are fairly easy once you get the hang of them so aren't even worth mentioning. It's all about the last two ice stages and the final boss. Level 9 is a difficult ice stage but entirely doable with practice. But the end of level 10 is so freaking hard, 20x harder than anything else before it. You have to navigate an ascending row of slippery, slanted ice cubes with no wall behind them. You'll usually either be too aggressive and slip off the back of the cubes or not be aggressive enough and slide back down and have to start the climb over again. Fortunately if you slip off the back and die you'll stay on the cube you're on so that it's possible to make progress. It's so hard that it feels like luck when I can pull it off.

The final boss isn't easy either. It's a giant foot that moves around in a circle on the surface of the moon. You have to lick it a bunch of times while also trying to avoid two instant death meteors.  If you stop licking for even a second it regains all of its health. The faster you can mash the better. Thankfully there's no RNG in this part and it's the same patterns all the time but it's still tough.

Has anyone actually no-deathed this game? This is one of those games where I can't imagine not dying at all. Mostly because of stage 10.

EDIT: I guess speed runners have no-deathed  this. Maybe savestate practice helps.

I haven't no-deathed SRnR but I have 1cc'ed it. I wasn't even trying to 1cc, just trying to beat, but it ended up a 1cc. If you've got the early stages mastered, you can do it. You just need to keep trying until you get good runs on the ice levels and boss on the same attempt.

  6. Kirby's Pinball Land is done. I looped the game 3 times and beat my high score from 25 years ago with a score of 6,852,090. After looping the first time I had an amazing run on the soccer bonus stage. I didn't know until now, but if you keep scoring goals and getting the points per goal to 64000, then 99000, each goal after that gives you an extra life. I got 5 or 6 extra lives that way. Nearly every shot went in.

flink is a D? really?  what are your thoughts?

the controls aren't the greatest.  if i remember correctly there is no run button and your jumping distance is based on your running speed, which feels like it takes longer than it should to get up to speed.  i would probably give it B or C.

That's precisely it. I hate the controls. I really didn't like having your running speed based on how long you've been moving, plus taking too long to get to max speed, plus even the max speed being pretty slow.

  8. @acromite53's beat of Fire Shark is missing from the first post. I just beat it myself, 1cc on Easy, not-1cc on Normal. I'll try Hard tomorrow.

    Regarding NBA Jam:

    Quote

Both of these games do have leaderboards, but no season, playoffs, or tournament mode...despite one being named Tournament Edition. Is one game enough, or should the completion requirement be to top the leaderboards?

I don't have either NBA Jam game on Genesis, but I do have Tournament Edition on SNES. It keeps track of which teams you've beaten and iirc something happens when you beat every team. Assuming that's the same on Genesis, that should be the beat criteria imo, not winning a single game. I'm not sure if vanilla NBA Jam has that or just Tournament Edition.
