I like Brett Weiss' books. I guess he kinda irked off Pat Contri at one point, but I think he is a good writer.  He's written 2 books that attempt to identify the top 100 console games from 1977-1987 and also from 1988-1998.  I grabbed the game list for both books and will post it behind spoiler tags below.  I've played 125 of the 200 he identifies.  Although, in counting those up, I didn't really pay much attention to the platform he listed.

Here's a list of some of the titles from his lists that I've never played.

    1. Banjo-Kazooie
    2. Bonk's Adventure
    3. Boulder Dash
    4. Castlevanla Ill: Dracula's Curse.
    5. Donkey Kong Country.

Interesting. I've played 137 of those. Also, of the 20 you list, I've played 18 and beaten 8 of them 😄

Oh, neat! I've actually never tried out classic computer games before.

The classical music in Alpiner is definitely cool, but I've gotta admit the voice samples seem the best part.

    [T-Pac]

Absolutely. One of my favorite things about that game is how it basically insults you when you get hit and knocked down the mountain 😆

Very cool. Have you ever played the TI-99/4A computer? There's a game called Alpiner that uses the same classical music:

I wish I paid more attention to game soundtracks, but I'm usually too focused on the gameplay and visuals.

That being said - the "password theme" in The Guardian Legend [NES] is the best thing ever.

    [T-Pac]

With your Blaster Master video, I thought you would have said Blaster Master! It has an amazing soundtrack 🙂

  6. That is a really tough question! A few of my very favorites (I'm sure I left some off):

    • Castlevania
    • Castlevania III
    • Castlevania: Symphony of the Night
    • Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia
    • Mega Man 2
    • Mega Man 3
    • Secret of Mana
    • Streets of Rage 2
    • Revenge of Shinobi
    • Street Fighter II
    • Super Mario 3D World
    • Contra
    • Thunder Force III
    • Jet Grind Radio
    • Space Harrier

There are tons more I could list and tons more I could remember to list, I'm sure. It's hard to really pick one that's the very best. Any of these could be in the running on any given day. I will say, though, that I do have the full soundtracks of a few of them ready for listening outside of game playing: Symphony of the Night, Secret of Mana, and Jet Grind Radio. Same for several Castlevania original/remix albums.

  7. Well, my Duo finally arrived a couple days before the new year. Of course, by that time I was out of town for the holiday. When I did get it set up I had to christen it with Bonk's Adventure, that being my favorite TG-16 game. Everything looks, sounds, and plays great from what I can tell. Beating Bonk on a big screen, nice crisp graphics, using a wireless controller is awesome 🙂

I'm disappointed the save states still aren't available since that is pretty much required to play through some longer games (anyone know when that system update will arrive?). I downloaded the library images and that looks really nice, I love that feature. Every game I've tried so far has worked flawlessly from what I can tell. For a TG-16/PCE fan it's a really nice modern setup!

  8. I do enjoy full-set collecting on occasion, for my very favorite systems. I just completed my U.S. GameCube set in November, a journey that began in October 2001 when I got the system on release with Luigi's Mansion, Rogue Squadron II (still one of my favorite GameCube games), and Super Monkey Ball - I think I chose pretty well among the launch games! It was fun to collect it and to finish it.

However, if I had to do it over again there's no way I would have collected that set. Now the games are insanely expensive. Gone are the days when you could get 20 GameCube games for $30-40 from someone selling them off to fund their Xbox 360 purchase or something. It's kind of discouraging to think that era is over since it was a lot of fun.

At this point I've completed the sets I want to complete, except perhaps one where i need about 40 more games for the set that I may pursue, and also some variants/imports/etc. I'm interested in for GameCube and other systems. I can't imagine collecting for modern systems with all the download-code-in-a-box, digital-only, or useless-without-a-10GB-download games, plus the proliferation of re-releases ("Complete Edition," etc.) and so-called collector's editions.

Hot take--the best NBA Jam is actually NBA Hang Time.  I never felt it was too unfair, but maybe I just played it THAT much.

NBA Hangtime is definitely the best in the Jam series. The arcade is best but the N64 version is very good as well. And yes, the game cheats - when you get up big, the computer will come at you aggressively with unlimited turbo, make every 3-point shot, try to knock you down constantly, etc. Also, if you're up by enough you will rarely make 3-point shots, while missing layups and even dunks much more often. However, if you're quick and precise enough you can still continue to increase your lead (being on fire really helps).

I know it's fairly common knowledge in many fighting games that the AI is programmed with certain..."triggers"...which cause it to suddenly get a lot more difficult (i.e., skip animation frames, read player inputs before they're executed, etc.). There was one specifically egregious time that I wish I had recorded on video, when I was playing either Street Fighter II or Street Fighter II Turbo on SNES. I was Guile facing Balrog on one of the higher difficulties and whooping him pretty good (still at 80-90% health) when I witnessed a moment of pure programming bullshit. I hit Balrog with a flash kick which connected unblocked and reduced him to a little under 10% health. AS I'M STILL IN THE AIR, RECOVERING FROM THE FLASH KICK ANIMATION, Balrog recovers instantly and does a charging uppercut (which I can't block because...well...I'M STILL IN THE PREVIOUS ANIMATION) and air juggles me into two more charging punches which completely depletes my health bar. Round over. I turned the SNES off. I had seen enough.

I've also had my fair share of questionable moments in games like Darkest Dungeon. You know the sort, like when the boss is down to like 1 hit point and an entire round of your attacks miss...then the boss suddenly gets a "very fortunate" string of critical hits that wipe your party. Yeah...suuuuuure.

I don't think I've ever seen that Balrog BS, but it's obvious the computer cheats in Street Fighter II since your computer opponents will sometimes pull off moves no human could physically do. Guile will walk forward and throw a sonic boom or do a flash kick (obviously, you can't walk forward while performing the required inputs for those if you are a human). M. Bison does this quite a bit (similarly, walking forward and doing a psycho crusher, for example) and I assume that was programmed in to make him harder as the final boss. Those things always irritated me since it seems like a lazy way of increasing the difficulty at the expense of being a more realistic opponent.

  11. Not really. I mean, yes, if my family or friends were homeless or starving and I refused to sell some games and help them that way, yes, I would feel guilty, but that's not the case. If I were offered a high amount of money for a game and said no I might later regret it, but that's not the same thing as feeling guilty I guess. Although, honestly, sometimes I wonder if it would be advantageous for mental health reasons to have far fewer possessions 🤪

I'm not sure if I handled the audio levels very well here. Is the gameplay sound overpowering the voiceover too much?

Fantastic! One of my very favorite 2600 games as well, just behind Cosmic Ark (if you haven't tried that one, try it!).
