Well it's meant to be an achievement, if you broke it up like that you'd end up with 5x the amount of series. Considering they didn't require anything but the cart or disc it didn't seem so bad to me but I do collect on most platforms.

Now that I have everdrives I've kind of refined my collecting to modern systems that don't have everdrives, like the Switch and 3DS (although the 3DS does now I think). Switch is a really fun system to collect for. Definitely not going for a full set, but there are a lot of great and interesting games on it. I have most of the titles I want for 3DS/Wii U already.  I've also started focusing on series based collections instead. I'm currently going for a CIB Zelda collection (including all the different variations), as well as Star Wars which is just a massive library.

I have a process (I used the NA site for it.. just in time) where I go line by line for each system and research the games. I remember dreading 3DS when I did this and actually came to the conclusion I was only missing about 30 games I wanted, I somehow amassed the rest over the gen without even really trying. Wii U was also really easy to do, but I have found Switch overwhelmingly difficult to collect on due to the amount of limited releases and small print runs with no idea which will sell out and which will be reprinted. You see a lot of stuff like Bendy or Penguin wars be sought after for a bit, but then they become quite common. I do love the system though and have around maybe 200 retail releases for it, I just hope I can keep up with it over time lol.

Neo Geo, I have the original hardware and a Everdrive of sorts for it. I simply could never afford the commanding prices for its legit software

Honestly I think you should be fine with most PS3 and 360 titles. While PS3 titles required installs that's merely data off the disc, and while patching might be down one day, most PS3 titles worked fine enough out of the gate. It wasn't until PS4/Xbox One where the games are just gutted, unplayable, etc often from the word go

Not being a pro on this stuff, I do assume some day dedicated fans will have methods to preserve various patches and such and create a way for us to access the stuff again too. Where there's a will there's a way.

I figured this could be insightful as long as we can all just respect that everyone collects for their own reasons and has their own goals. I'm curious to see the why behind the various methods we all use to collect what we collect. For myself, I originally (and still hold onto) only collecting US releases due to cost control, and rather than go for full sets on most systems I just go for sets I find interesting. Either because the game was respected, or because I want to own it for some personal reason (typically just because it looks fun or is part of a set). I don't only buy on any one system but actually over 40 platforms as well, so going for full sets for everything would be impractical and also make me feel like I have too much 'junk'. A lot of my setup is driven with the ability to play and play well, with tons of equipment and setup done to be able to use all the portables and consoles in high fidelity despite being original hardware (mostly).

So for example, these are full sets for me, but not full sets for all.

In the end I probably have spent hundreds of hours researching and curating each game I own so that it suits who I am as a person to some degree (even if only vaguely), I get a certain kind of feeling every time I look at a game because even if I haven't got to play it yet, I know what it is. I began collecting around when I met my fiancee because she somehow skipped the generations between 2600 and the N64 (so basically 8 bit and 16 bit) and it motivated me to want to try some stuff I grew up with her. I started this over 10 years ago and originally had a lofty goal of 1000 games. It has since been shattered and grown well beyond my original intent but it all began with a desire to share my hobby with a person I care about, and we still mutually work on it together along with play the stuff together. What about you? Share your preferences, reasoning or stories.

Unless VGS decides to focus on modern gaming it would be irrelevant to Metacritic anyways, but they could assign people as reviewers of course. Lots of sites have dozens. Probably vastly beyond the scope of this site for now anyways.

Yes but it does require some care. Actually the pool table is exactly where it was when we bought the house (it came with it) and we didn't really take up any extra space when working around it. We have shorter sticks and longer sticks depending on what you end up needing so it's still pretty functional. I tried to keep the more expensive things away from that area as well but since it's mostly just my fiancee and I down there, we know not to play like drunken fools. The stuff I put on the bookshelves on the side were purposely DS/3DS/PSP/Vita games because they are basically impossible to damage in that area as well

It was surprisingly annoying to setup. We had a different setup in a similarly large area in our older house but this one was open concept, we had an initial plan but stupidly did not factor that light is a thing. The amount of times we had to reconfigure it to work with actual lighting was pretty mind numbing.

I did this awhile ago and it was tough. What was your worst experience in terms of finding a game? 

Yeah reproductions are rampant and if you opt to actually play the games there is a lot to that. Like you basically gave to get a turbo duo unless you want to track down a tg16, a crappy cd add on and a super system card of sorts. It's not user friendly at all but I do love it. 

It's an awesomely fun system if you like arcade kinds of games but it's also really expensive and complex to deal with. It's likely my most valuable collection despite not being near as large. I'd stay away from the outer boxes unless you have serious cash. 

I'd definitely love a more elegant way to see your collection displayed, as well as slot in games you don't have but are gunning for rather than have it be separate list. Gamevaluenow is nice but has a clunky way of displaying games for someone who has thousands of them. I always imagined just being able to see nothing but their boxarts populate the screen but hover over them for a snapshot of relevant info, then click for the fully monty.

Some months ago I patched up my game area in preparation for a BBQ, so a lot of it wasn't quite where I wanted it and is in the process of being updated here and there. I'm hoping to basically have it how I want it within some months, but I figured I could post the current shots and maybe post the final product later

Decided to jump over here due to what happened with Nintendoage. Really sad to lose the million collection badges I attained over time there but looking forward to seeing how this site grows and hopefully I can partake in it somehow. As for information about me, I have a broad respect for gaming of all types and actively game on everything from the Atari 2600 up to the modern systems. I collect on over 40 platforms between the Nintendo, Sega, Xbox, Playstation and Atari range along with some Neo Geo and Turbografx for a little added spice. I spend a lot of energy in keeping my setup up to date, polished and well rounded in order to ensure I can both enjoy looking at it but of course playing on it optimally. I'm always open to share how I setup my stuff and to help others learn how to fix issues they have as well. Hopefully i'll be able to find a happy niche here
