Can anyone comment on the availability of LRG games that hit higher distribution? For example, Golf Story that was also sold through Best Buy in the US?

    OK hold your horses there.

The version you get direct from LRG is a different cover art and sometimes comes with different extras than what is available at Best Buy, not to mention they always come with a trading card and there's a chance that you get one of the more rare gold foil trading cards. There is also no guarantee that Best Buy will pick up a release or how many copies they will have. The one advantage with the Best Buy releases is they rarely sell out (these games are truly niche) and I usually prefer the cover art Best Buy gets (usually it's the artwork on the card).

SRG also has a similar deal with GameStop, it depends on the game but they published Enter the Gungeon and then GameStop had a retail version with different bonuses.

To me it's the best of both worlds because I just want the option to buy the game sooner or later, not feel pressured to buy them before they sell out because they are artificially limited. But I think everyone here understands variant collecting, and I wanted to point out that these are variants. They are not the same product.

Huh I didn't know FE got that high either and definitely not Hypergrind.  I've let go of a couple FEs over the last few years I've found after giving them a little time, but I've never had the other.  But hey you could be worse off and in need of Cubivore.  Dear god the price of that one sucks and I'm glad I've held onto mine or forget it.

I paid $220 for Cubivore earlier this year.

    No regrets... 🙂

  3. Here’s all my pickups from the past week or so! I also got Downwell in the mail but don’t remember where I put it 😅

    - Fairune, the left-con and the Pokeball were all from trades

    - the N64 games were BOGO from GameStop, $8 altogether!

    - Plants vs Zombies was an eBay find, finally found it with a clean slipcover, that was important

    - Louvre guide popped up on Mercari, didn’t expect to finally get the English version 🎊

  4. I don't have anything too crazy, but [pun intended] the gem of my collection might be my loose North American copy of Jewel Time Deluxe for Nintendo DS. Found it through GameStop, had it shipped to my local store, had to control myself when I went to pick it up. Probably the only time I'll find something like this in the wild! It's really nothing special other than being rare but it's a game about literal gems.

  5. I had the very first DMG that came with Tetris and headphones. Everyone had this. I kept playing it even after the Pocket came out. I didn't upgrade until the Game Boy Color. I figured, the gray monster fits in my cargo pocket, so what do I need a "Pocket" for?

One of my favorite obscure games for the system that I have fond memories of is Ninja Boy 2. This was an RPG but the mob battles were all real time action brawls, only boss fights were turn based and you could use items in either context. Playing this game at 6 years old I never got very far. A few years later I came back to it and discovered how to get off the first planet and managed to play through all the way to the end. The story and settings were just so creative and fun. I still think about one of the locations in the game (a space station inhabited by dinosaurs where it never rains) all the time. Few RPGs have topped this one in terms of style for me.

I wouldn't say tank, but definitely cool off from these anomaly highs we've seen that don't make sense (fucking Golf).

I'd love that. I'm a buyer far more than a seller. Most of what I buy, I never have any plans to sell.

But I think the prices always look too high. I've seen threads from years ago where people said "these prices don't make sense, wait a few years and they will come down," and guess what? They didn't!

So I do hope these "spikes" are just that. Hey, for all we know, we could enter a recession and that could present some excellent buying opportunities. But absent people stumbling on boxes and boxes of sealed retro games, it's not like these things are getting more common. Prices could totally keep going up.

  7. I've been watching listings for these two GameCube games for months (this is what I do for fun I guess) and recently I was quite shook when I saw these auctions end in the same day with Go Go Hypergrind going for more money. I don't know if the winning bidder fat fingered their bid or something. I wasn't too surprised about the Path of Radiance price since it has been coming down for a while now but seeing Go Go Hypergrind go for that much is a bit frustrating since it's one of the higher end games for GameCube that I still don't have.

  8. Just to add: I think it's funny that people threw out numbers like $15k or $25k which is basically what a Stadium Events will go for, and we know those are not "one of a kind."

I also think it's funny someone was talking about "you can't do much with it" on a forum where many people buy and talk about sealed games they never intend to open.

This is the mythical, legendary prototype. Of all the important pieces of gaming history one could own, this is up there with the most important ones. Like an NWC cart, and even those aren't as rare as this.

Also the seller clearly has no urgency to sell. There's no opportunity cost and probably very little chance of this item losing value because more are discovered. If he ends up coming down on his price he will still walk away with a lot.

If I was a billionaire I'd drop 3m on this easy. That's pissing money.

If I had 3m of spending money this would be an easy buy. The owner is clearly waiting for the famous rich person who has to have the one and only, this is why it's in the news so much. Throw out what we consider a crazy number, and that'll get media attention. Now he just has to wait for someone to go "I can afford that, and that sounds hella cool to be the owner of".

That or a rich comic collector, apparently they're loaded.

$3M is a price for a company or museum to pay. There are companies that will buy stuff like this to have in their "vault" aka historical archive. Like Nintendo has certain items from their history preserved and puts some on display. For a museum like National Videogame Museum this would be a good investment. I think it's smart to ask for a high price, better chance it will be preserved and made accessible if it goes to a business entity than if it were to go to a private collector.
